富山県南砺(なんと)市井波は日本を代表する木彫りの町です。町の中心を貫く八日市通りに数多くの木彫刻師たちが工房を連ね、石畳の風情ある町並みに鑿を打つ槌音を響かせています。
「井波彫刻」は宝暦13年（1763）に始まる瑞泉寺(ずいせんじ)再建を起源とし、現在まで260年に及ぶ伝統を引き継ぐ木彫刻師たちは、地元および周辺地域の寺院や神社、お祭の山車（曳山(ひきやま)）はもちろん、国内の著名な寺社建築である日光東照宮、京都東本願寺や東京築地本願寺、近年では2018年に復元された名古屋城本丸御殿でもその腕をふるっています。
展覧会では、大胆な深彫りに高度な木彫刻技術が凝縮された寺院彫刻、豪華絢爛な祭り屋台を飾る精緻な曳山彫刻、そして明治期以降に住宅欄間として大きく発展した繊細優美な彫刻欄間などを展示します。また200本以上の鑿と彫刻刀を駆使する制作工程を実際に使われる道具と下絵、映像等でご紹介します。
獅子や龍、さまざまな動植物や名勝の情景が織りなす「物語」を、卓抜した技術で生き生きと描き出す木彫刻の数々は、今もなお各地の建築や人々の暮らしを彩っています。

Inami in Nanto City of Toyama Prefecture is the representative town of wood carving. In the center of the town is Youkamachi-dori Street, where many wood carving studios stand side by side. A passerby can enjoy the sound of hammering chisels which echoes in the atmospheric townscape, with paving stones laid on the street.
Inami wood carvings originated in the reconstruction of Zuisenji Temple which commenced in 1763. Woodcarvers who carry on the 260-year tradition of wood carving are still showcasing their skills on nearby temple and shrine structures, hikiyama festival floats, but also widely famous temples and shrines such as Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Higashi Honganji Temple in Kyoto and Tsukiji Honganji Temple in Tokyo, and in recent years, Honmaru Palace of Nagoya Castle in 2018.
In this exhibition, display items include the carvings for temples and shrines where you can see bold deep relief and advanced carving techniques, elaborate hikiyama carvings that decorate gorgeous festival floats, delicate and graceful ranma carvings that developed as ranma transoms for private houses in the Meiji Era onwards (1868-). Also, the production process, making a full use of more than 200 chisels and carving chisels, will be displayed in videos, sketches and tools that are actually used by the woodcarvers.
Many of the wood carvings crafted, using outstanding techniques, vividly depict narratives through lions, dragons, various animals and plants as well as iconic sceneries that have embellished buildings and people’s lives- for long years and in various places.
