    Now that you know how MIDI In, Out, and Thru work, what are some of the creative ways you can think of to connect your electronic instruments? Let us know in the comments, and check out more keyboard and synthesizer lessons here 👉 th-cam.com/play/PLlczpwSXEOybFzNBWKH-43gw_c4qWLv7s.html

    All these years I've been so wrong...
    I've been playing with MIDI since 1990, and I ALWAYS thought that THRU was everything In and ALSO what was generated Locally. I had no idea it was ONLY a copy of what came in, unless specified otherwise. I'm remembering some troubleshooting sessions where I literally was pulling my hair out and eventually gave up. This is probably why... Well, you live, you learn...eventually.

    i had a MIDI handbook that friend from the UK gave back in the 90's and that open up a whole new world for me with MIDI

    Planning a midi solution for 4+ synths, several MIDI controllers and effects pedals, plus MIDI guitar. Hmm...

    Midi Thru I've found to be the key to daisy chaining and MPE controllers. I take 5 behringer synths (two Neutrons, a CAT, a Pro-1 and a Model D) and set them to channels 1 thru 5. I take my Roli Seaboard Rise 49 and set it to Multi Channel Mode, using channels 1 thru 5. If I set them all to pitch bend an octave and set the Roli to an octave bend range, I have a 5 voice BEM (with similar voicings of course) where each BEM can independently pitch bend. Works the same if your sound module is multi-tibmral in a similar function. Set 8 slots in my old TG-33 and I have a Poly AT receptive and Poly pitch bending TG-33.

    Thanks for this, got an Irig midi 2 from Amazon and I'm currently figuring the ins and outs of a roland td4 ekit and a Yamaha keyboard.
    Kids are awestruck, all our minds are blown.
    Thanks for explaining what that 'thru' port does 😂😂😂😂

    Thank you for all your great videos.
    A few questions:
    1/ does it mean that you cannot daisy chain if most of your keyboards have only in/out but not through?
    2/ About midi channel, is there anything to set?
    3/ how to prevent midi in/out to switch the program on the receiver keyboard when you switch it on the controlling keyboard?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi alain.
      1/ If your synths don't have a MIDI Thru you can get a MIDI thru box that has one MIDI In and 2, 4, or 8 MIDI Thru jacks:
      www.sweetwater.com/store/manufacturer/MIDI_Solutions
      2/ You need to make sure that the device with the MIDI Out is on the same MIDI Channel as the device with the MIDI In.
      3/ Some synths have settings that choose what they transmit or don't transmit via MIDI. Some synths have settings that choose what they receive or don't receive via MIDI. If neither do, you can use a box called a MIDI Event Processor (see link above).

      @@sweetwater thanks a lot Daniel ...do you think Arturia BSP or KSP would be a better option ? are they easy to program?

    • @alainszyller615
      @alainszyller615 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      and BSP is not that much expansive than a MIDI event processor and does many other things in addition

    Good. Now you introduce the fact some equipment makers decided to put ‘consumer-friendly’ labels on MIDI sockets, so it was ‘clearer’ a MIDI out, should be connected here. So they labelled MIDI IN as in fact, a MIDI OUT, because that’s meant to be easier for a consumer. In other words, the consumer could just connect the ‘out’ of their keyboard or computer, to the socket marked ‘OUT’ on the device to be connected. So it was just ‘out’ goes to ‘out’. But I think we can agree this is not in fact helpful. There’s also early stuff, the fact some kit worked if chained up in a certain order, but not otherwise. I imagine, all these 1980’s teething issues have settled down by now (I hope). Thanks for your take on clarifying it.

    Do the MIDI cables in and out pass MIDI and audio information, or do you have to connect multiple 1/4 inch lines from each device you're using into line inputs in the interface you're using? I'm assuming since it's MIDI the audio isn't transfered through them.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi KidNovaDaHitMaker. There's never any audio in a 5-pin MIDI connection. Some devices allow audio over USB along with MIDI data, but again, only some. -_Daniel_

    Why are some MIDI splitter boxes mains-powered?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dino Goldie. Some keyboards don't offer DC power from its MIDI connection, even though it's in the MIDI Spec. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

    This is a terrible demonstration, using 3 generic synth-pad sounds makes it so hard to hear what’s going on

    • @spatialfrequency6707
      @spatialfrequency6707 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s true. They should’ve picked very distinct sounds from each synth

  • @youtuup

    nice. Next time use 2 sounds that are EASY to distinct, Now I can't tell what synth is playing and what synth I hear. A bass and Lead would much easier to hear..

    Can't believe you did a MIDI video and didn't even use One pure MIDI controller. That second Hydrasynth could have been replaced by a plain MIDI controller easily, and you could have taken the opportunity to remind people that MIDI does not transmit audio (so many new MIDI users think it does..). Also, you really shouldn't have glossed over the different versions / options that the newer synths and controllers have so dismissively. I see a lot of questions about them on the different MIDI forums. You mention MIDI Thru sometimes being a combined MIDI Out/Thru, but don't even mention the much more common case of only having jacks for MIDI In and Out, and the option to add Thru to the Out jack. Of course, pure MIDI controllers and synths with only MIDI In/Out jacks tend to be gear that's less costly than the ones you _showcased._ The selling never stops, eh? 😛
