Unfortunately the imperial family forced the prince to not chose the woman he loved as his wife therefore she became a side consort (it was a slightly higher rank that a simple concubine however it was still a sad situation for the lovers). Also the fact that the legal wife herself wasn't in love with the prince and was chosen randomly by him it makes the situation even more sad for all 3 people (the prince, the legal wife and the side consort).
