Exactly how I see it. Sometimes stuff just happens, and life isn't "fair". It's a competition and ultimately only one person can win. Who cares if you have a harder road now or later? You still have to beat those people to win no matter what. Maybe Mena and Caba would have met up in the quarter final of CC instead of the group stage, what does it matter? How is that "fairer"? They'd still have to fight either way. The ultimate goal is to win and become the sole champion no matter what. If anything in this situation they could get their match out of the way early and still both qualify for the top sixteen instead of knocking the other out if worst came to worst.

It sucks that people who should at least make it to top 16 might not even get out of group. This is the exact reason that we have seeding in competitions.
The only reason I can think of for why this CPT season has been so chaotic is that Capcom is trying to see what’s working and what’s not. With how messy this whole CPT season has been, from beginning to end, hopefully Capcom resorts back to last years format.
I really do enjoy the region diversity though, it allows players who would’ve never had a chance to qualify otherwise, not necessarily because of skill, but because of lack of travel to offline tournaments, to actually show how strong they really are.
Yeah, the complaint against the regional system kind of feels like bias against other regions. Someone from a smaller country is going to have a harder time qualifying under the older system then someone in a larger region due to the availability of tournaments and internet restrictions. This way you grow the game and the talent pool in all regions instead of just major regions like US and Japan.
These regions should have to earn their spots though imo they should have some kind of system for that. If they just job out every year maybe they should have only one spot instead of 2. Japan deserves more spots idc what anyone says. Make the regions earn it with a fair system.
The rise of Pakistani players in Tekken was accomplished even without a system like this just the Pakistani players being that good. They just traveled and won alot of tournaments. If a place like Pakistan can produce some of the best fg players in the world other regions really have no excuse.

Capcom is doing everything just like last year but don't realise that the game has changed, the competitive landscape has changed, and we have a new wave of cadual players. We were used to SFV's ecosystem and knew how it worked, but for newbies it hits different.
Nah, this was almost the same format as the last CPT for SF5+ 3 offline events. Capcom is slowly phasing out the importance of locals and this is just the next step for that. Online is sadly how Capcom intends to move forward with competitive play.

Honestly, the people that are mad at the games DLC and stuff coming out slower need to please chill. We keep talking about how the video game and anime industry need to care for their worker better and how the way dev teams are being overworked to death. We need to understand as consumers that a year or more for an update is a fine time to wait and if you're dopamine hungry brain can't take the wait... play another game in the meantime! These expectations on new content, new content, new content are actually unhealthy...

Thr biggest problem with the old format was ircc 45% of the events were in USA. There was a lot of strong players in smaller regions that were as good as a lot of the top US players but under the old format meant it was hard for them to get exposure and sponsored through tournaments. (Also harder for sponsors to justify sponsoring them when they coukd sponsor a US based player of similar skill that would cost them less with travel)It would have to be an Arslan situation where they would need to win a big tournament to potiently get a big sponsorship and give their scene exposure.
I think Capcom realizes that and its less work for them to just do online qualifiers rather then reach out to the TOs in smaller regions who run there events to turn it into a CPT event and help with production ect. For the growth of the game and esports side of thing it makes sense why capcom does it this way
Offline tournaments are really cool, but they heavily heavily heavily favor the global north. For a multitude of reasons, but mainly money.
A player from central or south america will struggle to even have the chance to compete in the biggest tournaments. This also affects media attention, recognition and a multitude of factors.
Going from this, I believe you have to allow for the reasoning that this players are good, hence why I'm fine with a world cup style draw.
Give them a chance, discover new stars from the rest of the world and see what happens. Maybe nothing, maybe something. Its the magic of the world cup.
CPT or any fighting game circuit is not the World Cup, they'll won't succeed by imitating a sport because people mainly root for players, not countries.

Country rep is a big deal and facilitate global community as a whole. Middle East Tekken scene is the most recent example of previously unknown communities being discovered.
@@kagerou254 no way you can say that after knowing the story of Bangladesh's player that got out of CC because of Visa issues. Local news wouldn't have never covered Street Fighter or any other FG there if it weren't for the country diversification Capcom aimed for. Loved players weren't as good as they are right now from the very beginning. People grew to like them just because they were getting better and better each time they showed up in tournaments. And they were able to show up to offline tournaments mainly because of life privileges. Seeing people of many other countries who wouldn't have the chance to be there otherwise, is amazing. However it's also sad to see less representation of countries in which the overall player base level is above other nations, like Japan for example. Let's hope for the next year to have a middle ground system between past and present CC formats.

