    The fact that she crashed as soon as they built her we can agree and call the r101 'Maiden'. The fact that zepplins are made of metal we then can call her 'Iron Maiden'. So the fact Iron Maiden made a song about 'Iron Maiden' is mind boggling.

    This is easily the most unconventional song Maiden have ever done, so it makes the difference seem even greater, especially from Prowler, which is one of the more simple songs on the debut album. This one is actually more of a Bruce Dickinson solo song, with Maiden as his backing band. It's all his brainchild, since he's huge into aviation and its history.

  • @jinzoslegions
    @jinzoslegions 5 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    The thing with your guys' logic is that you're comparing the opening song of a debut album, which is typically supposed to be the shortest, fastest song on the record, to the last song on a record, which is typically the longest, most detailed song (especially with Maiden). If you wanted to compare a song from their 1st record to Empire it would have to have been The Phantom of the Opera. Your talk afterwards was really good though I enjoyed it.

    Maiden have written many epic songs especially in the 2000's (Ex: The Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Paschendale, Dance of Death, For The Greater Good of God, The Legacy, The Longest Day, When the Wild Wind Blows, etc.) but I don't think they ever got as intricate or inspired with those tracks as they did with this one.

    • @jinzoslegions
      @jinzoslegions 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still love those songs though.

    • @tominatorxx
      @tominatorxx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paschendale is the exception though. Just like this one there are a lot of intricate details in it. Starting off with morse code (played on the hi-hat). The moment in the middle of the song where they have that riff after the the first reoccurance of the morse code, is meant as the foreshadowing and realisation of the soldier that he will soon have to climb out of his trench into the killingfields.
      Which then later gets followed up with the same morse code beginning (to signify we are back in the "scene" where we earlier left off) but now there's the exact moment the soldier has been afraid of. The heavy riff signifies the climbing out of the trench and running straight into the killing fields where chaos breaks loose.
      Even the lyrics right before this heavy riff part gives some insight in what the soldier is thinking:
      Cruelty has a human heart
      Every man does play his part
      Terror of the men we kill
      The human heart is hungry still
      I stand my ground for the very last time (- knowing he will most likely die soon)
      Gun is ready as I stand in line
      Nervous wait for the whistle to blow (- the signal for the attack)
      Rush of blood and over we go...
      And then like I said they cut back to reality with the morse code. And paint an image with the music of the horrible situation.
      Basically the lyrics are the soldiers thoughts and the music itself is the reality he has to endure.
      Then the last morse code part on the hi-hat is when the battle is over. And the last lyrics are the last thoughts of a dying soldier on the Battlefield in Paschendale.
      Empire Of The Clouds is definitely an amazing song with lots of intricate details. (the SOS messages, the piano playing that signifies the crashing down of the R101 with the drums that bring over that the time before the crash is getting shorter and shorter, the drums right after the departure of the R101 signifying the storm, etc.).
      But it doesn't have that double perspective as much as Paschendale does. Anyway that's just my opinion. And to be honest Empire Of The Clouds is probably my 4th favourite Maiden song. It just happens to be that Paschendale is my 2nd favourite. I agree with the other songs though, they are great but not as intricate or as inspired as these two. :)

    I think, being British we have an innate fatalism and sense of irony. We expect the people in charge t f**k it up, so we just shrug our shoulders and get on with it. It's not about unquestioning obedience, in it's own way it's a kind of quiet defiance. It's about integrity. We also know it's absurd. It's why we celebrate heroic failure almost more than victory.

    Titanic and R101... two exercises is HUMAN ARROGANCE that ended in tragedy.
    The ambition to build "godlike" transports, larger than life, faster than anything before, relying too much in their own grandiose accomplishments, and ignoring any and all possibility that there may actually be flaws or weaknesses in these achievements.
    How many more times must these kinds of events happen before man finally knows his place in the great scheme of things... or at least, prove their worth to stand among greatness, by conceding to as much humility as they do to pride.

    Are you the same person you were 14 years ago? Because between Prowler and Empire, there are 35 years between them. The world changed so drastically between the time of Prowler to Empire, that:
    The berlin wall fell, China grew economically to replace both the Soviet Union and a bunch of European countries on the world's list, the internet happened, the child mortality rate in Africa improved from European 1860's standard, to European 1950's standards.
    There's a world of difference between not just 1980's Maiden and 2015's Maiden, but the world itself has not stood still for one day since technology started spreading and evolving around the 1880 and it's dramatic changes has increased and increased.

