Create YOUR Perfect Metal Tone (for 7 String and Down-tuned Guitars)

  • From the EQ to the gain settings on your amp, this video is all about helping you dial in the perfect tone that you love when playing a 7 string, down-tuned, or drop-tuned guitar.
And we're not talking about bedroom or practice tones. We're talking about a ton that's going to work well in the full mix (there's a difference and I explain that in the video here).
Note: 'Good tone' is subjective. And the tone you create today may be different 6 months, 2 years, or 10 years from now.
Also, you want to consider focusing on creating a tone that fits your style and the song, album, or project you're currently working on.
The point of this video is to share some things to think about when dialing in a metal tone that's going to sit well in the mix when 7 string guitars (or low tunings).
***Special thank you to my sponsor, Blackstar. In this video, I'm using the Blackstar HT Venue MK III amplifier.
Check out my complete overview and more tones with this amp in here:
    • Blackstar HT Venue MK ...
I go through all of my EQ settings and share why I have the bass, mids, and treble at certain levels to accommodate my 7 string guitar.
It's also important to note that I'm using a guitar (ESP E-II Horizon FR-7) with active pickups, EMG707. The guitar itself has a more natural bottom end across all strings, not just the lowest string.
These are important factors as you'll need to adjust your gain and settings accordingly.
I also go over some special features that the Blackstar HT Venue MK III amps have and how that affects your tone.
At the end of the video, I share the details of how I recorded this 7 string metal song just for this video.
Again, good tone is subjective. I hope this video helps you dial in a metal tone that you love.
    Keep it Metal,
    Jason

I love how you EQ the 7 string, not cranking the bass and toning it down a bit to tighten it up. You'd handle an 8 string pretty well. 😉😉 LOL. Posted at the 415 mark.

Takes a bit of getting used to that seventh string, but once you do it adds so much depth to tonal harmony!

That was a jam Jason. I bought a 7 string multiscale about 9 months ago and barely play it. It was just too good of a deal to pass up and it supported a local shop instead of the big box. This was inspiring and I have a song that has some very similar parts back in the mid 90's when I got my B.C. Rich Warlock and put a DiMarzio in the bridge. (It was basically attempt at what if Slayer, Sepultura, and Deicide were all in the same band.) I'm going to have to rearrange it to make good use of my 7 string. I think it will be perfect. Thanks for sharing your tuning and string gauge. I also play 9's in standard tuning, I switch to 10's if I'm down tuning.
I also enjoyed your discussion on subjective tone. You can take the same head and plug it into a different cab and it's not going to sound the same. Sometimes I think people don't understand the complete signal chain: input jack -> EVERYTHING in between-> speakers. That's what you hear. Even in the most simplest of setups there are a lot of variables.
    Thanks again. \m/

Perfect tone and 7 string guitar Jason! it doesn't instantly 'sound' to me like a 7 string - you know ridiculous muddy booming bottom end and nothing else, this sounds more like a baritone guitar - a full even mix of the tonal range across all strings without the low B overpowering all the others!

    • @jasonstallworth
      @jasonstallworth  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Some say it does impact the tone but man, I’ve always preferred low action. I was really surprised to hear Yngwie (in the recent interview with Rick Beato) say his action isn’t super low. I’m thinking the scalloped frets help compensate for ease of playability though

Thank you for talking about equaliser and for explaining how to set up a good tone!!
I've recently been looking to upgrade my tones and my setup for myself. I'm playing fishman pickups on a Strandberg and have noticed the active pickups are really different to the passive pickups on all my other guitars.
Out of curiosity Jason, I notice you mainly talk about real amps, pedals and guitars. I personally really like that approach . I have tried modellers and a Headrush unit and am still unsure if I'll go back to something like that.
If I'm looking for something to improve my setup, would you recommend the Blackstar amped for a nice thick metal tone? I like to play clean guitar tone too !
I mainly go for a prog metal tone a bit like John Petrucci from Dream Theater mixed with a modern prog metal sound ( the contortionist) but not super duper djent like periphery.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. I love your playing and keep on shredding Jason :) thank you for the really informative video!!

    • @jasonstallworth

I like the Amped 3 but I do recommend getting an additional OD pedal, and once you do that you’ll also need a noise gate. But that setup sounds great!

This was a great demonstration of how you have achieved a very good guitar tone using a real amplifier, a real cabinet, and a real mic. I am wondering if you have a similar type tutorial while using a digital counterpart? I am struggling to find a seven string tone that I am pleased with, I have access to many tools and gadgets but keep feeling like I'm falling short in clarity. Any help or advice you have would be great.
