Fill the barrel with water! you know when you hit the then ! I've been shooting 1 Gallon antifreeze jugs at 2000 yds with my .338 lapua mag for the last 3 years , fun as hell Frank
Outstanding episode. Not only did you show us how difficult it is to make that shot, but also what could go wrong. Glad to see you made that shot before you ran out of ammo.
Nice shot Larry. My hat too is off to anyone who can make good hits at that kind of distance. I'm proud of our guys Master Corporal Perry and Corporal Furlong from 3PPCLI who pulled off 2000+ meter shots in Afghanistan. Furlong's shot was the world record for a while at 2430m, and Perry's before at 2310m. Then the British guy who went to 2475m, that's nuts..
Greatest show ever. Excellent! I like the information presented, back-story and your personal impression so viewer can experience the event through the screen. Thanks a lot!
I just reached further than my normal 500 to 800 yards this past week. It was the hardest thing I ever did. Nothing in the desert moves to give you an idea what the wind is doing down range. My shots were spread 5 inches vertically and 6-7 feet horizontally. At 300 yards at the range, I can keep my shots inside an inch. At 800 in the desert, I might as well piss in the wind and call it sniping my boots.
spraynpray This was with a 308 using hot loaded 175 SMKs. I tried my 338, and all I got was dust all around me 5 feet. I fired one round and saw/tasted/felt nothing but dust. A 338 silencer is on route.
spraynpray Yep. There are a lot of guys who don't understand that distance in range conditions mean very little to how far you can shoot in the field. Kudos to LAV for using a natural colored target. Not some bright orange thing.
It sure isn't easy. I picked my target location, my shooting location, got to shoot at a static target that I pained bright white. I had a hard time finding my targets (they were concealed), I couldn't hit them because I couldn't make wind calls, and my dope from my ballistic calculator was off by 1.3 mil. It's tough.
spraynpray Keep at it! I'm supposed to get out tomorrow with the standard minimum of 10-15 mph winds predicted... I'm sure it will be higher in reality and It always keeps it interesting. Really jealous of suppressors -- I'm in the awesomely restrictive land of California- --
Checking back in. I got the can for my 338 and it's entirely different than shooting my 308 at 1000 yards. Second round hit, third round hit, fourth round hit, fifth round hit... 338 doesn't give a single shit about wind.
Damn, much respect on getting that shot. I was a sharpshooter in the Army Rangers (Norwegian border jeagers) and we did sharpshooting with an AR (HK G3) on 1200 meters (0.74 miles). That was hard enough. Since that is a 20 round semi rifle, it is faster to adjust your sights, so getting hits was not unrealistic. But never seen anyone try a one mile shot with that rifle.
My dad was a ranger he always said he was special operations forces. He went through sniper school and he was number 3 in the presidents hundred with a 1 3/4 mile shot .308 win

Oh my god, how the fuck are you pulling that off without a scope level in that crazy terrain? Nothing is square or level or anything. That is craziness. Great shooting. :D As an aside, I personally prefer the LaRue mounts. Not cheap, but totally worth it IMO, and compared to the cost of barrels and ammo, rig, range time.... totally worth it to just have a mount that isn't a fucking pain in the ass. In my opinion of course.
CONKAN77 His mounts look weenie. Aside from the fact that they probably weren't torqued to the proper spec (another annoying feature of rings like that) they also may not have been rated for .338. A day of shooting that gun must have been brutal. No envy here. 6.5 Creedmore FTW. Lol.
Whatfor5 it wasn't the mount....it was the picatinny that he had mounted...if lav wasn't using LaRue I'm sure it was an American defense or something similar. It was definitely that picatinny hack job that someone did for him...the lav ain't using no Burris mount lmao his mount and rings probly cost almost as much as one of my precision rigs haha.
Whatfor5 No - to get a Picatinny rail, Sako use an adapter called a "TRG TACTICAL RAIL" - but like others, I use a Spuhr mount which fits the TRG 'rail' with no Picatinny at all. Not sure which rail they were using here.
Larry, I was going to "Like" this video whether you hit it or not. I actually made some hits with my 7mm-08 (wait it gets better) on a grass runway at the crop dusting service where I used to work. Of course it took me about 40 rounds to even hit the ginormous plywood backing that my target was mounted to and another 20 or more to hit the paper one time. The bullet made a keyhole but I can say that I made a one-mile shot. No easy feat.
A mile is a tough shot. I was shooting my Tikka 300W mag on May 4 2015 at a 1620m or a mile in imperial measurement. I was shooting from prone, a far more stable position than Larry here. I was surprised he hit at all leaning over the hood of that Humvee, Nicely done.
I love your longer videos LAV! I hope you do more in the future. I've always wanted to shoot with a spotter, as once the ranges start stretching out, it becomes pretty hard to make accurate calls on your own shots unless you have some very high magnification glass.
Carlos Hathcock was the first certified hardass in American history. Without him there would be no Chris Kyle. He needs so much more recognition than what he gets. He literally started the Marine Corps sniper and killed a Vietnamese general. Also most famous shot through a snipers scope. R.I.P Carlos Hathcock.
K Michael need to go bit further back to the actual origins of design and designation for example, The British Whitworth rifle, used greatly during the American Civil War. Some of these rifles were fitted with ascope on top of the barrel, thus creating the first actual sniper rifle.
I know there were many other snipers before him but you have to realize what that man did in Vietnam by himself. He took out a high ranking officer from the Vietnamese military while a platoon of men walked over him and couldn't find him. Sniping is not just shooting a rifle, it's being a ghost and Hathcock was a master of that method.

Awesome shooting. We all know the frustration with being so dang close to hit a target at extended ranges, I was however happy to see you pull through on the last round.
My first outing at a mile I connected with the right target leg that was holding the target, 6 shots fired.. my 2nd outing i connect with the left leg... my 3rd outing I got on steel at 1000. 13"x13" then went back to the mile, dialed and sent 1round.. it connect with my 18x30" plate 4" left of center... and I'm working alone, spotting my own shots
"My weak point was the mount, and the assumption I made that that Picatinny rail was tight, I won't do that again I promise you" ... "Fuck, the scope is fucking loose again"
You don't need 20mm. I know for sure a .308 win can do about 1 3/4 miles. My dad was a special forces amry ranger that went through sniper school and was number 3 in the presidents hundred.
Not to criticize, more of an observation and a question. I noticed that Larry's finger came off the trigger on at least one of his shots after it broke. I was always under the impression that a propperly done follow through meant your finger was on the trigger until the rifle was finished recoiling. Is this not as big of a deal as I was lead to believe or did Larry just get excited? I know some times I have to dial myself back in after I get excited as I'm sure some people do. He made one hell of a shot. Very impressive to say the least.

Well done LAV.
That "Scott" is from the British Armed Forces and I thought it was a .338 Lapua they used in their A.I. rifles...?
Had to tighten the mount twice and Still made the shot. Amazing.
Makes you realise the skill of that british sniper who got the 2,475 m confirmed kill.
Luck*, it was pure luck, guy wasn't even trying to hit the Terry, only to scare him off and spotted saw the dude drop
QuicheDude You realise he took 9 shots before hand to gauge the range, scope etc, so i would say it was pretty calculated

TheTabztar That just editing. When he said there was one bullet, there was nothing else there.
