the comics show both her actually mentally unstable side as well as her human flaws and caring side so when seeing those parts of her represented it made me realize she wasn't a villain and more of an anti-hero/morally grey character. it's why as someone who liked Harley years before the 2016 Suicide Squad and her show, I thought it was neat seeing her end up in the anti-hero path later on in the show. the show captures certain parts of her character better than 2016 Suicide Squad did and WAY better than how everyone's being represented in Velma. I'm so glad to have seen your comment and agree with you.
What baffles me is how Mindy is also behind the show Never Have I Ever. Never Have I Ever could've fixed and improved on certain aspects yet it still remains a show that includes likeable characters, not everything being black and white, funny moments, representation of several topics, a storyline where the main character still has more to her personality and not just 100% trauma, and opportunities for the audience to have all kinds of thoughts and differing opinions on the characters which is more thought-provoking than Velma. How did Mindy contribute to Never Have I Ever yet also contribute to the dumpster fire that is Velma?!? It's as if Mindy is an entirely different person in each show.

In Gumball, when they would make jokes about modern topics in different episodes (ie shipping culture in “The Shippening” or JRPGs and Gaming culture in “The Console”) it never felt like they were just pointing out clichés just for the hell of it, but were actually just poking fun at them without actually trying to insult its audience.

She's mean/abusive to everyone, believes nothing is ever her fault, and takes the ones close to her for granted to the point that she gets upset when they don't do what she wants when she wants. Even when certain characters like Norville or Daphne try to cut ties with her, she ends up winning them back with little to no effort on her part, thus depriving her of having to learn any real lesson or bother to improve herself. It doesn't really try to make them sympathetic and it doesn't rely on you wanting them to succeed. For those who don't know what that means, essentially, its when a show, episode, movie, ect. says the protagonist is in the right, simply because they're the protagonist. Another good example of the same issue is in a lot of post-movie episodes of Spongebob, where Spongebob did some pretty horrible things, yet the show said he was in the right, because he's the protagonist.

I think the writers know that Velma is not the best person. In the episode where Velma tried to humiliate Daphne in front of the whole school, she was called out for being wrong. However, the level of writing has the depths of a kiddie pool. We don't see what fuels Velma's behavior. We don't see why she'll demean, manipulate, or insult anyone (regardless of if they're friends or foes). She treats her only friend Norville like garbage, and we don't get any explanation as to why. The season finale made it clear that Velma was treating Norville wrong, but we get no resolution to their conflict and no introspection as to why she treated him this way.
Sarcastic Chorus said it best, Velma is Rick and Morty combined, only with their worst habits and tendencies and none of the charm.

@@ThatGuy-jj3kz i think the problem is that she doesn't really suffer much for her actions. Like that episode you mentioned about Daphne, she didn't really do anything to earn the apology. Instead of doing things to earn her apology, she just gets it. In fact, she even asked for one back. Episode 4 where the girls confront her and say her views on feminity is even more restricted than hers, the real lesson she should have learned is not to be quick at judging people and that there is more to them than their exterior. Instead she learns a lesson like every girl, including herself, is beautiful in their own way. It is apparent because she does judge people quickly even after episode 4. In episode 7, where she dresses as a man, instead of her learning that men also have problems, she was just proven right that men are entitled and privileged. Even the last episode where she and Norville were seperated, you could have a heartfelt scene with Norville and Velma before he leaves for school. Instead, she just says i love you by voicemail and he suddenly comes to help her.Even the moment where Fred's mom died, every other character is depressed except Mindy who was twerking while covered in her blood. How can anyone even be friends with her when she does that? The problem is that, the show acknowledges that she has flaws, but never really improves her . In fact, she either gets what she wants or she is right. If you watch anime and abridged series, there is a video series on youtube called sao abridged, that did an amazing job with a flawed protagonist. Hell, it's always Sunny is the best example of a show about a**holes. It works because the show acknowledges them as a**holes and they do suffer.