Capcom treats CPT as a way to showcase more diverse regions in the hopes of boosting SF6's popularity instead of strictly being about a tournament gathering the best and more importantly consistent players in the year. Can't really imagine Capcom going back to the old ways where offline premiers are the focus.

Okay, I do get the group F drama but I think you're overselling the situation in my humble opinion. One could argue that the players were seeded in the sense that Capcom treated every event under this year's pro tour as a separate event and held no specific event higher than the other (say winning Evo was no different than winning one of the online world warrior events). The players that were placed in pools had each won one of the acknowledged pro tour events. Unless your argument is that Capcom should value certain one event over another (ie. Evo over an online world warrior event), I am not sure I agree with the idea that the players were not seeded.
In Invitational section of Core-A Gamings video on "Finding the Best" he definitely highlights the advantages of invitational tournaments that utilize the round robin format. The group stage easily reflects the invitational characteristics mentioned in the video, so I guess I am not sure what part of the video is being referenced. I definitely agree it was a good video and definitely worth a rematch as it was for me.
Also, I do feel some of the FGC are unintentionally disrespecting the other players in the group, going as far as calling some of the players "filler". Don't get me wrong, the traditional system provided a bit of consistency for professional players to earn spots on the tour through being able to qualify for events in regions outside of their own. However, I'd argue that the current format for Capcom Cup has champions from each region participating. Now whether professional players are willing to accept them as champions may be a different matter.
I do agree that more offline events are needed and Capcom should take a look at the structure of the pro tour but I would hate to see them eliminate the online and world warrior events that brought new players to the scene and eliminates the dream of the average scrub becoming a champion through hard work.

TBH outside of the last two groups the other groups have more than 2 killers. Sure this one has more, but this situation was bound to happen regardless.

For how absolutely amazing the beta, launch, and EVO hype this awesome game got, Capcom has COMPLETELY dropped the bag with content and Season 1. Cool new DLC so far, but incredibly shitty CPT format, shitty marketing, and incredibly mid additional content, including the expensive costume fiasco, with a bewildering emphasis on Battlehub costumes over substance.

as someone who remembers cpt in 2015, going back to that format where big LANs matter again would fix many of these issues.
The pro tour peaked in 2014 and 2015. 2015 especially.
You can't expect people to spend $2000 on flight tickets every couple months just to compete.
Hmm. What if they had done it Magic: the Gathering style, where they play rounds of Swiss pairing (in this case, six rounds) and then cut to top 8 and have an elimination tournament with those players? I'm just talking theoretically, here.

Group of Death, it happens in most big competitions from "regular" sports, its just sad that this one in the Cap Cup has Mena and AngryBird the top 2. But i guess everything is a learning experience maybe Capcom will learn from this and improve for next one.

I kinda understand why Capcom did it this way. So i agree and disagree. Getting players in underrepresented markets is important for longevity and important as a business for Capcom to gain more global support to entice more sales in those areas because it allows these other not as known areas to have their own heros and spur up their own aggressive fighting game scenes. I care about the stories also, however, only people like us care about the stories, From a business perspective i think Capcom did it right, we have to remember why Capcom is able to offer a 2 million dollar prize pool. The sales and at the end of the day, that matters to them more than the individual stories and if FGC expects to grow to the size of other game communities , these are the types of structures thats needed to aid global support, not just dominated by US & Japan.
You’re right. The tournaments are marketing. While Capcoms goal is more sales, those sales can lead to a bigger talent pool in worldwide tournaments, a healthier player base for quicker online matchmaking across more regions, and a likelihood that the game gets more content and support for years to come.
I agree with you, i dislike the idea of having to travel to compete as that sounds annoying and expensive ( im not at that level of competition too lol ), also makes things more interesting seeing people from all over the world there.
Personally i am a bigger fan of this format.

