@@jbethjs just make sure if you do do something that has an effect here. To make it a positive one. This is where all the costs of American living come to roost. All the factories, pollution, dump sites, chemical dumps, radiation waste containment wells. They are all the remnants of the costs this city paid to help keep America on top. From WW1 weapon manufacturing, to the first atom bombs, to the first jets to break the sound barrier. You can thank Buffalo. The steel inside many of the buildings that make many skylines came from Bethelhem steel. This city was responsible for feeding most of America west of Lake Erie with all the grain elevators. Now we have a cesspool of dilapidated infrastructure and a bunch of beurocrats and their embrogilo they profess while they figure out the margins in between and how to capitalize on them.
I will be honest, if they had completed the entire subway system citywide instead of just Main Street this city would be a baby NYC. I will log off now because I will be attacked for this***
You’re not wrong. But I guess it’s part of Buffalo’s “Underdog Charm” that the subway wreaked so much havoc on Main St businesses for so many years, & only had a lil five mile subway to show for it in the end ! Itz SO Buffalo tho, isn’t it? ! That said, I use the subway. It’s still useful.
No you wouldn't because I said this when they did it. It was my first year of college and saw right before my eyes Buffalo's downtown disappear! To build a trolly that went know where! SMH
As a former New Yorker that went to Buffalo State University in the 1980s and have returned to visit in 2021 and 2022 I have to say I was delighted with the changes. We did the U2 Reunion Tour there and the water front. I'm a casino guy and loved the casino downtown. Elmwood Village which for me was Elmwood Ave closer to the college. Love the expansion of places like Panos (the original was so tiny). Great microbreweries around and much more restaurants. I will say that Buffalo always had great bars and food even 35+ years ago. Still has that warm feeling to it for wine and dine or beer. Yes.
I grew up in Buffalo. Another thing you can add. The overall quality of the Public Schools. New York State consistently rates in the top 10 overall for school quality. The New York Regents systems is amazing. I teach and live in Michigan and we have nothing comparable. (Michigan ranks in the bottom 1/2 of public education). I went to Cheektowaga and Williamsville Public Schools and received a 1st class education.
I literally have been to buffalo 4 times… I literally live in Albany… let’s face it all upstate cities are hurting…. Albany and Buffalo Rochester Syracuse etc etc were all beautiful thriving functioning cities at one point… now?? Not so much…. The death of the American city is probably the saddest thing to happen to this nation over the past 50-150 years. Agree the architecture is top notch….Albany has so beautiful street scapes.. parks etc…. But for a variety of reasons they are essentially dead places and likely never coming back….i just watched a TH-cam story about Hiroshima…. Mind boggling the differences… ps… there wasn’t one active human being in any of your street scenes… not one….Albany no different
Buffalo, where 10% of the streets have striping, the bridges are deteriorated, the leadership is corrupt and the segregation is striking. For many outsiders, especially those who have already f'd up the places that used to be affordable and cool, buffalo seems like an oasis of cheap housing and great art. The artists are what makes the town special,,the dime a dozen mediocre hipster/yupsters are as ordinary as any strip mall in the US, you can and them drinking beer at any of the usual spot for that kind of crowd. Ask black people on the Eastside what they love about Buffalo, the community that a gunman traveled several hours to target the most "black" and segregated zip code to murder people while shopping.. We have a sound pro-Palestine movement, lots of great Yemeni bodegas, Halal supermarkets and these are the true entrepreneurs keeping Buffalo going block by block. It's a great place for artisanal gentrifiers to start a shop that wouldn't d very well in a more developed city. Buffalo is desperate.
