want to specify one thing, this is mostly in after effects that you need to manually do proxys. In other software it is kinda automatic and you don't really need to anything, this is usually know as instant playback speed which after effects has but you need to manually do it
hey i was wondering what were the pros and cons of doing this versus convert to prores. a lot of people suggest prores 422 mov but I've barely heard people talk about this proxy option
@@orionionion Proxy is used under the process of editing in order to store data. Prores 422 is a codec. Prores is codec so we can make a proxy file withe the codec of prores.
@@orionionionthe proxy file is a lower resolution copy of the original clip to speed up your workflow. ProRes would just be the original resolution with a slower read time since it’s pretty much lossless

yeah but I have streamed working on this so it is whatever but good crazy that not a lot of people are using it so is more to spread the information around
Should i delete the avi file when im done with the edit so it wont take up space kinda like how cache works where you gotta clear it every once in a while
you should use mov format instead of avi, after effects works most correctly and as fast as possible with it same goes for original media, don't use mp4 or mkv at all
@@Funsuiken ture but that also depends how fast you want the proxy to cahce in the information since avi is the fastest when it comes to quality but if you have less storage you can get away with mov but then you still need quicktime or any encoder that can read it the correct way otherwise the mov won't make much diffrenece
@@Curry10010 wouldn't the quality of the proxy not matter anyways if its not in the final render, isn't the whole point to make the playback smoother?. I mean im assuming most people already use half/quarter for viewing their playback, so I mean losing a couple of pixels in the proxy in exchange for less storage seems more like a better option to me personally unless you have a lot of storage to use.
Would do mov if you don't have a lot of storage and avi for better and less compressed quality. When you are done with the pf and you have it rendered out you can delete the proxy
it's more effective, since you can make changes afterwards. And techincally it is pre rendering but you just don't need to slap the file in the comp so it even saves you time
Basically if you are on a trashy pc this makes sure your effects are saved into the a file So since its saved it does not have to be loaded as much and cause your pc to crash since it just saves it then applies it to your comp This also means you can even run it on full since it’s engraved into the file and it goes smooth Uhh so I’d say it’s a fancy way of saving things and making your process smoother and less laggy
@ not really, generally it is saving your cache. Since after effects is a compositors it saves the data in a chace since it is a lot of powerful effects that takes more power it needs to clear this data every now and then. But with proxys we can save this data and not burn our cpu/gpu (depending on what you have in settings). So it is for all pcs generally since we wanna work efficiently and not sit there for 10 min looking at cache collecting instead we can just instantly work and not waste time. Like said on my pin comment, usual editing software and other compositing software have this but since after effects is a layer compositor it works differently for sum unknown reason .

does that mean I can make my entire edit comp a proxy and then render it again when I'm done? does it make the rendering process faster?
