My Czechoslovakian great Grandma would make these, but we knew them as Kolache Christmas cookies. Kolache is an original Czech name for small, bite-sized sweet pastries with different kinds of filling. The most common filling is jam, poppy seed, or nut filling. Fresh cream cheese (called tvaroh in Czech) or yeast dough is usually used to make kolache cookies. I made them this year as I had not had them for 35 years! Your recipe is close to the original one we had passed down. We don't put sugar in the dough but work the dough up and cookies up on a layer of freshly sprinkled powder sugar. As you are working up the cookies you keep putting a fresh lager to help form them
@@ModernRefugee He has a video of him making them in the "Cooking with Mrs. P" section of his channel. Mrs. P has some Russian dishes that she makes also.
Reminding me of memories here. My Grandmother (of German descent) and my Mother always made these cookies at Christmas. I can remember helping make these cookies as a child.
I remember these well long time since I last had one. The cream cheese is a new one to me. My wife and our youngest son are celiacs so that means gluten free so, with the cream cheese it may lend itself to be made as a gluten free cookie. Need to send this video to my wife.
My husband has an aunt who is allergic to eggs. I have a few Christmas goodies I make that are naturally egg-free (meaning no alternative ingredients required, they simply don't call for eggs) but I kinda wanna make these last minute for her. I've been trying to get us to eat through all our jams anyway. Two birds one stone! Thanks for sharing 😊
I have a cookbook that was put out by my grandmothers church from many, many years ago. It is recipes from all the church members. I love that book and use it every year! Happy Christmas!
Blessings to you my brother, and thank you for all you do sharing tips, tricks and information throughout the year. About to start my baking for the day!
Those cookies look Awesome MR. My wife did her baking yesterday...peanut butter chocolate chip, molasses, and date nut pinwheels. Hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas. Thanks for your fine content.
My Swedish grandmother was a yooper. And she always made something similar but with dates. Most people didn't want to try them. But when they did, they realized how great they were
Thank y'all for sharing. Grandmother and my mother made these every Christmas. Brought me right back to my childhood in the kitchen watching these being made and helping put in the jam. Only difference is they would put nuts in some of them. Wonderful memories. Y'all have a blessed day.
Love thumbprints!!! Grandma always made these, but the cookie dough balls were rolled in ground walnuts before baking. My daughter is carrying on the tradition and baked some for us this year.
My wife just made Pecan Tassies which is similar except the filling is like a miniature pecan pie. WAY too good! LOL. Yours would be so versatile with innumerable filling possibilities. Another episode for Kitchen Refugee. Thanks!
Like on of the other commenters, my dough is like your thumb prints cookie dough but I press it into a mini muffin tin and put a pecan pie like filling in it. Haven’t made thumbprint cookies in a while. I think I will but fill them with my new batch of Christmas jam. Blessings for a Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year.
