    This moment. This moment right here. Let me tell you about this moment and my love for it.
    In execution, it was so frustrating from a combat design perspective. The stifling of movement from the conveyor belt with little space on the side-rims to take advantage of; the moveset of the Controllers working to a frustrating degree in terms of the arena with controlled Vortigaunts (that you're probably choosing not to kill); the nature of the Gluon Gun's heavy tracking requirement (as it's nature of weapon class) meaning that any Clone Grunts can pop up unannounced or your tunnel-visioning could lead to you popping a Clone Vat unintended. And the gloss-over of the Vorts comes full-circle here now, with the gigantic range of Controller's mind-control and ability for it to go through walls leads to the Vortigaunts with high area of denial at chokepoints and pseudo-hit scan attacks among everything else. Not to mention the fact that there was more than one case of Controllers playing passively, with me in a losing scenario one way or another - strictly adhering to my self-imposed rule of not harming the Vortigaunt slaves.
    Right there, though. That's the catch. It would be remiss of me to not bring up how Interloper had changed so radically from its initial inception - so much so that they're almost two entirely different chapters. Engagements with Controllers are kept to a minimum, traded instead for their simple counterpart: the Vortigaunts - tired and weary; so much so that they only give you a passing glance on their way to perform their work even still. You're a rogue element - in every sense of the word, but they never seem to recognize that. In fact, they never seem to recognize a life of their own. Work concessions are turned off for your goal, yet their dissonance from the environment keeps them piddling against controls that are fluctuating from expectancy. One later segment has them crowded entirely around destructive green boils, yet they never seem to distance themselves when you shoot at those things. Nor does the game punish you for having them caught in the crossfire. They seem unnerved. Expectant. And why wouldn't they be?
    Crawling in the vents of the thumping, harmonic machine, where some of their corpses lay. Stepping on the corpses of the "failures" that they themselves had to dictate. It's the build-up, to put it in a word. The entire build up to this one section to make me decide that killing the vortigaunts was something I could not do - even when doing so would help so much more in service of my own goal. And I could still point fingers so much so at all of those bad components on the gameplay side of things, but they falter the moment you realize all the work that was built up to set this situation up from the get-go.
    The song itself supplements even as a build-up with its diagetic nature. The decisive thumping - rhythmic action; resolve to motion - to the harmonic human voice on the pause to recover your wits and health. And then they come together: the human rogue element - the one Freeman - pounding against it all. Alerts from your HEV are a secondary supplement to the music: a voice brimming with urgency at your condition - a reminder of your mortality. Yet your liberation becomes theirs - those Vortigaunts that watch - and in that moment, you can feel yourself becoming what they embody you as. In this moment, you can feel where the legend culminates and takes form.
    From that, those struggles of mortality on your health and suit become real. It's why, despite all the qualms I have with this overall, that I can't bring myself to change anything about it. It is simply genius.
    Thank you, Joel. You, and everyone else in the Black Mesa team, did unrivaled work here. You've made Xen into something so incomprehensibly beautiful that it borders on unreal.

      This so well conveys what I was feeling but couldn't quite put into words myself, I did knew though that I was to become their saviour, their inspiration, to the vortigaunts that is, what a great experience xen is overall!

      This passage:
      "The song itself supplements even as a build-up with its diagetic nature. The decisive thumping - rhythmic action; resolve to motion - to the harmonic human voice on the pause to recover your wits and health. And then they come together: the human rogue element - the one Freeman - pounding against it all. is fantastic, really amazing.

    This is by far my favorite track from this outstanding album. Have taken the liberty to make "my own" twist on this in Audacity. Just removing and reversing some of the choral parts in the middle section, and shortening the silence at the beginning and the end of the track to make a "seamless" transition when repeating it to death. Remains to tripple the section from 0:04 to 0:48. Can,t get enough of this track... Has been circulating with Ascension for the last 4 days on my headphones...... . The track is so crispy, the drums sounds real, it has the right amount of energy and drive that it makes the juices flow in a way that I wanna "break something" (not for real - but the juices are all the way up there)... And it's interesting to analyze it "to death" for all the nuances within the track. And I cant help but finding a sound that reminds me of a harmonica at just about the 28 sec marker. I'd really love to se a "The Making of"-video of this brilliant soundtrack....

    Really like how this track keeps looping until you get to the end of the section rather than only playing thru once and then no music. Same with Ascension. Actually made it kinda disappointing to reach the end of the conveyor section since that meant the music stops. Just because those grunts that come out of the pods don't have their armor or hive-hands doesn't mean they're not dangerous. In fact, they might have been more annoying to deal with than the controllers.

    Most people have been talking about how this plays during the conveyor belt section and while it is eargasmic there as it is later, I can't help but feel it perfectly matched the "slow elevator" at the end, the heavenly vocals give a feeling of "Ascension" (heh), which fits thematically with that point as the elevator goes up and you're incinerating Controllers left right and center, heal and recharge HEV suit's energy with the crystals then at it again till you reach the top.

