There's not really much going for Avatar 2, the visuals are great, yes. No denying that. But other than that and a couple good performances, the film feels more of the same with what came before with the first Avatar. I overheard someone at the cinema I work summarise the film.perfectly for me; "It was a 3 hour film that was 2 hours too long" The film just drags, the more I saw of it, the more I wondered why it was included beyond beautifuls visual effects. Puss in Boots on the other hand, barely passes an hour and a half in runtime, yet so much is told, so many characters are developed and ALL feel relevant to the story and most importantly, nothing feels wasted. It's a complete story with compelling characters in a very personal story, which felt more fulfilling than the, quite frankly, overhyped sequel to a 13 year old film.

@fishraposo7192 I didn't mean like that. The new characters he goes after would be the main characters. It can also be short movie. And unlike death from final destination, he wouldn't kill them in the most brutal way. It would most likely be a quick death. Like I said, these people are supposed to die, but since they didn't because one of them had a premonition. However, they're still pretty much on his death list, so he has to do his job. And like in puss, he could still have a short screen time.

I love the anger in his voice. He hates that cats have 9 lives but he doesn't have the power to change that. Meaning somewhere there is a being with equal power to death....the being that represents life.

I had never hear that explanation before but it truly fits. it also reminded me of the peverell tale from harry potter. where, when he got tired of living, Ignotus removed the invisibility cloack and welcomed death like an old friend. just one small detail I want to comment. what you welcome, with death, isn't the end. it's the begining of a new adventure.
The one thing I love about Death is his whistle. At the start the whistle is unsettling, and as the movie continues it sounds more haunting and terrifying as we starting fearing Death as Puss does, but at the end of the movie when Puss finally values his life and no longer shows any fear the whistle is no longer terrifying or haunting its soothing.
Heroes never fail until they do. The greeks wrote so fondly of this. Tragedies are full of heroes who as you say "laughs at the face of death until death laughs back".

My grandma is getting old, yesterday I witnessed her at her lowest point. She can’t walk, has trouble breathing, and is constantly shaking. An incredible fear came over me and I started to think “That’s what awaits me, it’s coming for me, and there’s nothing I can do” It was an eye opening experience.

I'd like to think, that while you might be at your strongest, when having lived a fulfilling live with people you love, death also loses some of its terror as some of it is you being confronted with your regrets and living a good fulfilling life tends to leave you with less regrets (ideally). Well is their perspective if they do it or don't they regret both, if the want to do something bad/cruel but fulfilled they life and feel never regret what they done, truth is subjective if they do completely the opposite of what you belief in well that fine if rich, fame, and honor is clearly what they live or don't have a loved one doesn't mean they are unfulfilled and unhappy people some of them are happy and see a every bad situation is a opportunity and regret doesn't change anything and sometime you do what you regret and Guilty later and you are human ur not perfect you have some regret even now, do some stupid stuff and sometimes hate pur loved ones, we are not perfect we just get better Day by day.

I love entities of death that respect and value life. Between Lobo and the Matron of Ravens from Vox Machina, it’s just such a fascinating and nuanced approach to death that doesn’t demonize it. Death should be acknowledged and respected, not feared. It’s not evil, it’s just the way of the universe.
Certainly far more nuanced than portraying death as a serial killer. I also think it's neat he broke his own rules, so what he did was evil, even by his standards. He even had a small temper tantrum at the fact he didn't get to kill a stupid feline who didn't value life. But then, he quickly got over it. Which, I feel, says a lot about death. He could have just as easily merc'd Puss right there, character development be damned. But he didn't~
Perfect timing I just bought the Blu-ray on Tuesday after watching the movie I had low expectations but now it's one of many of my favorite animated films of all time. I like how this movie has three villains one with understandable motives, one who is just doing his job and one who's evil and doesn't give a damn and doesn't want to be redeemed. This movie is a good example on what Disney needs to learn when it comes to it's villains.
Call me crazy but I’ve always imagine that Death always found the soul of a life with substance more taste full than a life wasted and preferred souls with actual flavour. Going by that logic I believe Death in the movie stalled for as long as he could to try to add some flavour to Puss’es soul after the last 8 left him with a bitter taste, only to realize that if he killed Puss at the wishing star he’d be robbing himself of a good meal.