I think this strategy from Capcom is basically a marketing exercise. They are willing to trade pure competition for representation across the world. My guess is they believe this will encourage more engagement (and more importantly, sales) from new and growing markets. This is a long term play to increase the overall fan base, and maximize revenue, at the expense the competitiveness (and arguably quality) of the tournament.
From that perspective I can see why they would lean more on regionalized qualifiers instead of universal point rankings. It also explains why group stages are organized to maximize the regional diversity of the later stages.
I won't pretend to know the financials behind it all, but my guess is that this tournament is not a direct moneymaker for the company. So they see it as a marketing tool to expand brand awareness and sales globally. In the long run, such a strategy could also yield higher level play as new regions participate in greater numbers, thus increasing the chances of talent to appear from regions not traditionally strong in fighting games. But ultimately that is probably not the primary goal - this is a product from a publicly traded company after all. They are legally obligated to make as much money as possible.
All that said - I personally think the decision to regionalize the group stage is a step too far. I want to see players from all over the world and to expand this game that I love as far and wide as possible. So fine, give some underrepresented regions a leg up in getting participants to the tournament. But I think this ultimately punishes the strongest competitors too much.
There is a balance to strike between competitiveness and inclusiveness, as well as a balance between people who win the right tournament and people who consistently play well (another angle beyond the scope of this discussion but I think is worth noting). I think this set-up misses the mark.
Top comment. Brilliant analysis. If a Japanese or US player wins, nothing really changes for capcom. However, if a Brazilian or an African player wins, suddenly sales explode in those regions. Brilliant marketing from capcom.
imo, I’d rather see a 32 player bracket, Top 30 global ranking, 1 from Regional Tournament Qualifiers that don’t have enough points, and 1 from the LCQ. I don’t give a shit about regional representation if it is at the expense of tournament quality.
I think the region diversity is pretty much the best option so that every region get's paly against a completely new region but it seems like people are downplaying the other players and counting them out when they completely worked their ass off to get that spot. On top of that while i get we want to see a certain match this just goes to show that a good player should be able to take on any challenging opponent that's presented to them.
Saying some people who probably didn't earn is just wrong sense they all made it and we didn't.
I consider this fair, though it may suck for possible entertainment presentation.
This is the reason why I really liked the way the Tekken World Tour Finals does it where where the players themselves determine which groups they want to be in and the order is done by their current rank during the season.

I know you mentioned the tournament infrastructures not being recovered as one of the reasons for less offline focus. I've been mulling this over, but I have to wonder if there's been less emphasis on offline because of how much traveling and strain that incurs for qualifications. I'm sure that for career players that's no issue, but that does become a barrier for the every man that wants to compete. Maybe they could be incorporating these regional onlines, with something akin to the dojo system from Tekken, running along side circuit points. At least that way they can have paths for the regional folks to compete, and career players to still travel and go after points.

I prefer a naturally generated tournament as opposed to one that is engineered for max viewability, storylines, and cute rivalry.

The whole idea of creating groups so that you get the most watchable tourney never sat right with me.
Imagine if you got a bad matchup as a player that possibly wouldn't have happened because a TO decided the watchability of his tournament was more important than its integrity.
Seeding is to give you the most competitive tournament, not most watchable

Silly me.
I would argue making sure that you place the most popular or seemingly skilled players away from each other until the end of the tournament, not only gives them an easier run through the tournament, it disrupts potential underdog storylines, and creates an inherently unfair advantage for them that hinders authentic competition.
Seeding as a practice has its roots in watchability, not competitiveness. The reason it started in Tennis and is used in all the major American sports leagues today is because those industries are entertainment first, and first day upsets of a 3 day tournament can be bad for business and profits.
There has been a big discussion in professional Tennis, the sport where seeding began and got the name, to remove them entirely, because they create unfair tournaments for those who are top seeded. Top tennis players have argued its akin to giving a track and field player 5 less meters to run than their competitors because they did better in previous events before this one.
Everytime the argument comes up, it's squashed by the argument that it would hinder watchability, and lower the profits of an industry that is about entertainment before it is about the game.
I really dislike when people want something, but want to be wishy washy with saying why they want something.

I top to bottom 1000% disagree with everything you mentioned in regards to the purpose of seeding. Please watch the core a gaming video regarding seeding. If you disagree with that analysis, then I have nothing left to argue you with you we just disagree fundamentally. A more competitive tournament improves the viewability of the tournament, as the best players end up fighting closer and closer to the championship set to ensure there is tension in the final rounds rather than just blowouts all on one side of the bracket.
Of course we could just put all top 6 players in the world in one group, making the other placings in the top 16 meaningless as only 1st and 2nd have value in that point. Seeding ensures more placements outside of 1st and 2nd are more accurate in a reflection of the players skill amongst the field, rather than being the result of "luck" and "randomness" in the draws.
If you disagree here, I can't do anything else to change your mind. We'll have to disagree
I was in the "this is dumb" camp but the more I'm thinking about it, the less I think it's a real issue. Do I want Angrybird vs MenaRD in grand finals? Not really. 😅 I'm more interested in upsets than anything, I don't care much for this specific rivalry. So from this pov, then Group F is great because it increases the chances of upsets. It's more chaotic and less predictable. If you try to seed players too much it leads to obvious outcomes.
What if Ending Walker eliminates Mena from the very beginning? I personally would love to see it. 😂 But maybe my anti Mena bias is showing. :)
On one hand you can say it makes the matches less important than they could be, but it's also going to make it that much more intense for the players because they'll be fighting for their lives.
This could've been avoided if they seeded regions by strength like in most other esports
I have to say one of the main issues with lack of hype leading up to capcom cup isn't that it was online mostly. It was that where the fuck do you watch the events? They were on like 30 different channels between twitch and youtube. That right there just makes it nearly impossible to actually keep up or care. Online tournaments can be as hype as offline for the most part. It just requires actually putting an effort in to make an exciting event.

