Lets not expect rock singers to be have genius IQ's...he is sincere and thoughtful and that is a hell of a lot more than one can say of most people in the entertainment industry...he does look a little bit bedraggled and haunted as one of you said but it must not be easy to live that type of life style. I remain thankful for the wonderful music Deep Purple have brought us all these years!!!!
He is a fascinating man I had a drink with many years ago. He is also laboring under a severe hangover. And yet, he granted the interview and didn't "phone it in." He was serious, reflective (if it did not always make complete logical sense), and is genuinely nice. Thanks for posting.
I take much comfort and inspiration in listening to this and finally finally understanding the reasons I have been called to listen to this man's voice, literal and figurative, spoken or sung. (the fact that he could scream a rock song like a jungle cat belies a tortured conscientious soul)
i am staggered ,no, STAGGERED at this interview - ian always seemed so happy go lucky , funny , light hearted ...but here- not only does he sound ponderous and depressed - he looks it too . Thats not to say there is no merit in his comments , its just strange to see a side of a person you admired since the 70s . i suppose his lyrics always suggested that he was deeper than his persona - but to have it confirmed - by himself no less= AMAZING ! Hey ian....if you read this good luck to ya fella
ian gillan deals a lot better than most 'rock legends' with his own limits. he's truly committed to his music and he has never compromised his beliefs to fit into the fashion. although he changes his ways from time to time. if you check his early interviews you'll make sure of that.
i'd listen to ian gillan for hours and days, if i was given the chance. he sounds and looks like a pretty thoughful fellow. and most importantly, his ideas and mind echo with a very strong force.
Deep, soul-searching, and highly intellectual, his body language reveals just how haunted he is. Not just another shallow, self-absorbed rock star, this guy knows the deal, is very well traveled, and has friends all over the world. Interesting character. The other side of him is a hard drinking, practical joke playing wild man. I consider his lyrics to be on the level with Bob Dylan.
definate inner reflections here, the song" fools " comes to mind , when he wrote that song then , is probably the frame of mind that you see here, ...which is usually put on paper... here he speaks it....this is ian gillan telling you about life and the eventual end and the" fools" whom he sees as the culprits , when you get older you try to put this life and its meaning into some sort of order, he has done this...very revealing side of gillan, listen to " before time began " DP
He's a deep man who is obviously worried at the time of this interview. When you wake up to the horrors of 'reality' it can be a very difficult thing to deal with on a day to day basis. Drink numbs it a bit, But in the end you have got to deal with your new found understanding of life. I wish him well in his quest for truth. And hope that at this time of writing he is happy and content.
(he has earned it, LOL!!) :) it is amazing the rockers, and rock legends who even Survived the 70's, and Fame....WOW!!, Im so GLAD Ian Gillan, MADE IT!!!
I totally disagree w/Mr Gillan about so many things, but he's a star in his own league and I totally respect the fact that he says what he believes. Most of those who've reached his status would NOT do interviews like this- especially for free!
he is completely aware what is happening with the humanity. If the supremacy is the last step of evolution might be that we will turn back to the start point, to the trees and caverns, to the sea, to the "chemical soup",and the cycle will start again...I love his mind, not only his music.
I mostly agree. I definitely agree on the first half. As for getting old, yes, I'm not saying it's cool, but if you're aging gracefully, then it's kind of okay.
I think you all tend to take him way TOO seriously. The man is just sharing his thoughts, everybody has them. The difference is that Ian is able to make his thoughts very clear to almost anyone. Another thing that he thinks really deep philosophically, not IDEOLOGICALLY.
Obviously, whatever Ian says gets edited. I know what he wants to say very clearly, but cannot. He takes the long route. Religon, money and abuse of power is the problem.
DeeperPhantom I wish age meant something but in some cases it doesn't . As soon as human beings find out they are older then someone else, they adapt the mentality that they are better then the other person, which is very chimp like thing to adapt. I must agree though, Ian doesn't seem happy at all anymore. What can I say, getting older sucks and anyone who says different is lying.
Im so sorry, Ritchie, "cannot understand it....so, yes he most likely DOES Laugh." (poor thing) I think Ian Gillan referred to Ritchie Blackmore, as an Intellectual Midget. (on more than one occasion.)
Wow, who knew?? I love his music AND agree with his philosophy! Ian, you are a smart man. Thank you for your music, and now, thank you for not being one of the billions of religious idiots that are turning this world into shit.
Last stated it was said that only those who are chosen are given an apportunity to come to meet the creator. maybe im not one of them but i wish to be. I beleive i have faith. Maybe im not a rock star and i dont have a rockstars bank account but thank God for that. there is nothing I wanna leave behind and there is nothing better than a the sheer idea of a better palce to be than her for death to someone like me is profit for i shall go to a place much better than this. Faith.
FFwwooooaa..... No comment on Gillans thoughts - But - he doesn't seem happy these days. - Sure prob tired after a show - but it seemed he used to smile a lot more...
Its absurd to think man can understand its creator because the creator can u8nderstand you but you can never understand he who creates, There is a fine line between religion and faith and religion is only existed to separate man.Jesus never came to this earth to bring a religion, that was never his intention he brought FAITH and as his own words stated he who has FAITH in ME shall see paradise. Words spoken at Cross.
A simbiosis exists due to a finer nature in wich man needs man to exist but a deeper espiritual value come only to those who experience a deeper more atenuating pain to ones soul that leads to self reformation. How can you deny self stardom and ability to self proclamation in contrast to soul serachin and change. Its undoubtful that these misteries lie to the weak and in need not to rock stars. First you experience somethin before you talk about it as if you master it. No relevance?
He's pontificating like mad, as though he's trying to instruct the world on how to live a better way. What was he thinking? You almost hear violins in the corner of the room. Candice must have been alarmed at Ritchie screaming with laughter and attacking the television with his guitar.
I agree about 'religious idiots turning this world...' - but give Ian a few more years to develop his philosophy, say 4 million people who follow his philosophy for starters - and I think yet another bunch of 'religious idiots' would have been created.
Ой, какой умничка! Как все правильно сказал! Горжусь и восхищаюсь! Гиллан Forever!!!!!

