Its the mixture of codeine and promethazine that ends up making the codeine hit so hard. By itself you’ll get a slight opiate high depending on how well your body converts the codeine into morphine(thats the process codeine goes thru in ur body) and that conversion is different for different people. So 2 people(same size) could take the same amount of codeine but one of them has a liver that converts the codeine better so they get more high than the other person

With codeine appreciable respiratory depression is less likely to occur. Also, unlike morphine, it produces neuronal excitation rather than depression. it's generally better than morphine for temporary pain but it has a low max affective dose and a lot of people have genetic traits that cause allergies to it or just makes it ineffective. personally I prefer codeine for both pain and recreation. It's more euphoric for me and I can buy it without prescription in low doses when tylenol/advil isn't enough.