    Iron Maiden are and have been my all time favorite band for over thirty years. They are still putting out amazing music and are still one of the most amazing live bands ever. I know that you guys did not care for the song Prowler, but do not let that stop you from listening to other songs from the first two albums that had Paul Dianno as the lead singer. There are some incredible songs from the first two albums that Iron Maiden still play live sometimes on regular tours and specialty tours such as Phantom Of The Opera, Wrathchild, Iron Maiden, and Running Free. I love all four eras of Iron Maiden. The Paul Dianno era, Bruce Dickinson first era, Blaze Bayley era, and the second Bruce Dickinson era are all legendary in my opinion.

    Hey Vin and Sori are you guys gonna go see Iron Maiden this summer? I’m in LA with my wife and we are going to see them in September. We already saw them 2 years ago on there Book of Souls tour. You guys should totally go it’s a memory you’ll keep with you forever. They are the best and when you are there they make you feel like a part of the show 🤘🏻😆

    I love how much Maiden has progressed and went in many different directions throughout the decades, still even in this song, it's so distinctly Maiden.

    Another thing i've always loved about this song is the way the guitar is mimicking the flight. At first the solo is incredibly happy (probably representing the lift off and cheering on the ground) and then the guitar "ascends" and goes higher and higher...then the storm approaching and the music just turns sinister the more it goes. Maiden is really good at this kind of stuff. Immaculate storytellers in lyrics and in music.

    The Book of Souls is the first and only album I've ever pre-ordered. Got it a day early and went proper old school with it - Headphones on, listened to the whole thing from start to finish.
    Then it got to this song and.....wow.....I was blown away! I knew it was going to be something special just from the opening notes alone. By the end I was stunned by how good it was. I must have hit repeat about 7 or 8 times and listened to it for well over an hour.
    It's an absolute masterpiece! Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. The final crescendo is so powerful and moving. When I tell people that Iron Maiden are the best band in the world, this is the song I point people towards as proof.
    Also, I apprectiate that you guys didn't pause it once and just let it play. Other TH-camrs would have paused it numerous times to talk over it, but this is not a song you pause. This is musical story telling at it's absolute finest!

    A great reaction to an awesome song. Not sure if it's been mentioned in the other comments but one of the reasons this was a story that Bruce has long wanted to tell was that at one point (Not sure if he still is or not) he was investing heavily in new airship technology (Airlander 10) that actually flew from the same hangar at Cardington as the R101. These lyrics kind of reference that.
    "Here lie their dreams as they stand in the sun
    On the ground where they built, and the engines they run
    To the moon and the stars, now what have we done?
    Oh the dreamers may die, but the dreams live on
    Dreams live on
    Dreams live on"
    My name is Jon and I'm an Iron Maiden addict

    The fact this song is based on a TRUE STORY (the destruction of the British airship R-101 on October 5th, 1930) just puts a chill down your spine. You can hear, and FEEL, those men die. What an absolute masterpiece.

    @VinAnd Sori Of course Iron Maiden is evolved in 40 years but not as much as you think. They have the same musical style elements even in the 1st album. You're judging their 1st album with one song at the moment. They have those short opening songs about simpler subjects in almost their every album. Listen to Phantom Of The Opera from their debut album. It's the early sign of the legendary band coming to life that can produce these long epics. Of course it still sounds different but you'll understand.

    .Beautiful song and amazing reaction. Based on what song you were reacting to you I would like to make a couple recommendations for future songs. One is Bruce Dickinson who was along with Adrian Smith from iron maiden and the song is Jerusalem. The other song is passion Dale hotel from world war one wire over half 1 million people died and a several month long battle. The third would be the longest day by iron maiden and that is about the D day invasion but either of these three songs the pack would be a good review. Rock on

    I've seen Iron Maiden about a dozen times, they are the best storytellers ever. Their concerts are epic, every time I've seen them they never disappoint ever. I too have been following them since the late 70's early 80's. One of my favorite bands from the British invasion era, Black Sabbath will always be my favorite though. UP THE IRONS, Iron Maiden forever.

    Its a fact that i like Dickinson more than Di'Anno and i like the "evolution" of Iron Maiden after their Di'Anno Era BUT you got to give early Iron Maiden a chance since they had GREAT songs like Phantom Of The Opera, Remember Tomorrow etc and that doesnt mean that Di'Anno wasnt a great singer. Listen to Phantom Of The Opera (there is also a live version with Dickinson that i love and i must admit that i prefer just because i like Dickinson's voice on that one) or Remember Tomorrow (thats my favorite by Di'Anno so this might be a better choice if you want to do a song with Di'Anno). Its wrong to judge a band (even a specific era of that band) by just one song.
