Are tyre inflation kits any good...really ?!

  • I'm not a big fan of tyre inflation kits but to be honest until last weekend I'd never had to use one. I thought it would be a good excuse to ask the question...are they any good ?
    On this occasion it was an epic fail. Either because of me not using it correctly or more likely because the tyre was so badly damaged from the puncture.
    On a serious note. What would have happened if I'd been in the middle of nowhere ? I ended up calling a recovery service. Had I had a spare wheel I could have change it in a few minutes and sorted the problem myself.
    I'm still not a big fan !

    This works fine. The sealant bottle needs to be placed in the housing on the compressor as the sealant is gravity fed into the air flow and the car engine needs to be running to preserve the battery. The instructions with the kit and in the car manual are easy to understand. In this case they haven't been read and the procedure is not correct hence the fail. User flaw. I had a puncture this morning from a screw, I used the kit, it worked fine and got me to the garage without need for re-inflation. The puncture was repaired for £15.00. Would have been £10.00 normally but the extra £5.00 was for cleaning the sealant from inside the tyre. I was back on the road within 45 minutes, more than happy. I have been misinformed in comments to these videos that the tyre would need replacing as the sealant renders it useless. This is not the case.

      The tyre does need to be replaced if you've driven on it when it was flat. The damage is inside the tyre and you can't see it easily. Best to replace it as a duff tyre can get you dead.

    Something never looked "right" about those tiny inflatable tyre-things.
    When I discovered my 2013 KIA Optima only had one of those, I ran out asap & ordered an xtra rim and replacement tyre for it as well as the biggest hydraulic jack they make for emergency tyre changing. The flimsy jack that comes with is dangerous to say the least. Now at least the car won't fall off the jack anymore.
    The New Spare Rim and Tyre plus the Hydraulic Jack make the perfect Ballast for my car when Im driving. I always felt pretty light on the road in the past...
    Hope you were able to get that sorted quickly. Flat tyres *anywhere are bad news in general....in the middle of nowhere with a flat is a terrible predicament. Glad You Were close to Civilisation.☺Thank-you for sharing your information!!

    I've used these, they work perfectly well, I'm puzzled as to why you turn on the compressor before you have deployed the foam, the foam cans come pressurised, empty the can into the tyre first, then pump up the tyre.

  • @joeemenaker
    @joeemenaker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I've not seen any reviews (nor anything in the product instructions) about making sure that the tire is rotated such that the puncture at the bottom (so that the sealant finds the hole and can plug it, lest the air keep escaping out the puncture, if it were at the top). Is this a requirement, or does the sealant, somehow, foam up inside of the tire such that it reaches all parts of it?

    I had to use one with my company car, you use it, then you have to drive a litle way inflate, drive a little way, inflate drive etc, bloody dangerous when you are on a motorway miles from an exit, on country road, we dumped our "inflation kits", and bought spare wheels for our compnay cars. i had to give up, with the kit, eventually got someone out, he said, i have nver had a sucess with those kits, as still limited to 80kph 50mph & the tyre is runied after using one anyway, so for a total of 4 hours, meeting missed, soaking wet, cold, , eventually new tyre fitted in a car park I managed to get to, and a bill.£120, (well company) But with a spare wheel, 5 minutes to change, repair bill for punture dropped off a garage near office £20 with a guarantee, they even brought to office & fitted and put spare back. so Inflation Kit = Stupid, costly, Spare wheel = sensible, sensible cost.

    This may sound like a silly question. But if you deliberately deflated a perfectly good tire, and then reinflated the tire using the sealant, would this help prevent future punctures / flat tires ?.

    The only reason these are out is to save the manufaturer money. The gas savings are negligible. If today's spare tire is considered heavy then one should time travel to the 80's or 70's where a full size spare was used. So get a modern spare tire and live in peace.

    We market a Kit from OKO - a UK company specializing in sealants - and the only failure for us has been if the puncture is bigger than 7/8mm! These OEM kits usually seal 3/4mm punctures only. But in any event the Video maker takes a slapdash attitude. RTFM dopey!!

  • @ChristianThomasTring

    It would have been useful to know what was wrong with the tyre. I'm assuming as it was a test, you knew if it was a small nail hole, or a larger hole such as a 5mm chunk taken out by a bolt or something. I think these kits are unlikely to deal with the latter, but if used before the pressure has completely flattened out, could be good enough to get you to a repair.

    TRY READING ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS NEXT TIME? Connect bottle of gunk to compressor, Connect to tyre, Connect to Cigarette lighter, (Invert and slide bottle of gunk into recess on compressor) now switch On compresser as the gunk will empty via gravity into the compressor? I prefer a proper spare but I think you were the problem with this, When you invert and start the pump that is what sends it into the wheel to seal the hole, You failed to do this so the whole of the inside was not covered. What I would like to see is a video of when this tyre was replaced? Because there is obviously a Max sized hole it can fix with a slash being worse

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it was my bad for not reading the instructions properly, but even if I had I don't think it would have worked as the tyre was so badly damaged. The only proper solution is to have a full size spare. Space saver spares are OK but you then have the problem of where to put the wheel you take off !

  • @lehelzelenka207
    @lehelzelenka207 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should start the engine while using the compressor. A car battery has 12 Volts but your alternator generates 13.7 Volts so that increase in Voltage while the engine is running boosts the compressor. Saves you a few minutes if you have a completely flat tyre.

    • @KCnLex
      @KCnLex 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or get a higher Voltage unit that has both car outlet and wall outlet which typically runs it a bit faster. With that small of an air compressor you can't expect one that has even a small gallon sized compressor. Definitely are better ones on the market and if on a dark road, no cell phone connection and otherwise up the creek so the speak I expect it would be worth having. Would benefit from a light on the unit as well to see what you are doing in the dark and the line on it is pretty short.
