I mostly agree as a team can only play whoever is infront of them and they still took care of business. I will say that realistically when the league does take travel, strength of conferences, # of games per week, strength of schedule balancing into it. The probability of getting a long stretch of games for multiple teams isn't likely. Simply because it also means they will get a brutal stretch to compensate for the easy one.
Didn’t know the pre-slide kings, 8 streak kraken, Leafs, and the rangers were bad. You can only play the teams ahead of you and tbh if it were so easy then we’d see 16 streaks a lot more often
@@Stalfoes you can cherry pick teams however you want but the facts are the facts. During the streak they only played ONE team in the top10 and only THREE in the top 15 (as of the all star game). Agreed. 'Finally had to face a good team' is such an ignorant comment - It's not like the Oilers are the only team to ever have an easy schedule, so why don't they all do it? It's not like they beat-up the Sharks, Ducks, Jackets and Hawks for all 16 games, either.
The Oilers typically seem to come out flat after a long layoff. When I saw that they had over a week off and faced Vegas first game back I knew it would be hard to keep the streak alive. Having said that, if it was so easy to win 16 in a row why isn't every team doing it? Great breakdown of the Oilers team play lately! Go Oilers!!!

gotta be the best type of hockey content i’ve watched. helps new viewers learn the game, and its just a generally interesting video idea. love ur videos!
The streak they were chasing was the streak set by the 92-93 Penguins. After back to back cup wins, they go on a 17 game winning streak, they win the presidents trophy and bow out in the first round to the Islanders I think. So yeah, doesn't matter and Vegas was bailed out in the 2nd period by their goalie who statistically is top 3 in the league right now.
@@BOG0690the Penguins streak came during a time with ties, in fact it was a tie which broke the streak. Edmonton have played great, but if ties still happened, they would have had a streak of three wins. Against the Kings, it took a shootout.
I think that ALL STAR BREAK resulted in the Oilers losing a bit of their momentum. Lots of NHL playoff history shows that teams with the longer breaks from ending their previous series earlier than their next opponent, come out a little rusty compared to the team with the shorter break. I think the Oilers came out out a little rust against Vegas, but ultimately, it was not a big deal. Winning 24 of their previous 27 games had moved the Oil up into a solid.2’nd place in their division, which meant much more than tying.a league record 17 game winning streak. They were now in a solid playoff position, which they kept until the playoffs began.

I was one of the very few who wrote a comment to the earlier Oilers-bashing videos in support of McDavid and Draisaitl, I don't think they're out of the woods yet... I believe the defense and Skinner simply played way above their normal levels and it could be a bit of a hard landing if they fall back to old habits...
I think something that is lost here is that prior to the 16 game win streak they also had an 8 game win streak. Including the loss to vegas, they’re 24 wins in their last 28 games. Will that come down? Yea for sure. But i question “old habits”. That’s nearly 1,700 minutes of game, plus probably another 3,500 minutes of practice. They look like a completely different team - the team everybody expected them to be right out of the gate. If anything - when you look at the second half of last season, and the first half of this season, the brutal start of the 23/24 season looks like the anomaly, and not the norm you seem to be implying.
@@ryanbaldwin4849 You have a lot of good points here. I didn't want to imply that they are as bad as at the very beginning of the season - not at all. But they still have their issues many want to brush under the carpet because of the two super shiny objects they have upfront. They were not that bad of a team before they fired their coach, neither did they just learn how to skate, pass, or defend since then. It was always in them. But the same goes for the bad stuff - it is always in them. Where I want to go with this is momentum and confidence. It is a powerful sword - when you have it, just as well the absence of it. It then really comes down to what can they deliver on a constant basis (what is their true talent level). They massively underachieved before the coaching change, and they did, with quite a margin overachieve since. This is why coaching change bounces wear off. Hence, the true level of the Oilers might be somewhere in between the amazing win streak they just put up and the hockey they showed us before the coaching change. Just as well as they are one injury away from struggling again...what if #97 or #29 go down?? The two together are much more powerful than the sum of their individual talents alone.
