Its so interesting the evolution of Edith's character. Her voice placement was defintiely in the lower register early in the series then rose in pitch over the years. Such a brilliant show. Her exchanges with Archie are brilliant. So well written. So well acted.
Her character changed more than anyone else's from the first couple of shows. She's a bit dour here, and got more ding-batty, but more positive, cheerful and loving. I wonder if that was Stapleton's contribution, the writers, Lear, or all 3.

Yes, that's because this was the pilot which also doubled as the first episode of season one. Being from the New York metro area myself, to my mind, Edith had more of an old timey New York Jewish accent here than the old time New York 'Brooklynese' accent she eventually settled on.
This was from season one, Edith was much more assertive than she is in later seasons because the writers changed her into a much more passive and “ding bat” like character.
This was actually the pilot for CBS and was also used as the first episode of season one. The name of the episode if 'Meet the Bunkers.' Norman Lear had shot two previous pilots for ABC in 1968 and 1969. It was basically the exact same episode only with different actors playing the daughter and son in law. Plus the house looked different. It was actually a little nicer than the one they settled on.

Exodus 23:13 prohibits us from taking the names of Pagan deities on our lips. With that in mind, the origin of the term GOD will exempt it from our use. The 1945 Encyclopedia Americana has this to say under to topic "GOD": "GOD (god) Common Teutonic word for personal object of religious worship, formerly applicable to super-human beings of heathen myth; on conversion of Teutonic races to Christianity, term was applied to Supreme Being." Instead of using the word God, We say Alahim is Aibreet (Heb.) for "Mighty One," or a "Ruler, Judge," or someone with power or strength. In most places of Scripture, it refers to The Most High Yahuah.
