I am in awe of Ella a singer and musician. Ella was in a class utterly by herself. Her intonation was flawless , she never, ever sang out-of-tune. Her phrasing and breath control were impeccable. She possessed a consistent and luminous vocal tone throughout her three plus octave voice. Her diction was perfecftion and her voice was always centred and never strained. One moment she could sing soft ballads with such tenderness and then scart sing sounding like an entire brass section. She sang without affectation, because she could. Ella's purity, clarity, flexibility, nuance and accuracy of her instrument allowed her to sing in different musical styles with total ease.
I was there - the very night I set foot on Copenhagen soil for the first time, and I fell in love with the town at first glance. I still live here, 51 years later.
You're a lucky girl dear Marianne ! I remember in 1987, I was a french tourist in NY and Ella was scheduled at Carnegie Hall, and of course it was sold out. Anyway, at this period, Ticketmaster didn't exist. Once, I was lucky, I am in the audience of my favorite piano player : Oscar Peterson 's record recorded live at Blue Note NY in March 1990. I was able to shake Oscar 's hand at the end of the concert. He signed me an autograph that I unfortunately lost ! All the best Gerard
To describe Ella would be like quoting a long list of superlatives that we see to often to describe singers... the difference is that with Ella they're all true.
Согласен с мнением DJ UVE, что даже через 100 лет, прошедших со дня ее рождения, Эллочка в исполнении джазовых стандартов не имеет себе равных до сих пор. Спасибо
There has not been been any better pianist for Ella than Tommy Flanagan and she had quite a few great ones. Her preoccupation with pop hits of the day caused him to leave her and luckily for us start his own trio.
