Blueberry bushes love pine needles and acidic soil and hydrangeas too. I would just leave the cucumber, maybe move it over to the watermelon side and fertilize it with something with nitrogen, maybe fish emulsion in the garden section and see what happens. I'm finding gardening is trial and error and I learn something new every year. I've only been gardening for three years so still learning. You can try crushing up egg shells and sprinkling it around your plants to help against soft bodied insects.