People are seriously under estimating competitors like snake eyez. That man has beaten Justin Wong on a few occasions, brought his team back from defeat solo and other feats. He may not put himself out there as much as Mena or Angry bird have, but he could be a silent killer in this competition.
As a football (soccer) fan I don't see any problems, classic champions league/world cup. The group of death is always fun to watch
by the end of the tournament, no one cares much about the group of death anymore, it’s all about the finalists. Also in football, all the matches are big events, here we’re gonna have hours upon hours of random matches with these random “group of death” matches sprinkled in between.

the thing is, they have something like seeding, where the best 8 teams are put into pot 1, second best 8 into pot 2, and so on, it's not perfect but it's at least SOMETHING, sadly capcom couldn't do that so we got complete randomness
I still remember that 2014 group of death upset. People cared so much about England, Italy, and Uruguay, and pretty much considered Costa Rica nonexistent in that group, only to get stunned by seeing Costa Rica topping the group lol. We may see another upset like that in this group F. Also, whoever makes it out of this group, if not Menard or Angrybird, will do really well in the knockout rounds.

Huge over reaction from people , there are top players in each group. There will be a great final. Old system was focused on pro players, with this format you can get a possible tekken situation like with Pakistan, or surprise like Jabahim from SA beating Tokido.
Oh! and secondly we have to be grateful for what we have in SF community, MK sells way more than SF however MK players dont get anything close to the pro season SF gets. SF is trying to increase their sales by tapping new markets and getting more casuals in and keep the pro scene happy and pleased. So i think we should look at this outside looking in and also be appreciative of what we do have and remember this is a business. It could be much worse.

As a viewer, CPT as it stands right now, is complete garbage; nobody except for competitors care about online World Warrior tournaments, less international competition at major tournaments (not inc. EVO & Capcup), uneven representation regarding regional strength. Group F is just a byproduct of how poorly structured the entire circuit is. Although, the winner of the tournament might be the strongest player, no one can take a look at this top 48 & honestly say that these are the best players the world has to offer. In a system with seeding based on performance, both players have earned their seed.

Take a page from the NCAA Basketball 64 team tournament.
Yes there are automatic conference winners. This could he similar to regional winners. However there are also at large selections based on resume and rankings. So if a team comes from a strong conference, they can still be selected. This could balance out the problem of how strong Japan is. These rankings also affect seeding.
Regardless, the seeding and grouping this year is just ridiculous from a viewer perspective.

Alright that Core-A-Gaming video is talking about seeding in open brackets and directly contrasts them without how things like invitationals work. Capcom Cup goes through multiple regions and a years worth of pools. If it's working properly every player there has a shot at that 1m.
I honestly have no clue what you're basing players strength off of in metrics where they haven't even played. This isn't like the Core-A-Gaming example of Guy and Pablo or examples like DSP running through a weak tournament. These people were elevated out of their region, but you're attaching crazy importance specifically only on names you already know. Yeah it'd be sick of seeing Du v Punk for the 15th time this year but this time at GF with a milly on the line, but only if they actually can earn it.
Everybody saw that bracket and started balling out of control indirectly calling people who went through hard tournaments in their region as "weaker players" when what they actually mean is "couldn't afford to fly to EVO" or "hasn't been professional in the public eye". Which is nonsense. Seeing is absolutely worthwhile in open bracket tournaments where the two likely winners are separated, but this isn't that.
More importantly, and why I made this post at all, I can just see people already revving up that if UMA327 wins, despite the fact that he went through strong talent like Chris Wong (who I don't doubt people are also downplaying) if going to be for no reason other than the seeding. Doesn't matter that Chris Wong ran a good set against MenaRD and won out over him at France, nah it's the seeds. Bogus.
Just by virtue of you not showing up to the majority of offlines. Bogus.
I'm well versed with every player in this bracket and a lot of people are definitely going to be surprised if they haven't been in tune with the scene with how strong many of these players are.
My reference to the core a gaming video and discussion on seeding is to show why it matters. I also mention how you CANT seed in this format because of no inter region meddling to make the seed based off.
The point is the format has issues. I'm not saying there's a perfect solution, but I much more prefer the 2019 and before offline circuit to this.

