  • In this video we look at the effectiveness of the old East German camouflage commonly known as "Rain Camo" in a woodland environment in the fall/winter season.

    This pattern is surprisingly effective. Without a lot of cover it's easy to make your silhouette, but when this stuff kicks in, it kicks in hard. I imagine it would be just as good in summer because there would be more foliage and the neutral tones would absorb local colour well. Thanks for these videos. You clearly put a lot of effort into them and they are a great aid in evaluating different patterns.

    Y'know, though another viewer said he picked you out almost every time, I am surprised at how effective this camo is. I think he picked you out because he KNEW you were in the pic, and with a limited amount of places to hide, it was easier for someone who ALREADY knew you were there. If I didn't know you were there, I doubt I'd have picked you out more than a couple of times, if that. If you remain motionless, and aren't wearing something that absolutely clashes with your background it is damn hard to pick out someone trying to not be found. Again, the camo does what it is designed to do! The colors are remarkably similar to those in the background, and what little pattern there is, does a good job of providing some "texture" to the camo. The result is pretty good, if you don't expect camo perfection from the pattern.

      Kevin Schmidt My apologies if that's the case. Before I filmed this video I had looked online for some examples of E. German troops and I had seen some pictures of some troops with their pants tucked in. The first place I saw it was in this video th-cam.com/video/lOWeetgrq_w/w-d-xo.html (At 11:39&11:49 in that video).

    • @ngm8171
      @ngm8171 9 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Hello Brent, no need for apologies.
      I'm sure in the video it deceives.
      The trousers in the video are only moved up outside the boot. This sometimes happend if you move fast. If your Uniform is an original, please check: As far as I remember there was a flap outside on the real end of each leg and two plastic bottons (on the ankle side of the leg). So you could fix the trousers leg loose or more tight around the boot. Please have a closer look. ... If you choose the wider variant something like in the video easily happen, But normally the leg did not move more upwards then the boot length...
      This is out of my memory (25years ago now :-) )
      It could be that there where also uniform variants with only one botton.
      I'm sorry but I'm too lazy right now to got to the basement and check my old uniform...
      BTW Did you find the pocket for the pistol at the jacket? (left breast side?)
      ahh found something: you can see moved upwards but still outside. all the others always over the boots. (it was forbidden to put them inside)

    Brent you have the best camouflage demo videos on youtube, I love East German Strichtarn for a simple two color pattern it's very versatile infact it predates multicam by about 50 years. It would be kinda cool if you found some of the Czech/Slovak "rain camo", it's a little more "complicated" pattern. The "rain" is lighter brownish-red and there are "flecks" of greenish in the camo, it' fairly common, but if not, I do have some parkas in it I could loan or sell you. The "woodland" Czech/Slovak is neat too, obvious ERDL influences.

  • @SavageShooter93
    @SavageShooter93 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I would have to say overall its a decent color scheme and pattern, as long as you are properly using it.
    Every single example except for the 3rd one (the first shot with the creek) I was able to almost immediately pick out your hiding position, Either it jumped out at me instantly or with one quick scan of the area I saw something that didnt look right.
    To clarify, I never saw something that could clearly be identified as a person hiding, but I could always see something that didnt look right, and in a situation where you are looking for guys in camo anything that doesnt look right is a threat.
    That being said I was easily able to spot you because I was looking for you and I knew you were there somewhere. and the one time I couldnt, The First River shot I saw two things that didnt look quite right and I guessed thats where you were, but I still got it wrong. The "effectiveness" of the pattern in that example was more of a demonstration of the effectiveness of using concealment and terrain properly. The pattern you are wearing isnt as important at that point. Im sure you would have been just as well hidden wearing ATACS or Multicam.
    So overall I would have to say its a great surplus buy, I dont think any modern pattern could have done much better, and with some proper use of camo techniques and proper use of the terrain for an ambush you could literally melt into the surroundings wearing that.
    I realize that you were just showing the camo pattern, not doing an exercise in field camo, and ambush tactics, so Im not trying to say you were doing it wrong. Quite the opposite, By just going out and laying in various surroundings without building a concealment position around you you demonstrated the camo perfectly. you showed it just by itself in natural surroundings.
    Great Vid man

    Not bad. At this point, the reddish wood of the gun is the strongest visual giveaway. Black plastic furniture would be better. Something gray or earth toned even better than that.
    The light skin of your face is then the next feature that sticks out most from a distance. Face paint or a light mesh face mask would help enormously.

      +Greg Weber I have a cheap infrared night vision camera with illuminator and it does fantastically against it. Even the web gear is dull and drab without being too light or dark.

    Can you get some russian digital flora.. The kind they are using in Ukraine. It looks like it has a small digital grouping with spread out pixels so I don't know if it is effective in breaking up the human shape. I think you can get the whole uniform for around $80

      @danktank9971 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah im kind of skeptical about it. it looks like there is a tannish pattern and an olive pattern looks like it works well in grass id like to see how effective it is in woodland environments though

    • @danktank9971

    I never understood the purpose of the tiny vertical lines. It just seems pointless as it's barely noticeable until you get extremely close. It doesn't have anything too disruptive about it.