@@davidlane1248 here is the fun thing. there's no satisfaction in killing puss. what Lobo did was scare Puss out of his arrogance and taunt him to recover his courage. Lobo is a mentor for Puss. it gives him a moral lesson about how to live our lives. neither the fearless nor the coward can live their lives.
this film was fantastic. beautiful animation and art direction, smart writing with a great balance between comedic timing and emotional maturity, and the antagonists are handled perfectly. as an adult watching this film I would argue the lesson of valuing the one life you have to live hits harder since you become conditioned to take so much for granted, but the movie is obviously still very much accessible to younger audiences as well.
I think part of what really adds depth to Death is one little line in the cave of lost souls, where one of the past lives of Puss claims that Death's "breaking the rules". And that past Puss is technically correct. Death's being far too proactive and personal, physically manifesting himself to fight the cat. He's literally breaking the rules of how he's supposed to work...but the instant he "doesn't see" the arrogant legend who thinks they're immortal, Death goes back to following the rules. Puss will die, and Death will be their to collect him...but he won't personally snuff the life out of someone who actually values it. That's breaking the rules.
Technically under the classic nature of how Death operates, he did not break the rules. You can cheat death, but only so many times. Death thought the idea of Puss seeing himself as immortal and living life doing nothing but cheating death, exploiting his extra lives as a cop out, warranted Puss's death purely on the grounds that he cheated him too many times, especially without respecting him. Godfather Death illustrates this well. Death's own godson cheated him; however he forgave him once on the condition that if he did it again, he would take his life. Upon the second violation, he fulfilled his threat-even though he agreed to be the boy's godfather. Death does not play favorites.
Puss's treatment of death at the start of the movie, his arrogance, reminds me of a fantastic line from Destiny 2: "You're not brave, you've merely forgotten the fear of death."
I think its more leaning onto the fact that everyone wants to control when they will die, and how they will die and not actually being immortal, immortality loses the real purpose of life, and living is a struggle, thats a fact, eventually boredom and tiredness will get to the immortal people and they will wish death... Because in all reality, if we have actually fulfilled our life goals, then we are willing to embrace death and not fear it, for death is peace after a long struggle...what makes people fear death is how unexpected and unpredictable it is, but if humans want anything they want to control when they will seize to exist and when they will finally rest, not to live for so long that it will be tiring not to mention boring.

I wonder though, if Death takes the form of a bounty hunting wolf being several things Puss is unconsciously afraid of, whether he realized it at all. It's something that as an outlaw, hero or not, would be something he'd always have to look over his shoulder for because he's wanted by a lot of people for his antics.

Puss basically personified the three brothers' lives from deathly hallows. When he had the nine lives, he felt mighty and invincible and lived recklessly as if nothing could take him down, like how the first brother was with the elder wand and went ahead disrespecting it. After his eight lives get depleted and he comes close to his brush with death, he spends the rest of the movie running away and trying to cheat death in any way possible-hiding away in a home, trying to get extra lives, whatever, etc. However, towards the end of the movie and probably in the end of his life, not only does death and puss depart on respectable terme, but the next time they meet they will greet each other at the end of a long life as friends, like the third brother.
I dont think death wanted teach puss a lesson about valueing life, seeing as he said (more or less) "why did I play with my food" after he realized that puss is no longer the arrogant hero that did not value his life and laughed in the face of death that he wanted to kill, he just gave up
He did not give up. The last interaction between Puss and Death was that of mutual respect. As Death sheathed his sickles, he gave a little bow, similar to Godzilla and Kong. He is Death, his nature is to kill, so he resents the fact that he failed, but he is also fair, seeing as Puss killed his own legend before the wolf could. And so, he left him to live with the last admonition to live his final life well, and with a reminder that they will see each other again, and Puss acknowledged the inevitability of it. I imagine when the time comes, they will not meet as adversaries.