@@ulrichsuter3548 yea that’s all fair and i appreciate the discourse. I think the oilers are often seen as “just mcjesus and drai”, but as a life long oilers fan they are so much more than that now. Ryan Nugent Hopkins has turned a leaf and has averaged roughly 1ppg over the past 1.5 seasons. Zach Hyman has blossomed into a legit threat with roughly 1ppg as well. You have Bouchard who is just shy of a 1ppg dman. On top of that you have Ekholm, Kane, Nurse, and Now Perry, which makes the team literally tough to play against. The team has a lot more depth than they did two years ago, and more than last year. The big question i have, and it has been the same question for 30 years, is goal tending. I know skinner has been closely watched his whole life and he has a lot of respect among players, but so far it hasn’t translated into consistent play (until recently). And then there’s campbell which is just a huge turd of a signing. Frankly, i think the team can stay competitive as much as any team who loses their star player, but if Skinner gets wrecked, or gets overplayed and exhausted, or loses confidence? We are sunk. Look at us, having decent conversation on TH-cam of all places.

@@davidwilliams9489Yeah 100%. I knew in my gut the All Star break was going to completely flatten the momentum they had, and it would be hard to build it back up from scratch when you’re playing one of the best teams in the league. I’m not even an Oilers fan but I was rooting for them to beat that record! Damn man.
Oilers have been doing amazing and it's been fun to watch. I hate to say that the All-Star Circus probably ruined their momentum (wouldn't be surprised if McDavid makes that point too), but there's one thing that's getting overlooked here when it comes to this particular record. The 92-93 Pens that set the 17 wins in a row during the regular season did this without a shootout match or any ties. If this Oilers team was given the same circumstances as the record holders did, the Oilers would have ended their streak some time ago.
The only thing that keeps me from jumping through TH-cam and strangling for using the word "failure" in reference to just about anything involving McDavid, is that you had the forethought to use "quotes" the irony of the title almost killed me. More to the point, my lack of initial notice of the irony is what almost killed me. Billy Beane said it in "Moneyball"..."I hate losing. I hate NOT WINNING even more!" (or something like that) McDavid's reaction to the loss is great. almost feel bad for their next opponent.
As a Kings fan I'm torn, obviously we've had huge issues with them over the last three(ish) years, but my roommate is a big Oilers fan and honestly they're super fun to watch. Oh well, I figure the fans will take 16-1 every 17 games :)
@@davidwilliams9489i get what ur saying but also it’s different because obviously i would hate to see the kings win 16 in a row as a oilers fan but i would be in awe watching it happen.
People who keep saying "tHeY fInAlLy HaD tO fAcE a GoOd TeAm" or "iT wAs A sOfT sChEdUlE" seem to be missing two things: the first being that if this is so easy then why isn't every team doing it, and the second being that not only was half the run good teams (including the LA Kings) but teams we historically have struggled against. Like look at where those teams were when we beat them, not where they are now. The Kraken were on a bit of a tear themselves, the Kings were the only team keeping us out of the top 3, and historically we had struggled against the New York Rangers- those are just three examples.
The 8 game streak they beat Washington who was good at that time New York and they beat Vegas but Vegas fans are saying that one don’t count because they needed overtime. The oilers came back in that one they were down going into the third Vegas folded their lead. It’s just haters ignore them.
I think one thing people aren’t talking about the most is how good Skinner got during this run dude was questionable before but if he can keep up solid numbers, he will have a home as a starting goaltender
All teams lose some games, even the best teams. I predict a 7-2-1 run in the next 10. The 24-3-0 was a crazy run anyway, a third of a season at 72-9-0 pace in 81 games....
Wish buffalo would have made a coaching change months ago. The oilers turn around is something I can only dream of buffalo ever doing. What a run. Sorry to see it fall just short of the record.