  • @unfa00
    @unfa00 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I think the vocals are not perfectly in pitch...
    But I am totally crazy about that. Also this is very hard to sing well, despite the simplicity of the part.
    When I record vocals it always takes dozens of takes and months of work to get them to sound in tune. I refuse to use pitch-correction on vocals on principle though.

    • @JoelNielsenMusic
      @JoelNielsenMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Good ear. I never like to make things perfect. It's the slight offs/human side that brings a lot of the emotion. Whether pitch or tempo.

    • @unfa00
      @unfa00 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JoelNielsenMusic I think you're right. I completely tolerate it in some styles of music (grunge?). Maybe it's the years I've spent singing under a conductor who would not be satisfied with the choir being detuned by intervals none of us could hear after years of training...
      I guess it's good to be able to perceive that, but often seeking this pitch perfection in singing can be quite... absorbing.
      I do prefer imprefect, but authentic singing over robotic autotune I guess.
      I still can hear imperfections in pretty much everything I've published so far, though no one ever seems to notice or care. Maybe I should cut it some slack, embrace the sloppiness and just enjoy the music (both as a listener and as a creator).

    У меня лично такая ассоциация с этой композицией, это что то напоминающее тоску по своему дому, Гордон находится очень далеко от нашей земли, один, противостоящий инопланетным существам, эта музыка мне своей мотивацией чем то напоминает песню Татьяны Овсиенко о дальнобойщике, который где то далеко от всех, едет один, так же и Гордон, один пробирается сквозь полчища монстров, наверняка тоскуя по дому... где то между сражениями наверняка сидит и плачет, нет не плачет, ведь мужчины не плачут, они только огорчаются....

    This soundtrack sounds like it could have went well in a movie about the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Imagine this: 0:00 right after the grand staircase dome implodes, the protagonist escapes the 1st class gymnasium, water right behind him, he starts running towards the stern of the ship, as the pitch of the vessel increases and the stern rises higher and the water chases him up the boat deck while it swallows the forward part of the ship behind him, funnels collapsing, glass shattering, people screaming for their lives. 0:47 he makes it to the third funnel, the lights go out, he looks around stunned at the sudden darkness as he keeps running, everything goes in slow mode for him out of pure shock and realization that he is about to perish, the deck below him slanting more and more. 1:03 The ship breaks apart, knocking our protagonist to the wooden deck, he gets up as the severed stern of the ship settles. 1:17 As the stern of the ship begins to get pulled under, our protagonist jumps to A deck, then B deck, where the palm court and the 2nd class promenades are and finally makes it to the aft well deck, as he makes a mad dash for the after-castle of the ship (the poop deck). 1:47 The stern of the Titanic goes vertical, our protagonist climbs up the side railing of the after-castle for the very end of the stern as the stern section of the ship begins to plunge, he makes it just in time. 2:01 The stern section of the Titanic finally goes under, plunging our protagonist and over 1500 people into the water, the very vast majority of whom will never live to see daylight.

    When LIECR turn into some sort of white fusion core

  • @Rami_Yazbek
    @Rami_Yazbek 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Joel, the version heard in-game has a small issue: during the second half of the track (specifically the part that is looped at the end), there are a few vocals that are cut off rather abruptly. Are you planning to fix this?
    Other than that, I absolutely love this track :)

    • @JoelNielsenMusic
      @JoelNielsenMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not noticed this myself... When exactly does this happen?

    • @Rami_Yazbek
      @Rami_Yazbek 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoelNielsenMusic In the game files, in the "xen-conveyb" WAV file, the issue starts at 0:30 (the equivalent of 1:19 on this TH-cam video), and also occurs at 0:37, 0:45, 0:52, 1:07 and 1:10 (these timestamps are for the file itself). There are some background vocals (with a reverb-like effect) which were present in your original track, but which have been removed from the in-game version, and I guess this is one of the reasons.

    • @JoelNielsenMusic
      @JoelNielsenMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Rami_Yazbek So for this 'loop' to work in game... I had to pick a point where I could endlessly cut this piece. The vocal 'cut-out' seemed like a great spot, as it gives the song a bit of a pause, and then jumps back into the beat. This spot could maybe be a hair rough though if listened to very carefully. But if you go to the 1:13 timestamp in the 'xen-conveyb' file, you should hear that exact same transition when it gets to the 'end' of the file and loops back around. Both parts should be seemless, and in my own internal testing, they appear to be on my end.

    • @Rami_Yazbek
      @Rami_Yazbek 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoelNielsenMusic (Sorry for the late reply) Yep, I obviously noticed that it's the same transition; I just thought I'd point out the various cutouts that I noticed, as it wasn't the case original track. But to be fair, yeah, I had to listen very carefully with headphones. Initially it's the vocals at 1:11 and 1:15 (in the xen-conveyb file) that mainly drew my attention. Anyway, I guess it's not a big deal, I'm pretty sure most players won't notice that, since they're too busy with spamming the gluon gun against the numerous alien controllers and grunts :P

      The song is meant to be a metaphor of a conveyor belt/system. It's also a section that was designed to be run through very quickly, while ignoring the mobs. As the team has now seen most people are trying to fight through it...