Even worse, because there are a lot of nobodies clogging up this CCCup we got more randoms and nobodies, ruining my fanfic of AngryBird vs MenaRD revenge match in the grand final. Not group stages matches due to some shitty RNG. We want entertainment, Capcom should make it like Valorant or LoL franchise tourney, so that we can eliminate these randoms and just our favorites playing at tourney, because fuck those randoms ruining my preferable tourney storyline

@@Brian_F Large issues with this format have been based in presentation. Single matches followed by 4-8 minute breaks are bogus.
The benefits of potential improvement shouldn't be wholesale discarded. As it is in this season, a person's chances aren't limited by their wallet. They're not put into a position of brute forcing into a CC slot by simply having the money to fly to the most offline events. 400+ for a 3-4 day room, + ticket, and nutrition is nonsense.
2019 is an odd year. I'm not going to toss shade nor mention names but we had a player who made it via nothing but points. When a strong player who won his regions online still couldn't make it in despite being (as we found out in subsequent years) inarguably stronger than most of the competition.
Going back to that as an example of a highpoint? Bogus.

I understand that the FGC is relatively grassroots, but I don't think your ability to get One Million Dollars should be determined by the equivalent of a Sunday night bingo game. I wish they would at least TRY to seed it correctly.
No mention of Ren and Jabhim being in the same group? That’s the biggest issue to me. They qualified from the same region and still have to fight each other in groups.

I mean, what they could do to avoid these grouping fiascos is simply to give players rankings and spread the players evenly with their ranks in mind. Idk, bring back points so that the players that win and place high the most get the top ranks.

if you like pro level play you're fine, if you tune in to the stream ir watch the matches later its fine, for the pros tho it is caotic

Seems like the fgc wants to grow but some of these people aren't willing to accept that alot of big sports esports world cup/finals are like this that allows more representation and 'randoms' and groups of death, so I mean really depends on if the fgc wants to actually grow or keep watching the 'favorite' players and story lines.

We need to force capcom to change that. It is sad that we have a system to make a better competition but it is not being used. This tournament will make things clear. Hope they change it to the next one.

Nah, this is hype! Aa far as a story goes, this is great. Brothers fighting and the SFL run back? Delicious!! With this placing, they have to fight vs them potentially getting eliminated before grand finals. If Mena and Amjad make it out to finals, we get another run back. Amazing 👏
It is very important that the next cup will have in person qualifiers that get more seats than the online ones.
I also think they need to figure out the Japan situation... not really sure if there is a good solution to this but certainly should be able to improve over the current systems.

These concerns and complaints are valid but essentially growing pains. Zoom out to the 5 year plan, the goal for Capcom is to grow the pie by giving different communities the spotlight, attract sponsors, get money, grow the pie. You need to seed the community somehow and give them time to grow. If people have better ideas, then try to get into the board room that makes these decisions with the 5 year plan in mind. Instead of thinking zero-sum and evenly (unfairly?) distributing the slices, how do you grow the whole pie?
One way to look at it though is that Mena and Angry Bird may certainly have never even played. As long as its streamed be happy we get to see it!

The seeding was fair, and idom made the upsets to make it happen. You can't argue that idom "had an easier bracket " because he objectively didn't

I’d like to see them doing the old offline points system again mixed with an online premier from each region. If the purpose of the Pro Tour is to develop scenes in underrepresented countries, having Capcom sponsor their tournaments as offline premiers would really help.
They could do the online world warrior again instead of the online premiers but I think having 2 different point systems would be too much
IMO the best way to do the random drawings was to have two or more groups of players to draw from. Select those groups carefully to ensure that nobody from the same region is in the same group/pile. Draw from a pile until it is depleted and move on to the next one. There still may be some strong groups, but this guarantees that you won't end up with MenaRD and Caba in the same group.
I don't mind death pools. I just hate seeing players that play and travel together potentially are forced to compete so early. Mena vs Caba in grand finals could have been possible and would have been a great story.
Imagine being in Group F and not making it into top 16 because of tie breaker rules. Being eliminated by an actual coin flip seems like some spicy drama.
Kinda sad to see SF6 start so strong and sputter down in this way with sparse updates and releases along with a messy pro tournament series. Don't get me wrong, we as FGC players and spectators are feasting with this much content, but SF6 was poised to be at the top of the mountain with the quality of their base game, and now they're slowly fumbling the momentum they had.