You are the best, Ian! 💜💜💜

I love how this is same guy who sang Digital Bitch, Child in Time and Gethsemane.
This is the best interview I have ever watched with Ian Gillan.
He is a really wise man... I totally agree with him.
C'est un philosophe, non seulement musicien

Умный Иэн Гиллан! Филосовские размышления. ❤

Definately a man worth listening to!
This is the Original J.C Superstar!!!!!!!

You have missed his point entirely if you think religion is the root cause of war and hate. It is mankind itself he is talking about.
I think you all tend to take him way TOO seriously. The man is just sharing his thoughts, everybody has them. The difference is that Ian is able to make his thoughts very clear to almost anyone. Another thing that he thinks really deep philosophically, not IDEOLOGICALLY.

You are not alone Ian. I have nightmares too.
" Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."
современный мудрец
Как же так? С чего Вы взяли, что он мудрец? Требую доказательств!
Gillan is "young" for his age. He is 65, but looks like he just 51-52.
Well looks like everyone has thoughts..He got yall thinking anyway, and thats cool
He has been blessed by God with an outstanding voice. I see a deeply troubled man---sad.
Of course we all wanna stay young and handsome :) But alas time is merciless...
Love you....too
Exactly :)
@AWGMJANS I hear you,but then again: Gillan is just speakng his mind.
DeeperPhantom I wish age meant something but in some cases it doesn't . omg he should have taken a first in PPE from Oxford. And would have.
Штаны спортивные у него классные
MoonchildMindaugas2 awesome. Aging gracefully is great, but we all wish for that fountain of youth as well.
He was obviously on the sauce during this interview.
I think Ian drinks to forget the truth of human beings.
Im so sorry, Ritchie, "cannot understand it....so, yes he most likely DOES Laugh." (poor thing)

He just doen't seem well, hope there's nothing seriously wrong with him.
Either way, Deep Purple kicks ass!!!
\m/

Ian is the best ever to be hard'n'heavy vocalists ever! But, it seems to me he is a little bit drunk)))
Maybe he was tired this time. He looks tired, look at him touching his head every once in a while, - that might be a sing of a headache.

Ian should have played a character in Lord of the Rings
He would have played the part of Aragorn when he was young.
He's pontificating like mad, as though he's trying to instruct the world on how to live a better way.
What was he thinking?

.
I dig Deep Purple!
Ian Gillan seems to have a few screws loose though.. :D
´
stick to your singing ian!
All the stuff you say has already been said... not exactly high class philosophy
He answered questions he was asked