    • @ThatGuy-jj3kz
      @ThatGuy-jj3kz ปีที่แล้ว +20

@@lookingforlove839 I agree. Every time Velma (the character) "learns" a lesson or apologizes to her friends, the show resets her character, and she goes on to be a b*tch again. It makes me feel like her attempts to be "sincere" are hollow at best and manipulative at worst when she goes back into a-hole mode to everyone again. I believe the show "tried" to explain her reason for being a bitch to the entire town because no one cared about finding her mom. She internalized that to believe she was right and everyone was wrong. The show never confronts this, and even as the season ends, she continues to be an *ss to everyone. She's given every opportunity to demean everyone but never once allowed her soft side (if she has one) to round out her edginess. She's the pizza cutter meme (all edge, but no point).
I believe the writers wanted to be like Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park, and Rick and Morty, where groups of characters are mean to each other. There are many reasons why Scooby-Doo does NOT mix with adult animation humor. Still, the main reason why the show doesn't gel with the adult genre is the characterization, and you can't do standalone episodes and a serialized season simultaneously.
However, what makes the show more mind-boggling is Velma's arc flips like a revolving door, but the other characters are allowed to grow.
Norville: Started as a simp and beta male (in the show's own words) but learns to respect himself and know when to stand up for himself.
Daphne: Started off as a generic mean girl and has family issues but goes on to learn that popularity isn't everything and has a deeper bond with her moms.
Fred: Started off as a boy who needed his mommy and was seen as weak because he wasn't a man like his father. However, he becomes somewhat mature and no longer lives under his parents' shadows for success.
Am I saying that these arcs were done well? No, but it shows the writers had a basic understanding of character arcs, and it blows my mind that Velma wasn't given a personal arc that wasn't just "I need to find my mom".
Obviously, I'm putting way more thought into the show than the creators.

6:58 The part about “missing white girl syndrome” and how Velma is right to call the crowd out rubs me the wrong way for a few reasons-

I think it depends on the person and situation tbh. I'm definitely the type of person who dresses nice on a day to day basis and likes to wear fun makeup for special events, but I'm doing this because I enjoy looking nice- if I'm not dressed as well one day I'll feel a little crummy- I enjoy looking in the mirror and feeling put together and cute/cool depending on the look I'm going for.
However, I do think some people do feel pressured to dress differently or wear makeup, it all depends on personal preference and situation. I guess I think it's bad to go too far in either direction. Don't tell people they have to dress really well or wear makeup all the time, but don't tell people they can't do that either- just tell people to be themselves, whatever that means to them.

As a black girl, I am so upset and embarrassed that animators (especially in hollywood) and directors continue to change main characters to either different races of color or black in order to perpetuate some kind of political message. It is honestly concerning, and it makes me feel worse about myself as it seems as though they don't believe original black characters are worth marketing.
It's always changing (mainly) white characters into black characters, and then making them extremely subversive, as well as very political. Honestly this show is horrible, but it's made worse knowing that this trend will likely never change.
I really wish they would stop using race as a catalyst for their politics. Instead, can't we get original shows with these kinds of diverse characters WITHOUT focusing on race so hard? It's kind of cringey and has honestly stopped making me explore new media and movies anymore. If a character is originally white then keep them that way. They wouldn't do the reverse for a character of color because then they would be called racist, but it's okay the other way around? Let's stop the hypocrisy and bring cartoons and shows back to what they were before; entertainment and stories, not political ads. Add diversity with originality!... Not copy and pasted stories :(
(Btw I realize that this element is not the main subject of the topic but it is one thing that jumped out at me from the beginning because of my own personal feelings.)

I don’t think changing a characters race is “political”, is it true that some companies might market certain actors of a minority race in order to get more money/viewership yes.
If the character race swap changed nothing about the character it shouldn’t matter, many people will say that certain groups should make their own stories but they usually get overshadowed. And the company seems to have no interest in marketing them.
When a show written badly and has a certain demographic main character it’s considered political instead of bad writing.
Also I believe the creator is conservative from her twitter feed and more than likely assumed that younger demographic would watch it if she put in these type of jokes.