Idk if anyone realized, but deaths whistle is the beginning to Ring Around The Rosey, which is a reference to the black death/plague that was probably going on at the time. It also is a nod to how death comes for all. Ashes to ashes, we all fall down
It doesn’t follow that tune and also that’s a false belief about the origin for ring around the Rosey because the words we use now to tie it into the plague weren’t even the original words and it’s probably just a nonsense song made to play what are generally called ring games
I like the part when you said that Death (the wolf) gives puss chances time and time again to change. It highlights the fact that in some stories our heroes progress or grow because of their villains.
I really loved this movie and I think it is one of the best dreamworks movies that have came out In a while, and I was really pleased with the direction they took the story, especially death. I think movies are meant to be fun and enjoyable of course but I was glad this one had a real underlining meaning and true moral to the story. Because it not only can teach us a valuable lesson but it also makes the story so much better, I mean I really liked the last movie but it was the same thing over and over, just a bunch of jokes playing off of classic fairy tales, and this movie had tons of gags based around fairy tales (jacks magical granny bag) but because they made the story around such a powerful subject it made the story and characters so much better. Puss being afraid of dying and learning the value of life made such a great character arch. Kitty learning to trust again. All of these aspects of the story came from puss fearing death.
What an incredible film. I was pretty busy these last couple of months to watch this movie, but I watched this video back when it released, putting this movie on my "To Watch List". and after being on a international flight watching it 4 times consecutively, I can truly appreciate its worth. The story, the journey, the humanity, the art, all of these fantastic qualities wrapped up in a brilliant rewatchable movie. And I probably would've ignored it if it weren't for this video. Thanks again Sage, your videos are pretty great. Keep it up
I can wax lyrical all day about the animation style... Apart from Jack Horner, who just looks like the embodiment of morbidity, the art style is "just right." But, for me, it's the story, the message... And, most of all, the way they wove the wolf into the story, at first, we see him as an obstacle for the protagonist, then an actual threat, then an impossible foe, and, finally, someone we end up respecting, along with the role he played in the character arc for Puss.
6:44 After most the animated movies I've seen, I have not seen anything as unsettling and creepy as this in a long time. They done such a magnificent job!
The funny thing comes to mind for Puss is this is his Shrek story, this is him finding the loved ones that his closest friend already found. He is like the last guy who is still searching when the answer is already in front of him. Donkey and Shrek honestly his brothers, have already accomplished so much. Part of me entertains the idea that Puss is in some way trying to live up to them by continuing the adventure even though its already done or at least the true reason for adventuring.
That is the thing. As long as you run, you always have something to fear. It is when you stop running... one way or another, you don't have to fear what you face.
So, an interesting thing I heard from a pal's old folk over here in his tribe that kinda fits though no idea how true it is if any have info about this - my friend awhile back we had a discussion about some tales and one of them noted about the idea of white wolves being seen as a nature spirit Sage. A spirit taking its form that helps one find their path or guides them. Whether intentional or not ( Probably more so to be the Pale Death instead) it works extremely well with El Lobos feeling about life. He just cant shake his habit of being a teacher as much as he enjoys the hunt - hence his frustration at playing with his food to much, losing the chance to slay the arrogant "Legend/Lie" Puss once was. lol
I had no idea he put coins in his eyes to represent that death!!!!! Holy crap I can't believe I missed that! I just thought it was like the lighting effect that usually happens on wolves eyes where it looks like they're glowing!!!
I find it interesting that when Puss went into hiding at Mama Luna’s home, it’s implied that a lot of time passed by, enough time for Puss to grow a long beard. During that time of security, Death never showed up. It would have been very easy for Death to find Puss and hunt him down at his most vulnerable. But why didn’t he do it? I believe that during that period of time, Puss was actually taking his ninth live seriously. If Puss had never left Mama Lunas’s safety, Death would have left him alone, because Puss had learned to fear and respect Death and value his last life. Death only comes back when Puss began to search for more lives, giving Death the confirmation that Puss hadn’t learned his lesson.
WOW truly awesome video!!! Gave me so much to think about and more reasons why I love this movie! The fact that Puss' eyes contrast Death's is so brilliant! Didn't realize that before! Also loooved the line that "everyone needs the hero but nobody knows who's under the mask." Awesome job!!
You can thank people living a lie in denial and being afraid of harsh reality for that. Which would be most people. Courage is rare, unfortunately. That's why Death had to reconsider in the end. He'll want to see the courage, and he knows fear is a good motivator when given direction.

