    I’m in the process of designing a plinth for a 301 I inherited from my grandfather. My uncle had it in storage and I was told he purchased it in Germany in the 60’s while working as a doctor for the US military.
    I work for a turntable company and we just purchased a industrial CNC router to make our plinths, so I‘ve been wanting to create something similar. This has been a great help and I may make a video of the process. I’ve been machining metal for years, but I’m new to woodworking so this is invaluable information. Thank you so much!!!

      Is that glue hazardous?

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The glue is Urea "formaldehyde". I think formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. It's the same stuff they use to make MDF boards, toxic, carcinogenic , just plain bad for you. I don't use that glue any more because it's a pain in the butt to source and I need to buy 5 liters of it and it goes bad in about 3-4months. These days I just use Titebond Original which works well and is easier to use.

    Very professional project and DIY video. Nonetheless, its not your average audiophile enthusiast who has this wood shop equipment for such a professional project. Yet, I love the video as a potential project for 2023; along with a vintage Boston Acoustic T1030 rebuild. Only the best high-end turntables would be good candidates since the exotic woods are costly as is labor intensive. Thank you for this video.

    Really handy tip with the jigsaw and cutting the line with a knife. I like the Jarrah but to be honest the Lighter Blackwood looks great too, I'd find it very hard to make a choice. It's like picking your favourite movie! Great video and incredibly informative.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I don't score a line with the knife before jigsawing, the end result is a complete mess. The jigsaw is such as hack tool really, which is why I clean up everything with a router afterwards. You said it would be difficult to choose a favourite movie and my initial reaction was "pfft easy! it's....ummm....hmmm...well shit! there all good! dammit" 😀

      Jarrah is a nice timber to work with. It's hard, heavy, and dulls tools. But it has very consistent results when machining and edge profiling. It is somewhat disliked for furniture because people tend to shift away from "red" furniture, preferring the blonds or light browns.

      The diameter of the holes were 120mm, though it could have been smaller. The distance from the spindle to the center of the holes is determined by the length of the arms, such as 12" or 9". From memory, I don't think there was enough space to get a 9" arm mounted properly though.

    What is glue line "creep"? I've never heard this term before.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The timber and the glue move at different rates (expansion and contraction). Imagine pulling the joint apart a little bit, which will stretch out the glue. When the joint is closed back up again, the stretched out glue won't go back to its original shape, instead it will 'creep' out of the joint leaving a raised ridge of glue along the joint seam. Urea-formaldehyde doesn't stretch. It will crack if put under too much tension. Glue creep happens a lot with PVA glues, and even more so on PVA glues designed for external use given they are designed to be highly flexible when cured (stretchy).

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It basically just turn to dust when trim routing end grain. It happens with all timbers, but is very noticeable with darker timbers. A good example is to take a fine end grain shaving with a hand plane. The shaving comes out of the plane and looks like an actual shaving, but if you rub it between your hands, the "shaving" turns to dust because the timber fiber strands were only ~0.03mm long...

  • @eltoncrim3699
    @eltoncrim3699 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks fantastic. This may be a stupid question but Ive watched a couple of your videos and you seem to always have a template cut that helps with the cuts on each board. How do you develop the templates. Also, I'm wondering if you have an opinion on the sound quality or differences between a plywood plinth and a hard wood plinth. I ask because I made a L75 first build with hickory and it seems to store and transfer energy (low frequency). I've been told that Maple has more favorable resonances and a lot of tables are made using birch plywood. I'm planning to redo that table and I also have a Gerrard project to build. Thanks and beautiful work

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get asked this often enough. I would have shown how I make the templates in the video, but I made these templates a few years ago before I was making videos, and it seems silly and wasteful to make a new template for something I already have. In essence though, only the top template is critical because it will either have a smooth transition between timber and record player, or massive unsightly gaps. It's just a case of measuring out the record player very accurately and creating the template using those dimensions allowing some clearance space all the way around. You can draw the shape on a piece of mdf and then jigsaw away from the line, then refine the shape to the line with a file and sandpaper. For straight lines though, I generally setup a guide fence and use a plunge router. It takes a bit of time to make a template, but the time spent here ensures a quality product at the end. If you are unsure of your measuring skills, I would advise making a tracing template using cardboard and use that to make sure that it slips over the record player neatly. The cuts on cardboard can be made with scissors and don't require perfect straight lines or arcs, just good enough to confirm your measurements when you make a MDF template.
      As far as sound quality goes I don't know very much. I have been told that laminated layers of MDF is probably the best material to use but I didn't really understand the information being supplied to me. A little above my pay grade if you know what I mean. Nobody has asked me to build one from MDF, probably because MDF is considered cheap and nasty. I have made quite a few Garrard 401 and 301's from birch ply. The ply plinths seem to be well favoured.
      Thanks for watching mate.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a solid two days work to make one of these spread over a several days accounting for glue drying times and polyurethane curing times etc. The cost of the wood depends on species, but there is roughly 10 lineal meters of 150x38 rough sawn material. The client supplied the material for this plinth, I don't know what it cost him. I'd expect between $200-300 in timber dependant on species.

    Sorry, but with what did you said you use to glue the layers?

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Urea-formaldehyde glue. It is a 2 part glue which cures rock hard and doesn't creep over time unlike ordinary PVA glue. if I was to use an ordinary PVA glue, I would choose Titebond original because it creeps the least between TB original, TBII and TBIII

      @kuffyswoodwork  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Bongo. I have made plinths for the 401 before and have the jigs ready to go. It is somewhat similar to the 301, but the 401 is more square whereas the 301 widens from front to back. I am not taking on any substantial work for the next few months as I want to get a few personal projects completed which includes a rebuild of my master bedroom ensuite.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think blackwood inserts is what the end user ended up going with. Both looked good, but I think with the record player unit installed, it may have been a bit busy with jarrah inserts.

    Skillful work. Lots of wasted wood inside. With beautiful wood as costly as it is burying so much inside this block is disappointing. Use manufactured product inside which is more stable and sufficiently dense to provide an excellent turntable base. Add exterior solid wood for the beauty it offers.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't mind the way my client wanted this built with solid timber throughout. The Blackwood was decent quality stuff, but the Jarrah was pretty close to being downgraded all the way down to fire wood. It was full of checking and voids, which worked well for this project because it was mostly hidden.

      @@kuffyswoodworkGreat video and a job well done. Yeah, we buy petrol in litres but calculate distance in miles per gallon and speed in miles per hour. The Garrard 301 and 401 were manufactured when Britain was great and imperial. Oh and LP's are still refered to as 12" (that's inch in old money) what a strange world we live in😂
