Second comment, this is one of the most engaging videos you've done and it's always great to have you peel back the curtain and talk about stuff like this, and why things are the way they are, not because of the topic itself but more importantly because you're getting at the fundaments of what good design is and how to think about fashion in a considered way. Keep up the good stuff.

When you talk about reference not copy. What we're getting at there is fashion as design, and understanding the intention and design of something rather than just parroting the aesthetic of an item. Very interesting that this sort of emphasis on creativity and originality was so heavily pushed by an art college, a very strong case that fashion is in fact the most vibrant and living form of art.

Hey, I'm at CSM too, studying on the foundation course. I really enjoyed this video specifically how you explained the difference between referencing and copying. It was also really useful to know what the purpose of the assignments were and what they were learning by creating their collections eg. understanding the people of a given culture.

It all started with the Antwerp 6 and Margiela, which were huge contributors to the early advancement of the anti-fashion/avant garde movement. These guys made it possible for future Belgian designers to compete with main fashion houses based in the big cities like Paris, Milan and London. Very insightful video my guy.

I really hope there's more of this, this kind of informal curriculum reviews that really describe a lot of what to expect from an institution and, sorta by consequence, their graduates. Plus I feel like, because of that, this format feels like a good alternative sort of guide to those interested in choosing and enrolling in schools as well.

I came across this randomly, and found myself listening to the whole video. We could do with engaging people like you on TV. Have you thought of contacting Sky Arts about possibly making a documentary, or series, about fashion schools? You could even focus on doing 20 min episodes, like this one. You have a gift for making something I had never thought I would want to know about seem really interesting.

Really great video and great content as always! I liked that you mentioned nowadays people don’t study or understand culture so they can’t create things are truly unique. Totally agree with you! I studied at LCF and the best thing they taught me is not about the skills but how to develop ideas and doing right research.

I really appreciate this kind of videos, where you inform us, your viewers regarding fashion institutions where the greatest designers came from. I am really intrigued by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp because there's this certain foundation of learning that the designers like Margiela and Raf Simons learned from this school, making their design timeless and at the same time resonates modernity and forwarding thinking. More power to you

You know what’s interesting I heard that “fashion reflects history” quote attributed to Karl Lagerfeld in the past. Literally they could have both said - ALSO, kind of related to The Royal academy’s fear of a “brain drain” towards fashion, in an interview Craig Green says how he was undeclared when he started at Saint Martins and decided to study fashion Bc it seemed the most exciting.

wow, this is a great something that I've learned today. I think it's important in general to combine both the past + LIFE and the future as a creative, like how you said before that instead of trying to become a bootleg Raf Simons, it would be better to look into what he took inspiration from, like military, music, etc.
also, the culture coverage is spot on, that's all I want to say about that

And this is why I would never look Walter Van Beirendonck's work as cultural appropriation. Just like Picasso, he was able to distill tribal art and understand the "why" rather than the "what" and "how", while still being true to his philosophy and aesthetics, and respectful of his inspiration. Unlike other "designers" who would blatantly copy others' works and claim Duchamp as his lawyer (without even understanding Duchamp's art), and when critics close in and see the hack that he really is, he'd cry systemic racism.

Human societal existence has thrived through adaptation of work for new applications. Copying is like humanity standing still, sometimes even moving backwards, whilst adaptation is moving forward.
Copying displays a lack of creativity, passion and dedication to the art; it is disrespectful. I think the failure in copying comes from taking the object out of a specific environment and time, with a lack of adaptation for a new time and purpose.
On the other hand I see adaptation as an acknowledgement of genius, whilst being authentic to oneself and the current time.