When I watched this, I didnt see the wolf as a threat and even when he whistled I thought it was not that threatening but until he actually was close to killing boots and following him around through the journey, the whistle seemed to becomes more and more scarier.. idk it just seemed that way
If you don't want a super good scene ruined don't read further at around 9:47 when death mentions how apsurd it is to have 9 lifes, if you look carefully you can see his belt clipping through his cloak
Can you truly appreciate life, if you don’t fear death? Because with that fear you come to know gratitude for the time your given. I love this movie and it’s messages.
I feel like this misses the point of the movie. It's not about fearing death, just respecting it, and life with it. By disrespecting life's value, you disrespect death. By respecting the value of life, then you respect the importance of death. Spoilers: At the end Puss is no longer scared of death. If fearing death was the point of the movie, why would it end on the note of Puss no longer fearing death.
I hope one day you discuss about the Philosophy of Demon Slayer. Because that manga also brings the message of Keep Living no matter how cruel or hard it may be.

Puss in Boots 2 did such a better job explaining anxiety. When I saw Puss having a panic attack, I felt sad for him because I know how it feels. Your heart’s racing, you’re running out of breath, you can’t feel your body, and everything is just so painful! But then of course help is on the way. I know it may sound crazy…but there’s also another film that depicts anxiety very well in PAW Patrol: The Movie. Chase had a fair share of his anxiety of Adventure City. So, when they had to go there to stop Mayor Humdinger’s madness, when there was a Humdinger Hyperloop train coaster made and the passengers were trapped on there, Chase tried to save them, but realizing it was way too high, that’s when they depicted a panic attack VERY well! I’m not gonna lie, I love the movie and I felt very bad for Chase when he had that panic attack. Normally you’d think it would be a dog basically cowering in fear, but when you get reality distortion, sounds fading and a heartbeat speeding up frantically, that’s when Chase has that panic attack. There’s also another to name in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. In one of Rocket’s flashbacks, when he frees Lylla, the High Evolutionary blasts her dead with a blaster, Rocket is wailing over this, and Floor begins having a panic attack while yelling “ROCKET, TEEFS, FLOOR, GO NOW!!!” over and over again. That broke my heart. As somebody who sometimes has panic attacks, it’s safe to say Velma lost!

I love seeing the different interpretations of death. The inevitable unending merciless end. But I also love to humanize it as death the end and without end there is no meaning or purpose. Death is change and gives meaning without it everything would fester till it was nothing.
If there's something i've been told that i'll never forget its how social status and wealth is so big but so weightless at the same time. These things mean everything in life but even if you're as rich as elon musk you're still going to meet the very same fate as every other living being in this world We can make choices and shape our lives all we want but only while we're alive. we cannot choose to get put into the world, same goes for leaving it
It would have been a very hollow feeling of happiness, a mask to his fear, KNOWING that Death is out there, waiting for him to die another 8 times and would likely be even more angry the next time they met. Hel, I reckon it'd drive Puss insane, and when Death came for him, he was nothing more than a hollow, broken cat. The legend long since faded away, no-one seeing him as anything more than a feral stray who lost its way. I think at that point, Death would pity him.
It's a temporary solution to a long-term problem. What happens when Puss inevitably ends up on one life again? It's the *last* wish. It's just Puss running from his problems by pretending they don't exist. And after coming face to face with Death? I doubt Puss would be able to live such a lie.
“Pick it up……pick. It. Up.” One of the scariest moments in a movie that isn’t supposed to be scary. Mixed in the anxiety inducing music and the whistling just makes you fear him too. Even though he has a calming voice, it still feels in some way that he is dangerous. Perfect character and I hope they keep it up.
I enjoyed the movie and the depiction of Death racing Puss as a wolf as Dogs being enemy of cats was good and. I liked how Puss learn what it means to be a hero and the appreciation for life and to his friends are love ones was good.