In my opinion, no terrible reboot angers me more than Fate the Winx Saga. For starters, because at least most people know what franchises like Scooby Doo, Fantastic Four, Avatar the Last Airbender, The Powerpuff Girls, classic Disney movies and even Thundercats are and not what their reboots make them out to be. Not enough people know what Winx Club is because of either generational divide, people, usually adults, dismissing animation as a genre for kids, Western casual viewers not knowing which English dubs to choose from with most of them not being 100% accurate, Nickelodeon rebooting it as a badly written preschool show (even rerunning it on effing Nick Jr.) and now this show, presenting it to Western casual viewers as a badly written teen drama!
For other reasons, not only does it whitewash two of its' characters, it's also borderline racist, fatphobic, biphobic, has terrible LGBT rep, terrible special effects, terrible fashion and is just uncreative at everything they do. Most of the characters are either a-holes or harmful stereotypes or even both. And I hate the excuse that if I separate the show from the source material, that'll I actually like it. If I have to do that, then that's how you know how much it failed as an adaptation.
I'll admit I feel bad for the casual fanbase since this show became yet another cancelhanger victim (cancelled on a cliffhanger) but besides them and other crew members who were just doing their job regardless of what show they're making, I feel no sympathy for no one.
If anything good came out of it, is that introduced the Western casual fans to the REAL Winx Club with the Rai English aka Cinelume dub or both Rai English dub and 4Kids dub since both have some great qualities.

    • @ChasehaWing

It's ok, you don't have to worry about that. It's impossible that this is the first iteration that anyone has ever seen.
Every adult has seen scooby doo, if not the original than one of it's many reboots/ variations that come out every year. Not to mention the original series is always being played on some kid's network or during a retro period or advertised in Halloween. Scooby Doo is a cross generational cultural icon who, even if you don't like the show or it's concept, you know about it. You hear other kids talk about it. This Dog and his meddling kids were impossible to miss.
And further more, this show is specifically for adults. It has a higher rating, which means most kids will not be allowed to watch it. The most accidental thing that could happen is a kid sees one episode accidentally, they (or more likely their parents) turn it off because it's trash, than when they watch any real version of Scooby Doo, they don't even recognize that they were the same characters because their entire look, group dynamic and personalities have been changed.
And if you are an adult and this is SOMEHOW the first time coming across the Scooby Doo franchise, you'll learn quickly that this some reboot due to all the back lash this got, and hundreds of millions of people can point you to a better version. Because there is literally nothing worse than this.

She faces no internal consequences for her actions, she jumped to the conclusion that fred was the killer got him shot in the legs and nothing comes of it, she's not even sorry. Finding her mom is supposed to make her sympathetic but even when she realizes she's an awful person, to her mom, to her parents, to her friends, to even the social circles she's a part of she doesn't stop being awful, because of this her making a point about her mom being missing and no one cares comes off as whiny. the moments of "character growth" are almost always dropped by the next set of episodes. Fred was shot in the legs and yet he's fine he's walking as if nothing happened. Velma realizes she needs norville only to insult him and be mean to him at every turn.

Also It's occasionally shown/ mentioned that Rick downright hates himself because he recognizes that as a person he is very flawed but doesn't know (or sometimes can't be bothered) to improve himself. By contrast Mindy Velma is convinced that she is God's gift to the world and that there could never be anything wrong with herself despite all her obvious crap that we, the audience, and even the characters in the show themselves can plainly see.

Never been here so earlier so i'm still watching this video as i'm typing but I got to say after finishing Velma, I just hate how (spoiler I guess if anyone actually want to look at the ending) that literally everyone gets a shitty ending (Daphne loses her popularity, Fred loses his mom and his mom is the bad guy, And Shaggy/Norville gets PTSD for killing Fred's mom) while Velma basically gets credited for being a great detective, and even her relationships with everyone only slightly mad at her like she isn't really abusive towards them, gets her mom back, and over-all has a "good" ending. From my understanding, I thought she was supposed to grow as a character? But handing her victory and barely calling her out for her bullshit and a last-ditch effort to make it seems like she "cares" for Shaggy/Norville is non-sensical to me and very poorly written
I don't even care that she was supposed to be an asshole character, I care that like many characters of this archetype, just ends up failing to make it work and ends up just making a very unlikeable character to us as viewers but not disliked enough in the series' universe (Her "friends" for example) when it is 100% deserved. I was genuinely having faith that they would fix this since I hate judging by the first 3 episodes but the fact that it only double-downs on her behavior, especially in the last 2 episodes showcases a lot of the problems of the show as a whole, it is disappointing that it might not even get better in season 2 (iirc there is going to be one)
I guess it just feels like the character simply accepts that they are an asshole but gets rewarded for it so it's okay, instead of "hey I'm an asshole, I know I am but I'm trying to get better" which is what I thought the show was leading towards but finishing it clearly it really was just a self-insert of a real person who thinks their behavior is okay when in fact it's disgusting, racist, sexist, manipulative, and over-all just an abusive asshole that nobody should ever have to deal with. It is such a shame that the only time I ever actually see the asshole archetype work is stuff like Bojack or Always sunny in Philadelphia where they actually get their comeuppance or something similar.
It also hurts since Velma is already a well-established character that has plenty of history to work with this new way of going about her character such as even her snarkiness and sassiness that could have played more naturally. They could had her be bitter and shitty at first due to her mom missing but could had easily had her eventually warming up and overcoming that to being the character that we all know and love or at least a tragic character that we see as someone who is an asshole but we as viewers knows that she will be better, not the other way around where the show says she will be better or already is better by the end.
Sorry this is long it just kind of upsetting to me to see that shows/novels/comics like this fail to make compelling main characters over and over again since the person who creates it put themself into the MC too much like "I'm not starfire" being a great example of the same exact issue Velma has with it's MC and with the ending of rewarding their behavior instead of self-reflecting that their behavior was dogshit

