For dinner tonight, I had blackened redfish, with a side of reddened blackfish.

I'm a Louisiana resident and Redfish are my favorite species to target. Thanks for taking the time to highlight the issues going on in Louisiana. Our biologists are trying to protect our resource and correct slot and creel limits. Hopefully our legislators stay out of the way for once and listen to the scientists instead of the industries.

All excellent points. How about some commentary on the commercial netting on the Chesapeake? I figure you might now a little about that, too.

THANK YOU! For addressing the bow fishing. I can’t remember the last red I caught that didn’t have a bow fishing scar down it’s side.

I spent some time early in my flying career spotting menhaden for commercial fishing boats in Louisiana. Go, this was back in the mid-1970s. 1500 hrs of flying around in a 172. I was 20. The funny thing was I was driving home from a failed job interview and stopped to eat, and well, there was a little airport across the street with a bunch of 172s parked. So I went over to see if it might be a job. The fellow took my resume, we chatted for a bit, and said this is a good phone number I said yes, sir. Ok, I will keep it on file, and if something comes up, we will call you; I left some references and continued on my way- a couple of months went by, and he called and said he needed a pilot because a fellow left on really short notice. I was on the road the same day and stayed a year. Good Job, but overfishing is never a good thing. As for Chief Paul, what can you say about him? I ate at his restaurant a number of times back in the day. Blackened Red Fish Gee's it's so good. But fly casting to them is much better.

Great timing Ben. Headed to IRL for warmer weather and pups this week. Hope to learn what the Floridians have to say about the pressures facing their populations.

Ben, great video. Thanks for highlighting a lot of the issues our fishery in Louisiana is facing, but no hatchery fish /stocking isn’t the answer.

Great video! I would love to see one about striped bass. We are experiencing a similar decline in our fishery here in New England due to commercial herring fishing and other factors.

Stiped Bass would be interesting. The different populations of them along the US NE coast and into the Southern Gulf of St Lawerence in Canada have experienced (are experiencing?) some very different trajectories in population numbers. Stripers went from approx 5000 fish in the SG, in the late 1990’s to am estimated 1.5million fish in late 20-teens. Great recovery for one species totally threatening another, Atlantic Salmon. Would be interesting to hear your take on it Ben. Stay huge!

Your buddy forgot a couple other reasons why redfish are the perfect flyrod fish. Croaking when you’re holding them in the boat. I find that quality endearing… But never, never put your hand down in that crusher…

Interesting about shooting redfish with a bow, flounder are in the “same boat” so to speak. Gigging flounder is a very popular way to harvest them. Of course you have to be able to tell a 14” one from a 13” one (which is damn near impossible from above the water). 14” is the minimum size. And with 3 holes in its back it is not a good candidate for C&R. Great videos, keep ’em comin’

Keeping it nerdy with the slot limit and pushing the conservation info further.
May I suggest fish facting about the motivations around slot limits? For example, slot limit of striped bass in my area is directly linked to their spawning maturity and productivity.
Stripers reach spawning maturity at around 7 years old. I think that would be facts to share if the research work is not an issue.

I liked this video. Informative but not preachy. Different than the few Vids I have watched over a couple of years most of which I found to be meh and sometimes corny. I’ll try a few more (saltwater) efforts soon. My health keeps me at sea level.
I will say that I watched a Chile short and the host is an able caster!

Hatcheries and stocking are never the answer for maintaining populations in the wild. Deal with the root cause whether it's habitat loss, overharvest, or menhaden mining.