Throughout my life, I faced death since I was born. From almost suffocating in doctor's offices, allergic reactions, and car accidents. Cant tell if its some cruel joke. Maybe one day, I'll be his bride. Everytime I've seen him, he was always wearing a tux.
I do wish people would stop calling Lobo a villain, he's not (Jack is THE villain, Goldie and Lobo are antagonists, not all opposing forces in a story are villainous). He's antagonistic yes, but he's not a/the villain. You explained it perfectly that he's just doing his job, but he's enjoying it because of Puss's attitude. He says it himself: "I'm Death, straight up." Death is neutral, but it doesn't mean he's not gonna take things personally if you disrespect him.

I love the anger in his voice. He hates that cats have 9 lives but he doesn't have the power to change that. Meaning somewhere there is a being with equal power to death....the being that represents life.

The one thing I love about Death is his whistle. At the start the whistle is unsettling, and as the movie continues it sounds more haunting and terrifying as we starting fearing Death as Puss does, but at the end of the movie when Puss finally values his life and no longer shows any fear the whistle is no longer terrifying or haunting its soothing.
Heroes never fail until they do. The greeks wrote so fondly of this. Tragedies are full of heroes who as you say "laughs at the face of death until death laughs back".

Puss in Boots has become one of my favorite animated movies next to Into The Spiderverse. It animation is lively and beautiful, and it has an amazing story.

My grandma is getting old, yesterday I witnessed her at her lowest point. She can’t walk, has trouble breathing, and is constantly shaking. An incredible fear came over me and I started to think “That’s what awaits me, it’s coming for me, and there’s nothing I can do” It was an eye opening experience.

I'd like to think, that while you might be at your strongest, when having lived a fulfilling live with people you love, death also loses some of its terror as some of it is you being confronted with your regrets and living a good fulfilling life tends to leave you with less regrets (ideally). Well is their perspective if they do it or don't they regret both, if the want to do something bad/cruel but fulfilled they life and feel never regret what they done, truth is subjective if they do completely the opposite of what you belief in well that fine if rich, fame, and honor is clearly what they live or don't have a loved one doesn't mean they are unfulfilled and unhappy people some of them are happy and see a every bad situation is a opportunity and regret doesn't change anything and sometime you do what you regret and Guilty later and you are human ur not perfect you have some regret even now, do some stupid stuff and sometimes hate pur loved ones, we are not perfect we just get better Day by day.

I love entities of death that respect and value life. Between Lobo and the Matron of Ravens from Vox Machina, it’s just such a fascinating and nuanced approach to death that doesn’t demonize it.
Death should be acknowledged and respected, not feared. It’s not evil, it’s just the way of the universe.
Certainly far more nuanced than portraying death as a serial killer. I also think it's neat he broke his own rules, so what he did was evil, even by his standards.
He even had a small temper tantrum at the fact he didn't get to kill a stupid feline who didn't value life. But then, he quickly got over it. Which, I feel, says a lot about death. He could have just as easily merc'd Puss right there, character development be damned. But he didn't~

Perfect timing I just bought the Blu-ray on Tuesday after watching the movie I had low expectations but now it's one of many of my favorite animated films of all time. I like how this movie has three villains one with understandable motives, one who is just doing his job and one who's evil and doesn't give a damn and doesn't want to be redeemed. This movie is a good example on what Disney needs to learn when it comes to it's villains.
Call me crazy but I’ve always imagine that Death always found the soul of a life with substance more taste full than a life wasted and preferred souls with actual flavour.
Going by that logic I believe Death in the movie stalled for as long as he could to try to add some flavour to Puss’es soul after the last 8 left him with a bitter taste, only to realize that if he killed Puss at the wishing star he’d be robbing himself of a good meal.