I feel like a lot of Velma videos I've seen have dunked on the show without giving clear analysis--the way that you put together the problems and wove together the evidence in the video crafted a great argument for me that really highlighted my feelings on the show. Thanks!

From the few bits I was able to watch of Velma (largely through reviews), I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves Fred. He's so divorced from his usual depiction, but at least he's consistent in it and the difference adds to the hilarity. It's easier to keep my smile when he's on-screen because he's so silly, and not really malicious in his meanness compared to other characters. He's just Like That. He's this pocket of silly nonsense and as you said, his voice actor was KILLING it. I wanna hear this guy in more roles.

They really don't understand what makes an angry, spiteful main character good. A show that comes to my mind is Dan Vs. It's about the main character, Dan, getting angry at something every episode. The reason why it's great is because even though he gets irrationally angry at things, he is not cruel to his friends. He has a reason why he's angry and his sheer dedication to getting revenge makes it funny. In this show, most of the time Velma is cruel to people who are supposed to be her friend (or love interest), she gets mad for no reason, and she does a lot of bad things with no consequences.

you put it so well into words! the animation is great, the voice acting is good, the production value works! the writing just messes it all up. this was a super well writen video! puts my thoughts of the show into words to a T

Maybe it’s a new kinda show where you want the main character to die, but the killer gets stopped by Velma’s “friends”

It's really ironic when you remember Mindy says she did it because "Velma does all the work and gets none of the credit." And Velma barely does any of the work. Not to mention the BS hypnotism that causes her panic attacks when she tries to solve anything. It's like, what is the point of all this? The show has a terrible mystery, and all of its Meta Jokes end up with a pause like "You see what I did?" Norville hates Drugs, and it's funny because Shaggy being a stoner is a meme. Diya says Mystery Jaloppie because the model of the van is the same as the Mystery Machine. You know it's forced because she'd likely say Van.
That's not how you do Meta Humor. Previous versions of Scooby-Doo did Meta Humor well. They made jokes about splitting up. Fred says it's time to split up and Shaggy and Scooby start walking away. Fred says he didn't say how they were, and shaggy says "We always do it this way". Or when they split up and Shaggy and Fred are together, and they don't really mesh. Or the mention about Fred always sending Shaggy and Scooby together because they always find the monster first. Or the time Shaggy points out they all wear the same thing everyday.
Velma acknowledges cliches and tropes, but does nothing else.

I like that you’re a lot more sympathical with this show than most people( like saying the animation is good) while pointing out the negatives instead of just yelling in the mic over it.

I have to disagree with this being the best looking Scooby Doo show. It has some great highs like with the hallucinations or any scene that has high contrast and distinct lighting, but that isn't the majority of the show. Most of the show is extremely flat with virtually no shadows or highlights.
I'd say Mystery Incorporated is definitely a better looking show. The characters have more depth and shading to them through the entire show rather than just in certain scenes.
Also some scene in Velma looked like they barely had an in betweens in them, you can see the animation jumping between key frames with maybe one smear to connect them.