Great video, and you`re one of the few guys out there that understands the combination of defense and goaltending. People still think it was goalies that let the Oilers down to start the season. In fact it was bad team defense paired with subpar goalies. The gaps, space and absence of any pressure have been a feast for other teams forwards during that 18 games. The Oilers, i`m not sure about them. 16 W is impressive. But the schedule was soft and the first proper opponent did bring down the streak. How good is their middle 6 and their D really? How good is their goaltending at all? They are running Skinner + Pickard, which is by no means a great tandem in the league. They could use a 2nd line RW, a 3rd line Center, a top pair RD, a veteran backup. Good luck without cap space to figure that out. Right now, if i look at Florida, NYR, Bruins, Nucks, Jets, Avs, even Vegas when healthy, they seem to have more pieces in place. Look at the Avs, add a goalie and some depth, and that`s a cup winning team.
Adin Hill is an elite goalie. His GSAA -- which is a cumulative stat, by the way, it doesn't pro-rate to 60:00 minutes like GAA -- is more than Demko's IN HALF AS MANY STARTS! His save percentage is 39% better than the league average. His goals allowed average (opponents' S% normalized so that 100 is average and 99 is 1% better than 100) in Vegas's cup run would have been top-3 in the league had it played out over the whole season. I hear everyone coming out with their mock Olympic rosters, and quite frankly, Adin Hill WILL be the starter for Canada (barring injury). Hell if the Olympics were tomorrow, he'd be my pick.
After their first 8 game win streak this year, everyone was chirping calling it fluke and it won't change their odds. Lost 3 games then came right back for a 16 game win streak. They lost but who cares... The team played amazing through out. I hope they can just bounce back. Also, they didn't "fail" at making NHL history. They set multiple records during this streak. Just didn't get the Longest Win Streak.
I don't really mind. We now have a winning mentality that we would not have had in the beginning of the season. This win-streak has helped us get in to playoff contention, and I'm more happy of that. We may have had an easy schedule, but we've played good. That's all that matters.
Adin Hill was absolutely phenomenal for vegas, shame the oilers lost, but the season is not over, keep your eyes on the price Edmonton, making it to the playoffs
Amazing run by the Oilers. It had become somewhat of a distraction, so now they can focus on winning lots more games and getting ready for the playoffs which should be great. They have an amazing bunch of players.
People say they only played bad teams, they beat the Rangers, Leafs, Avs, Devils and Kings, and they beat Vegas during the 9 game streak they had a few weeks prior. Not every team is a cup contender, so if you win 16 games, chances are only 3-4 of the teams you’ll play will be cup calibre
I always hate when people say “they only won because the goalie played well” like ok? The goalie is on the team. It’s like saying “they only won because their forwards scored more goals” it sounds ridiculous
I'm fine with this logic as long as you're not a hypocrite. Meaning by the same logic the Bruins record from last year shouldn't count as they also got OT/SO points in that 135, which didn't exist when the Habs got 132 in 76.
I think it was a good game by both teams. Other than Hill standing on his head it was even. Now this isn’t an excuse but a question. Did the ice have a factor in the game? I noticed players from both teams losing edges and bouncing pucks etc. is this a factor that sways games into LV favor? Do other teams visiting have same issues? Curious on thoughts from others
The only thing that pisses me off about this loss is looking at the record and knowing if bettman point’s didn’t exist we would be 2 points back. Why should you be rewarded for losing past regulation?
I think it’s really unfortunate that the All-Star break happened when it did. I felt in my gut that having that week off would kill all that momentum they had built up, and then they’d have to return to the ice and face a very good team to continue the streak. The Oilers run was still incredible but I was really rooting for them to beat that record for the sake of NHL history. 😢
That stretch certainly saved their season. I had to quit watching after Woodcroft’s firing. The hole they dug themselves was immense. I actually can’t believe they are sitting in a top 10 position right now.
in those 16 games, the oilers faced such paper thin oponents that it should be it's own analysis. beating only 4 teams above .500, LA mid implosion, the flyers who are an anomaly, the leafs who constantly beat themselves and the rangers; that one was legit, huge win. then you have the sharks, cbj, ducks, hawks, habs and sens at the top of my head. winning 16 straight is hard enough, but you gotta look at the opposition. the streak was never sustainable. the oilers home stretch is even harsher and could prove to bite them for playtoff standings
I love all the idiots trying to downplay what Edmonton did. A 16-game win streak in a professional league is a 16-game win streak. There is a shit-ton of parity in the NHL. It's the 2nd longest streak ever. That's fucking impressive no matter who you are.