@@davidlane1248 here is the fun thing. there's no satisfaction in killing puss. what Lobo did was scare Puss out of his arrogance and taunt him to recover his courage.
Lobo is a mentor for Puss. it gives him a moral lesson about how to live our lives. neither the fearless nor the coward can live their lives.
this film was fantastic. beautiful animation and art direction, smart writing with a great balance between comedic timing and emotional maturity, and the antagonists are handled perfectly. as an adult watching this film I would argue the lesson of valuing the one life you have to live hits harder since you become conditioned to take so much for granted, but the movie is obviously still very much accessible to younger audiences as well.
Not all heros wear capes, but all of them need an assistance or help sometimes from the people around them.
I think part of what really adds depth to Death is one little line in the cave of lost souls, where one of the past lives of Puss claims that Death's "breaking the rules". And that past Puss is technically correct. Death's being far too proactive and personal, physically manifesting himself to fight the cat. He's literally breaking the rules of how he's supposed to work...but the instant he "doesn't see" the arrogant legend who thinks they're immortal, Death goes back to following the rules. Puss will die, and Death will be their to collect him...but he won't personally snuff the life out of someone who actually values it. That's breaking the rules.
Technically under the classic nature of how Death operates, he did not break the rules. You can cheat death, but only so many times. Death thought the idea of Puss seeing himself as immortal and living life doing nothing but cheating death, exploiting his extra lives as a cop out, warranted Puss's death purely on the grounds that he cheated him too many times, especially without respecting him.
Godfather Death illustrates this well. Death's own godson cheated him; however he forgave him once on the condition that if he did it again, he would take his life. Upon the second violation, he fulfilled his threat-even though he agreed to be the boy's godfather. Death does not play favorites.
I think that's a trope called Orange and Blue Morality.
Puss's treatment of death at the start of the movie, his arrogance, reminds me of a fantastic line from Destiny 2: "You're not brave, you've merely forgotten the fear of death."

I think its more leaning onto the fact that everyone wants to control when they will die, and how they will die and not actually being immortal, immortality loses the real purpose of life, and living is a struggle, thats a fact, eventually boredom and tiredness will get to the immortal people and they will wish death... Because in all reality, if we have actually fulfilled our life goals, then we are willing to embrace death and not fear it, for death is peace after a long struggle...what makes people fear death is how unexpected and unpredictable it is, but if humans want anything they want to control when they will seize to exist and when they will finally rest, not to live for so long that it will be tiring not to mention boring.

Death is easily one of the slickest dogs I've seen in a while
I wonder though, if Death takes the form of a bounty hunting wolf being several things Puss is unconsciously afraid of, whether he realized it at all. It's something that as an outlaw, hero or not, would be something he'd always have to look over his shoulder for because he's wanted by a lot of people for his antics.

Puss basically personified the three brothers' lives from deathly hallows.
When he had the nine lives, he felt mighty and invincible and lived recklessly as if nothing could take him down, like how the first brother was with the elder wand and went ahead disrespecting it.
After his eight lives get depleted and he comes close to his brush with death, he spends the rest of the movie running away and trying to cheat death in any way possible-hiding away in a home, trying to get extra lives, whatever, etc.
However, towards the end of the movie and probably in the end of his life, not only does death and puss depart on respectable terme, but the next time they meet they will greet each other at the end of a long life as friends, like the third brother.

I dont think death wanted teach puss a lesson about valueing life, seeing as he said (more or less) "why did I play with my food" after he realized that puss is no longer the arrogant hero that did not value his life and laughed in the face of death that he wanted to kill, he just gave up
Cats are known to play with their food, wolves tend to "wolf their food down" so Death / Lobo was just giving Puss a hard time !
He did not give up. The last interaction between Puss and Death was that of mutual respect. As Death sheathed his sickles, he gave a little bow, similar to Godzilla and Kong. He is Death, his nature is to kill, so he resents the fact that he failed, but he is also fair, seeing as Puss killed his own legend before the wolf could. And so, he left him to live with the last admonition to live his final life well, and with a reminder that they will see each other again, and Puss acknowledged the inevitability of it. I imagine when the time comes, they will not meet as adversaries.

