Sometimes when the axe head gets stuck in the top of the log your splitting, instead of taking it out , lift it and the log up and slam it down like a hammer. It will split then and it saves slot of time and energy. It will wear a guy out fighting that sunken head out every time. Just give it a try. See what ya think
My mind just kept going no no no you need to keep it in to bust those knots instead of continuously starting over. It's like football, just keep making forward progress.
The trail boss seems excellent for the price. I see a Greenland pattern to it, handle lacks a good bit of beef under the eye. I recommend tapping the top of the axe with a pice of wood when it gets stuck to prevent weakening vthe handle fit. Prevents cracks too. Not too bad, about to order one and see for myself close up
Good axe I heard for the price. With a little work of sanding the handle and taking off the coating on the blade and give good sharpening and think you will have a winner. I still wonder how the blade will hold to the handle for long term use. Then again you can always change the handle.
I wouldn't call the Trail Boss a felling axe and I also wouldn't call it a splitting axe. It's a small camp or back packing axe that will handle many jobs but do non of them as good as a axe designed for said job. And being only around 30 bucks it's a great all around axe for the value. Also if you notice in the background there is a 40 plus pound spilting maul and on the boat trailer I have spilting wedges too. Those being used for the big log spilting duties. This is a review not a how to video. Thanks for watching It's been 8 years since this video and I still have the trail boss and still use it. And again for 30 bucks I beat the crab out of it and she's still going strong.
No it's not specifically designed to be a splitting axe. But any camp axe or hatchet should be able to handle a broad range of tasks and jobs. Like most of my reviews, I'm testing the product. Not making "how to" spilt wood review. I may test to see how well it can do certain tasks and to help answer questions for some. That being splitting, feather sticks, build quality, etc.

They are called barrel wedges
Ah thank you
Jasco for the paint and coating and a wood scrapper for the varnish on the handle then linseed oil the handle.

Tommycod Fish so far the head is staying on the handle with no issue. Been using it for about a year so far
I gonna buy one good price and make a leather sheath for it. Thanks for posting your video.
This axe was meant for cutting down trees not splitting wood. You’re going to break that axe one day if you continue to abuse it that way.