I get, and appreciate, the breakdown.. One small point I though of right off the bat, the Oilers with this 16 game run already made history and should be proud of the work they put in.. longest win streak in the WC, and of any Canadian team.. They're tied for second longest win streak ever.. I mean, that's historic, even if it doesn't beat out the record set by the pengolins.
it wasn't luck that got the Oilers 16 wins. just like it wasn't luck that the B's smashed the highest win streak in NHL history last year. the TEAM went for it, worked well, and played well enough to get those W's. sometimes teams are worn and rusty and the other team just out skates them. it happens. like the B's getting knocked out 1st round. why it's so crushing to get a big L on the verge of a record is armchair commentators hyping up fairweather fans. at this point literally EVERYTHING in sports is "we could be watching greatness"....when really you're just watching hockey. when your only expectation is "the next..." then you're only in for disappointment. the B's got pretty shaken up by the post season, and they were expected to fall into predictable patterns, a playoff team but just barely. certainly not a contender....and all hope is on Bedard for Chicago....but look at where those 2 teams finished the first 1/2 of the season. Bedard is flashy but nowhere near Crosby's rookie season (which considering all the circumstances, is the exact expectation for Bedard)...and with both Hall and Foligno, the Blackhawks SHOULD be setting up for playoff contention instead of praying that every team they play gets food poisoning the night before the game just for the chance of a wildcard. meanwhile the B's who were expected to barely make the playoffs are in good position for another President's Trophy run. will it be another record? NO. does it matter? NO. will the B's get another President's Trophy? probably not, but they still looking good.
I said it in all the all star game video comments…that the stupid all star break will ruin the momentum of hot teams and/or players and I specifically said that I bet Edmonton will end their streak due to the break.
the oilers dominated that game vs vegas too. Hill absolutely robbed that game from them, period. i could absolutley see Edmonton going on another 10+ game win streak.
As nice as it would have been to get to 17.....Most fans here in Edmonton are much less disappointed than you may think. I am sure the players feel the same.....Scoring titles, "Conference Champs" Individual awards MEAN NOTHING....There is only ONE prize the Oilers and Edmonton are interested in attaining.....No one will remember a "hot streak".....Only Stanley Cups. Oilers are 23--6 since the new coaching staff came in. Skinner has given up 2 or fewer gals in 18 out of his last 24 starts. They are on a mission. The loss to Vegas sucked because they hit 2 goal posts and honestly the game could have went either way......But what happens After April is their main concern.....and the fans,
Still depressing because last year playoffs we had the lead every game and choked. Scored the 1st goal vs vegas then Lose 3-1. Breaking the record could've been a curse but still taking the Lead once again and not being able to score is not showing enough improvement to win the Cup
@@lilPerc30You left out the part where Vegas was awarded extremely soft 5 on 3's in 2 consecutive games that pretty much decided the series. Not surprising since Pieterangelo got ONE GAME for almost de-capitating Draisaitl...And Las Vegas "Stanley Cup in 6 Years" was delivered right on schedule?....THAT is the truly depressing part.....Never realise you were an Oiler fan lilPerc30....Glad that you care.
Now this is spun as "failure" after just 1 loss right after 16 straight. Sure the record would've been nice but it's still one hell of a streak and seeing how they started out their climb upwards has been amazing.
That isn't fair. The NHL should give them three more first-round picks. Maybe could reverse last year and send Bedard to Edmonton. So they can finally beat this record.
Sound more like an oiler hype up video than anything else. They got lucky on the shorty. They had chances but ultimately you can’t rely on one line. Teams run 3 if not all four lines for a reason. What isn’t discussed in this video was all the dang holding calls in this game that went in oilers favors. And something I was noticing while at the game they tried to keep a guy on the opposing blue line for a stretch pass. Not sure if that was being over confident in your defensive play or desperation, takes on this strategy in the game?