Idk if anyone realized, but deaths whistle is the beginning to Ring Around The Rosey, which is a reference to the black death/plague that was probably going on at the time. It also is a nod to how death comes for all. Ashes to ashes, we all fall down

I like the part when you said that Death (the wolf) gives puss chances time and time again to change. It highlights the fact that in some stories our heroes progress or grow because of their villains.
I really loved this movie and I think it is one of the best dreamworks movies that have came out In a while, and I was really pleased with the direction they took the story, especially death. I think movies are meant to be fun and enjoyable of course but I was glad this one had a real underlining meaning and true moral to the story. Because it not only can teach us a valuable lesson but it also makes the story so much better, I mean I really liked the last movie but it was the same thing over and over, just a bunch of jokes playing off of classic fairy tales, and this movie had tons of gags based around fairy tales (jacks magical granny bag) but because they made the story around such a powerful subject it made the story and characters so much better. Puss being afraid of dying and learning the value of life made such a great character arch. Kitty learning to trust again. All of these aspects of the story came from puss fearing death.

What an incredible film. I was pretty busy these last couple of months to watch this movie, but I watched this video back when it released, putting this movie on my "To Watch List". and after being on a international flight watching it 4 times consecutively, I can truly appreciate its worth. The story, the journey, the humanity, the art, all of these fantastic qualities wrapped up in a brilliant rewatchable movie. And I probably would've ignored it if it weren't for this video. Thanks again Sage, your videos are pretty great. Keep it up
I can wax lyrical all day about the animation style... Apart from Jack Horner, who just looks like the embodiment of morbidity, the art style is "just right."
But, for me, it's the story, the message... And, most of all, the way they wove the wolf into the story, at first, we see him as an obstacle for the protagonist, then an actual threat, then an impossible foe, and, finally, someone we end up respecting, along with the role he played in the character arc for Puss.
I love that Death is a complex villain

The funny thing comes to mind for Puss is this is his Shrek story, this is him finding the loved ones that his closest friend already found. He is like the last guy who is still searching when the answer is already in front of him. Donkey and Shrek honestly his brothers, have already accomplished so much. Part of me entertains the idea that Puss is in some way trying to live up to them by continuing the adventure even though its already done or at least the true reason for adventuring.

So, an interesting thing I heard from a pal's old folk over here in his tribe that kinda fits though no idea how true it is if any have info about this - my friend awhile back we had a discussion about some tales and one of them noted about the idea of white wolves being seen as a nature spirit Sage. A spirit taking its form that helps one find their path or guides them.
Whether intentional or not ( Probably more so to be the Pale Death instead) it works extremely well with El Lobos feeling about life. He just cant shake his habit of being a teacher as much as he enjoys the hunt - hence his frustration at playing with his food to much, losing the chance to slay the arrogant "Legend/Lie" Puss once was. lol

I find it interesting that when Puss went into hiding at Mama Luna’s home, it’s implied that a lot of time passed by, enough time for Puss to grow a long beard. During that time of security, Death never showed up. It would have been very easy for Death to find Puss and hunt him down at his most vulnerable. But why didn’t he do it? I believe that during that period of time, Puss was actually taking his ninth live seriously. If Puss had never left Mama Lunas’s safety, Death would have left him alone, because Puss had learned to fear and respect Death and value his last life. Death only comes back when Puss began to search for more lives, giving Death the confirmation that Puss hadn’t learned his lesson.

