I'm fairly comfortable with music theory, scales and modes nowadays, but that was such a practical lesson David. I wish I had your content around a few years ago when I started on my journey, no doubt it would have fast tracked my progress.

I just guess the tonic note, try minor pentatonic, then try major, then mixolidian and mix them up to just what sounds good. Life is too short.
For A natural minor, (aeolian), G mixolydian, F lydian chord progression,
play A minor pentatonic.

David, been watching & listening to you for a few years now! I've been playing for ever-over 40 years +, I wish I had access to players like you in the beginning!! I have friends from Berkley-Boston who have influenced my playing and approach. But, now I can identify what you are discussing in your videos! I started to pick up the modes again and I was wondering how they apply to my favorite type of music. Do you have some material that applies for instance the dorian scale to .. lets say .. five "popular" metal/hardrock songs? ..
Cool 1 step is a bit weird tho. Before you draw the notes to the neck you should find the chords in the same position lets say in the 5th fret position so after that immediately all notes will be there in your preferred area. (Easier to transfer the chords there first than transfer the notes one by one.) Cool video tho. thx.

It makes you aware of the relationship between chords and scales. Obviously very obvious. 😊
Cool. I would just like to add that any note or semitone can be played over any chord progression. It does not really matter because your musical ear will tell you that it works or doesn't. I don't know scooby about scales or modes but I can hear a bum note and tone. I think learning licks and how to move around the fret board and putting the right finger on the right note is where its at. Which is why I like this approach and thanks.

What told you to choose the area of the fretboard where the A minor7 chord was to look for the other notes? Would this work if you had chosen the area where the F chord was? I'm a bit confused is this the same as following the chords?

Good lesson, David. Thank you for putting this together. I think my problem is overthinking. When you said G, Am, and F were the progression, I immediately thought ‘I don’t know any song with that progression. Diatonically, that should be a Fdim.’ I’m overthinking this, aren’t I?
I recognized these chords as being in the key of C Major or, as here, its relative key of A Natural Minor.
This has a very Mark Knopfler feel, doesn't it ?