It was a great game. However, reffing with non-calls was terrible both sides. One side was just less terrible than the other. The league officiating just stinks with there silly game management to keep it close and the betting high and cheapens the game. Call the trip on Marchessault AND on McDavid or the high sticks - it getting ridiculous.
Before the game, there was an announcement congratulating Kelly Sutherland for officiating over 1500 games. With that many under his belt, you think he’d be better at his job.

Streaks don't matter. Lord Stanley matters.
It would have mattered if they broke the record tho right?
@@CalgaryDynastar
Not if they go out in the 1st round
@@BOG0690I think they lost to the Islanders in the 2nd round, not the 1st.
come to think of it, winning 16 wins in a row is equivalent to full sweeping a playoff serie
They've gone 24-3 for last 27 games... I mean... the 16 game win streak paints a small picture of how good they are playing right now.
Great video, as an Oilers fan who watches every game this helped bring insight into how far they have come. Thanks.
Also I watched jets fans chant “you’re a backup” last playoff. This feels even better because of that.

There are some plays where you don't know how the puck stayed out.
On this one, I have no idea where it is.
It was such an amazing game. It came down to Hill just standing on his head. That guy is dangerous
They lost 1 game after winning 16 and people are talking like there done for the season lol
LFG VGK💪🏻Hill was MVP last night. Karlsson learned his lesson from his first empty net miss.

If it wasn't for the useless all-star break
Everybody and their mother knew the break would destroy their momentum. Now the Oilers are back down to earth...
Damn man.
They would have still lost to Vegas, break or no break.
As a hockey fan, I was rooting for the record. The all-star break definitely didn't help and VGK got Karlsson back. Enjoy the 2nd half of the season!
LETS GO OILERS! Great video analysis bro. We got weak spots but at least we look like we're finally trying

PLease replace Cody Ceci. AMEN.
Whats the background music being used?
There is Still Time by John Utah
Thank you Vegas from Pittsburgh. That being said, it has been amazing watching the Oiler’s 180.
Memeing on the Oilers was fun at times, but watching them bounce back was much funnier.
McDavid in his Yzerman two way play build up beginnings and I'm so down for that.
Still made history. Just 2nd longest streak.
What program do you use produce your videos?
I gotta give my flowers to Adin Hill, that contract is paying off mightily as he’s shown he’s ready for the big stage
Edmonton had the better skating group but Hill won that game for Vegas
I don't really mind. We now have a winning mentality that we would not have had in the beginning of the season. This win-streak has helped us get in to playoff contention, and I'm more happy of that. We may have had an easy schedule, but we've played good. That's all that matters.
Adin Hill was absolutely phenomenal for vegas, shame the oilers lost, but the season is not over, keep your eyes on the price Edmonton, making it to the playoffs
1:06 the most miserable time is... every playoff 😂
The run doesn't completely save their season. Still 36 games to go and I would argue this is the more difficult half.
Knights deserve a bit more respect….
We dont want more respect. We like things just how they are..... 1 playoff miss and one stanley cup in 6 years... We dont mind our current pace :)
Apparently Columbus Blue Jackets also had a 16win streak in the 2016-17 season.
I would hardly classify the 2nd highest winning streak in NHL history as a 'fail'
I always hate when people say “they only won because the goalie played well” like ok? The goalie is on the team. It’s like saying “they only won because their forwards scored more goals” it sounds ridiculous
The story of the Oiler...almost
Glad to see the old record stand, OT and SO wins shouldn't count to break a record from a time where only wins counted
Agreed, only regulation wins should count for winning streak records
The penguins win steak included two overtime wins
A win is a win this is such a dumb coment..
I'm fine with this logic as long as you're not a hypocrite.
Meaning by the same logic the Bruins record from last year shouldn't count as they also got OT/SO points in that 135, which didn't exist when the Habs got 132 in 76.
They don't. There is a big * in front of the Coilers win streak.

The Allstars break killed the streak. Broke their rhythm.
