  • Actress Sarah Hyland sat down with Ellen, and divulged what it’s been like dealing with a slew of health issues, including endometriosis and gout, for the past few years. The 28-year-old discussed her two kidney transplants, dealing with depression, working through pain while filming “Modern Family,” and shared what helped her get over her suicidal thoughts.

      most people with depression look like they're working and living like healthy people. it is kind of an imitation of what other people expect from them. until the moment.

    She said that she got herself out of depression and stuff, but not everyone can do that, and it’s ok to ask for help and get help in those situations.

      That is still you get yourself out of depression. No one else can call a therapist for you etc.

      Single Mum Hustle I think you have a good point, but some people might not want to get a therapist, so I was saying that’s it’s ok to talk to a therapist. Also for children and teens that are struggling with anxiety and depression it’s really hard (in most cases) to talk to your parents. And for people that are underaged they can’t usually sign themselves up for therapy. But I get what your saying.

    • @geekista
      @geekista 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I think she meant that making peace with herself is what got her out of depression. And well, I know what I am talking about, I see a therapist, i have a great support system. But at the end of the day, I am the only one who can pull myself out of this spiral. I dont know if that makes sense lol

    This is so amazing. If you are ever struggling with mental illness speak out!! Speak out to somebody you trust and get the help that you don’t just need but the help that you deserve. You are such a strong person and I know from experience how hard talking about how you’re feeling is but if you are strong enough to fight that voice in your head everyday you are strong enough to speak out to a family member, friend, doctor, therapist or just one person that you trust. The more we talk about mental illness the more people will start to understand what it’s actually like and the more we will get the treatment we deserve!! This rough patch will find a place in your life and you are going to make it through as the strong, courageous, amazing person you are 💕💕

      Not everyone has a support system. Many are very much alone. Chronic conditions are isolating and can perpetuate the depression, anxiety and loneliness associated with physical and behavioral healh.

    • @kathylewis2484
      @kathylewis2484 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Kenna C.
      I absolutely agree with you. Sometimes finding that 'someone' can be one of the largest barriers to getting the help needed. For some people they have more support than they realize...as they may be embarrassed or ashamed but in the end the ones they confide in are not judgemental like he or she had feared. Hotlines and support groups are options too. Just sometimes in the depth of despair it really feels like you are alone but you're not. That first step of reaching out can be the hardest.
      My heart goes out to those that are truly alone...no friends or family...sometimes the elderly can be really vulnerable and without family or friends due to the years of isolation and the loss of loved ones.
      We have to reach out for help otherwise we just stagnate and our problems grow.
      I'm glad you have found support that helps you. I wish you great success, joy and happiness! Take care of yourself!

    Living with chronic issues is very hard, it's hard to try & get everyone to understand you.
    I have chronic fatigue syndrome that comes along with a sleep disorder, anxiety, depression, constant pain & many other things.
    It really hard knowing you can't do a lot simple things like washing the dishes.
    Hope is alive & doesn't expire.

    I find it so amazing how when I saw her for the filmings in Disney World during the moments they weren’t filming she was all giggly but I saw she was a very strong person! Like I talked with her once she was finished filming for the night (this was at 3:00am!) and I just went up to her and told her how much she inspires me... and just to see her talking about this kind of stuff shows me how extremely strong she really is. Absolutely love this strong woman

    Being a chronic pain sufferer, she hit the nail on the head. You just want to feel good once in a while and not feel pain all the time. And saying your thoughts about suicide to someone really does make it sound ridiculous in the big picture. Sarah you are awesome.

    This is amazing! I had no idea and she was such a different character on screen. And what she says is true! Talking about it out loud and owning your truth does help. It’s especially comforting when you see that you are not alone and that others have got out of that space before. I’ve tried 4 times and my last one was a gun shot wound to my stomach, after surgery and being in a psych ward for weeks, mainly meditating on my own, I was able to come out of it. And writing this comment will help me stay out of it. Love is life!

    This hit close to home. I recognize the struggle, trying to seek help, to talk about it, but also seeing you’re the only one that can enact change...
    She is right to say that every experience is personal though. For some hearing that only them can save themselves is empowering. But for me more often than not it makes me feel worse, since depression makes me see myself as worthless, and so it doesn’t make me want to live or fight. And it makes me feel like it’s wrong to talk about it since it’s my own business.

    I'm so sorry to hear of Sarah's struggles with suicidal thoughts and so happy she's here to talk about them! My son was the same way. He kept his intentions well hidden and didn't show any signs, which were very few, until right before he died from suicide. Of course, now I know what those signs were, but due to extenuating circumstances, they were seen as something else. It's hard to find someone to take you seriously and understand that you are in pain. Maybe your family rathers to deny to themselves that this is happening to you because of how painful that would be to admit. However you deserve to find that someone, so search for a professional that can help you and listen to you.
