  • It was strange expereince we had. We traveled by train from South Korea to the North Korea border. The journey embarked from Seoul ( The capital city of South Korea ) We decided to take a train by ourselves instead of taking DMZ tour by bus from Seoul. The DMZ can only be visited as part of a guided tour, during which travelers get the chance to see the Joint Security Area (JSA), also known as Panmunjom, where the North and South met for peace talks during the war.

    I visited the DMZ from the North Korean side and that was great, it is much more relaxed and much easier than this looks. The bus from Pyongyang is long and uncomfortable, but its all part of the experience. From the north you cannot enter the famous blue buildings but you can stand on the balcony right next to them and look across (and photos with the Northern soldiers are allowed). Its not for everyone, but I recommend the north! It is very very interesting.

      Seoul is in South Korea. There is the North Korea which is a separate country and Pyongyang is its' capital. Many people think Korea is one country. Actually you have to be clear about whether it is South Korea you are going or North Korea.

      Bit younger than you, did HOT rotation there in 1991, ours was one of the last. RoK took over completely shortly after. Bet your time was a bit more exciting, though we still had occasional South-bound bullets to keep things interesting (none ever reached us, no "real" threat).

    If you are military, you can go to OSAN Air Base and buy the DMZ/JSA tour from MWR. They take us all the way inside the Blue UN building at the JSA.

    A few years ago I was lucky to visit the DMZ through a Seoul tour company out of the Koreana Hotel. Very good experience since I was able to see a number of different sites in the DMZ, which included that train station. We were bussed around. Tight security and our bus was frequently boarded by US military checking IDs. I would visit again.

    Welcome Back. I went to Korea and the DMZ on a teaching fellowship about 10 years ago with Korea University and the Ministry of Culture with 14 other U.S. teachers, and did the Blue Buildings and stuff. It was kinda nice because we were the only ones there at the time and for our entire 3 week trip we had our own translators from the University (International Studies Grad Students). At the DMZ they made us put away any camera with a big lens. My little point ant shoot was fine though. I have a picture of a North Korean soldier looking at me with binoculars taking a picture of him..LOL He was on the steps of the main building across the way. Its a bit blurry since I just had a little camera.

    I would say it depends what you want. Since your trip is about the train trip to north Korea and that area incl tour approx 40.000 won (the same with tour-bus is approx 60.000 won)
    If you want to go to go to Panmunjom-Joint Security Area its approx 100.000 won with bus
    If you want to se both its approx 160.000 won with bus

    I visited DMZ in 2017. Went with the tour bus. We went to few places around the DMZ and inside the 3rd tunnel etc. It was an awesome experience but it's very sad that there are two koreas. Waiting for unification. They charged 70 usd. Inclduing pick up taxi from the hotel which i was in incheon at that time. The JSA experience was not included because u needed to book 3 days before coming. the guide spoke in english. Very good english, honestly. She was korean.

      The US military I had contact with at the DMZ was among the most stupid people I have ever meet travelling. Embarrassing for the US to have people like them representing their country. I am an x-military and has been to 78 countries, I have also been on the other side of the border for 12 days and visited DMZ from the north as well. You can’t compare the two on the same day, north was relaxed and dignified, the south was a hyped propaganda clown show, it was so damn embarrassing.

  • @winlanzar41
    @winlanzar41 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The last time I was there, the train station was closed. What I know is, for you to go to the border, you need some clearance, thus you need a tour group to process the clearance. I only have the short tour as I didn’t know that a clearance is needed for you to go to the boarder.

    I had similar DMZ tour ( i think provide transportation only) in Nov 2010. ( for JSA, must join expensive local guided tour). I asked bus driver or korean tourist the time need to get back the bus and photo to mark the vehicle number of bus. I follow korean tourist , they gave me simple explaination and listen to other tour guide occasionally as long don't stop me. OK for me due to budget corncern

    Gidday, my father was on the DMZ with the Australian army in 1954-55. When he went on leave to Japan, the exchange rate for 10 Shillings = $1.00 au, was over 1000 yen. Today the exchange rate is 70 yen. Camping in winter on the DMZ is pretty harsh, the Canadians complained. My dad could spend to whole day in Tokyo, using only the small change in his pocket. My daughter did the same tour as you. She also could not get into the building. It seems if North Korea is having a hissy fit, they close down the building.

    Very tragic how families were separated post WWII and the result since. No civilians can cross at the DMZ from north to south. If North Koreans want to flee they have to go up to China and risk their lives and safety. Many who have attempted to get out of DPRK (N. Korea) remain missing.