The only thing that pisses me off about this loss is looking at the record and knowing if bettman point’s didn’t exist we would be 2 points back. Why should you be rewarded for losing past regulation?
there should be 2 categories. undefeated streak which counts the Era where ties could end the game, and win streak as of now.
They still made history. What other team has had such a dramatic 180 in performance? People are going to remember this epic run.
Week Edmonton had 10 days off in my opinion the oilers have had to much time off.
That stretch certainly saved their season.
I had to quit watching after Woodcroft’s firing. The hole they dug themselves was immense.
I actually can’t believe they are sitting in a top 10 position right now.
They had too much time and hype pressuring them over the all star break
in those 16 games, the oilers faced such paper thin oponents that it should be it's own analysis. beating only 4 teams above .500, LA mid implosion, the flyers who are an anomaly, the leafs who constantly beat themselves and the rangers; that one was legit, huge win. then you have the sharks, cbj, ducks, hawks, habs and sens at the top of my head. winning 16 straight is hard enough, but you gotta look at the opposition. the streak was never sustainable. the oilers home stretch is even harsher and could prove to bite them for playtoff standings
I love all the idiots trying to downplay what Edmonton did. A 16-game win streak in a professional league is a 16-game win streak. There is a shit-ton of parity in the NHL. It's the 2nd longest streak ever. That's fucking impressive no matter who you are.
Tbh I ain’t too mad about the streak ending. Just happy we’re almost a playoff lock
I think Vegas goes back to back Stanley Cups 🎉
Let's get to the first round. Anything can happen from that point on.
I get, and appreciate, the breakdown.. One small point I though of right off the bat, the Oilers with this 16 game run already made history and should be proud of the work they put in.. longest win streak in the WC, and of any Canadian team.. They're tied for second longest win streak ever.. I mean, that's historic, even if it doesn't beat out the record set by the pengolins.
the oilers have the lowest OT losses at just 1 OT loss. thats pretty damn good considering how bad they started and then the 16 game W streak.
This game feels less like something the Oilers did wrong and more like Hill having one of the best performances of his career.
best hockey channel
Unless they win the cup, the streak wouldn’t have mattered anyway
it wasn't luck that got the Oilers 16 wins. just like it wasn't luck that the B's smashed the highest win streak in NHL history last year. the TEAM went for it, worked well, and played well enough to get those W's. sometimes teams are worn and rusty and the other team just out skates them. it happens. like the B's getting knocked out 1st round.
why it's so crushing to get a big L on the verge of a record is armchair commentators hyping up fairweather fans. at this point literally EVERYTHING in sports is "we could be watching greatness"....when really you're just watching hockey. when your only expectation is "the next..." then you're only in for disappointment. the B's got pretty shaken up by the post season, and they were expected to fall into predictable patterns, a playoff team but just barely. certainly not a contender....and all hope is on Bedard for Chicago....but look at where those 2 teams finished the first 1/2 of the season.
I said it in all the all star game video comments…that the stupid all star break will ruin the momentum of hot teams and/or players and I specifically said that I bet Edmonton will end their streak due to the break.
well it was just one loss, still 16-1 in last 17. also the refs were bad that game
the oilers dominated that game vs vegas too.
Edmonton outplayed Vegas in period 2&3 but Adin was just an absolute wall in net. Edmonton got goalied, they still looked great this game.
Now this is spun as "failure" after just 1 loss right after 16 straight. Sure the record would've been nice but it's still one hell of a streak and seeing how they started out their climb upwards has been amazing.
they climbed from the basement of the league to playoffs spot contention. remarkable turnaround and should be commended all the same

I am a Flames fan and I even wanted to see the Oilers make 17 .
Was rooting for them, but knew Vegas was going to be a huge roadblock
This channel is pretty good.
That isn't fair. The NHL should give them three more first-round picks. Maybe could reverse last year and send Bedard to Edmonton. So they can finally beat this record.
The Oilers got goalied, a story as old as time
I love this content, but I have to point out that tying an NHL record would not have made history.
