Laura Nyro (who composed this song) died of ovarian cancer in Danbury, Connecticut, on April 8, 1997, at 49. Brilliant piece. Brilliant woman. But I love what Three Dog Night & producer Gabriel Mekler did with this. Their studio version reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 in Canada's RPM Magazine charts.
Yet for Ms Nyro, it went nowhere as was the case with all her pieces which is why, at age 24, disgusted with the music industry just walked away from it.
You have to understand Three Dog Night takes those songwriters like Paul Williams and Laura Nyro and Hoyt Axton and elevates their stuff to a new level. It's a genius how they put it all together like that. It's not just the vocals, the band had to be absolutely spot on to set that up.

It gave me a little of the time that others were having back home. Helped me to clear my head and get ready for what we could find waiting for us.

Distant memories of this song awakened in my head a couple days ago. Feels like I haven't heard it played in decades. Was trying to remember what band it belonged to. Last night it came to me. I saw TDN perform at the Denver coliseum in 1971...and many other great bands (The Who) there that same year.
My high school band Anniston, AL. played this on the football field as part of our half time show in the early 70's . I was a trombone player in the band at the time.
That place was hell on earth. Open racism everywhere. It's a place so vile that the US Army has a long list of OFF LIMITS local businesses that are openly racist and illegal for soldiers to even visit! I would be embarrassed to admit I was from that den of evil. Shameful AF.
They certainly PERFORMED many anthems. Actually one of the last times the original Three Dog Night performed was the Super Bowl Halftime show in the 1980s

Saw these guys in Memphis TN with James Brown and Black Oak Arkansas in '72. What a combination but it was great.