When I watched this, I didnt see the wolf as a threat and even when he whistled I thought it was not that threatening but until he actually was close to killing boots and following him around through the journey, the whistle seemed to becomes more and more scarier.. idk it just seemed that way

I love "Death" characters when they are done well.
Can you truly appreciate life, if you don’t fear death? Because with that fear you come to know gratitude for the time your given. I love this movie and it’s messages.
I feel like this misses the point of the movie. It's not about fearing death, just respecting it, and life with it. By disrespecting life's value, you disrespect death. By respecting the value of life, then you respect the importance of death.
Spoilers:
At the end Puss is no longer scared of death. If fearing death was the point of the movie, why would it end on the note of Puss no longer fearing death.
I hope one day you discuss about the Philosophy of Demon Slayer. Because that manga also brings the message of Keep Living no matter how cruel or hard it may be.
*When a sequel to a spinoff that wasn't very famous has me considering life and existence and love and the story for weeks after watching it in contrast to a lot of big budget films these days*
Puss in Boots 2 did such a better job explaining anxiety. When I saw Puss having a panic attack, I felt sad for him because I know how it feels. Your heart’s racing, you’re running out of breath, you can’t feel your body, and everything is just so painful! But then of course help is on the way.
I know it may sound crazy…but there’s also another film that depicts anxiety very well in PAW Patrol: The Movie. Chase had a fair share of his anxiety of Adventure City. So, when they had to go there to stop Mayor Humdinger’s madness, when there was a Humdinger Hyperloop train coaster made and the passengers were trapped on there, Chase tried to save them, but realizing it was way too high, that’s when they depicted a panic attack VERY well! I’m not gonna lie, I love the movie and I felt very bad for Chase when he had that panic attack. Normally you’d think it would be a dog basically cowering in fear, but when you get reality distortion, sounds fading and a heartbeat speeding up frantically, that’s when Chase has that panic attack.
There’s also another to name in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. In one of Rocket’s flashbacks, when he frees Lylla, the High Evolutionary blasts her dead with a blaster, Rocket is wailing over this, and Floor begins having a panic attack while yelling “ROCKET, TEEFS, FLOOR, GO NOW!!!” over and over again. That broke my heart.
As somebody who sometimes has panic attacks, it’s safe to say Velma lost!
The word “Death” reminds us to cherish every moment in life, for in the end, it is the memories we create that truly live on.
And just like the Third brother, he will be able to greet Death as an old friend at their last reunion.

I love seeing the different interpretations of death. The inevitable unending merciless end. But I also love to humanize it as death the end and without end there is no meaning or purpose. Death is change and gives meaning without it everything would fester till it was nothing.
After writing this realized that I was describing the themes of Soulsborne games and that makes me appreciate them more!

It would have been a very hollow feeling of happiness, a mask to his fear, KNOWING that Death is out there, waiting for him to die another 8 times and would likely be even more angry the next time they met.
Hel, I reckon it'd drive Puss insane, and when Death came for him, he was nothing more than a hollow, broken cat. The legend long since faded away, no-one seeing him as anything more than a feral stray who lost its way.
I think at that point, Death would pity him.
It's a temporary solution to a long-term problem. What happens when Puss inevitably ends up on one life again? It's the *last* wish. It's just Puss running from his problems by pretending they don't exist. And after coming face to face with Death? I doubt Puss would be able to live such a lie.

“Pick it up……pick. It. Up.” One of the scariest moments in a movie that isn’t supposed to be scary. Mixed in the anxiety inducing music and the whistling just makes you fear him too. Even though he has a calming voice, it still feels in some way that he is dangerous. Perfect character and I hope they keep it up.

Throughout my life, I faced death since I was born. From almost suffocating in doctor's offices, allergic reactions, and car accidents. Cant tell if its some cruel joke.

I do wish people would stop calling Lobo a villain, he's not (Jack is THE villain, Goldie and Lobo are antagonists, not all opposing forces in a story are villainous). He's antagonistic yes, but he's not a/the villain. You explained it perfectly that he's just doing his job, but he's enjoying it because of Puss's attitude. He says it himself: "I'm Death, straight up." Death is neutral, but it doesn't mean he's not gonna take things personally if you disrespect him.
