Wow, this really is actually live. It's great when pop culture groups like this get to show that they really could play and weren't just studio concoctions.
I WAS 15 YEARS OLD IN 1975 AND I REMEMBER THIS SONG AS IF WERE FROM LAST YEAR. I LOVE IT ! TOO MUCH TALENT AND FEELING THE SINGERS OF THOSE DAYS. R.I.P. BO DONALDSON.
Loved Mike and Rick. Great voices. Great personalities. RIP. Hugs to all the other band members other than Bo Ego Donaldson. Musically talented but he and his mom...really considered themselves Special Someones. Pass.
God bless him and you and your family. But we really do need heroes and though I liked this song I never agreed with its message. It was a cynical time, and this was a cynical message.
I loved Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods. My first concert was them and they opened for The Osmonds . I went and saw them when ever they were in Ohio and watched them when ever they were on tv. They don't make music like that and the Osmonds anymore unfortunately. I was 14 in 74
I have a deep respect for all the Heywoods except Bo. I met him at an airport in the late 90s and he insulted my then wife’s speech impediment. I was speechless and attributed it to jet lag, but it is still an unpleasant memory.
On this day in 1975 {January 4th} Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods performed "Heartbreak Kid" on the ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... One month earlier on December 8th, 1974 "Heartbreak Kid" peaked at #39 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Top 100 chart, and it spent a total of seven weeks on the Top 100... Between 1972 and 1975 the Cincinnati, Ohio sextet had five records on the Top 100 chart, one made the Top 10 and it reached #1, "Billy, Don't Be A Hero", for two weeks on June 9th, 1974... Besides "Heartbreak Kid" and "Billy, Don't Be A Hero", their three other Top 100 records were "Special Someone"* {#64 in 1972}, "Who Do You Think You Are" {#15 in 1974}, and "Our Last Song Together" {#95 in 1975}... * For "Special Someone" the Family Productions record label was simply 'The Heywoods'...
I remember being 11 years old and pouring through the TV Guide each week hoping to see that you guys were going to be on TV the following week. Good times,
Man what a find....so much energy in this group. Heartbreak Kid was one of my favorite songs back in the day. Skating ring music LOL. That blonde had some great moves!!!1
I was a huge fan of this group and I believe this is the only time I've seen and heard the original guys live! "The Heartbreak Kid" was one of my very favorites, so what a treat this is! Thank you so much for posting! The other single written by Michael Price and Dan Walsh, "Deeper and Deeper", your first on ABC, is one of my all-time favorite songs by anybody, and should've been a smash. That one gets me every time!
What the heck, I've always wanted to tell this publicly. Your first hit, "Special Someone", was a song I loved instantly. My favorite group was The Grass Roots, and that song reminded me a lot of them. In fact, it sounded quite a bit like one of their hits, "Heaven Knows", which was written by a team that wrote a lot of hits for the Roots, including "Temptation Eyes", Michael Price and Dan Walsh. Around one year later, you are signed to the same label as the Grass Roots, being produced by their producer Steve Barri, and having songs written for you by none other than... Price and Walsh! Yeah, I knew you were right where you belonged! And it was very fortuitous team-up for the Heywoods!
I had so much hope for this channel to post more videos but it's been 5 years and sadly it looks like it has been retired. I will ever get to see a video to my favorite song, "Teenage Rampage", which was a big hit in my area in 1976. I got to see them at a local fair that year as well.
Loved that video. Heartbreak Kid was a great song. Too bad it didn't do that well on the charts. The "Billy" album had a ton of great songs on it but that was the only one I owned. Love "Hang Your Lamp" and many others. I wonder if the other albums are available somewhere. I have the Greatest Hits CD and is is excellent.
Does anyone know of a video from when they were on the Dinah Shore show? I remember that they got interviewed at did Heartbreak KId. I remember it having choreography. I think there were audience questions.
Great ! Thank you for posting this ! Your group was outstanding !!!! Where is this show from ? I'm able to deduce its in Ohio during Xmas season of 74 but that's as far as I can figure.
I have this on their Greatest Hits CD. Was this song ever on an album? I have the second album with "Billy..." and "Who Do You think You Are?" and it's very good. I was thinking about buying the first and 3rd records on Ebay since they are not available on I-tunes. Any feedback on those albums? Were there any others?

I remember buying the forty-five record at Sam Goody in Kings Plaza Brooklyn in the 1970's of this song. Very popular.

Such a sad song, especially because my brother was killed in Vietnam .
God bless him and you and your family. But we really do need heroes and though I liked this song I never agreed with its message. It was a cynical time, and this was a cynical message.

I cant believe Mike Gibbins and Rick Joswick have passed so sad
They were young 50 years ago. Did you really expect them to live forever? Everyone has their time. Its called life. RIP 🙏❤️
I remember being 11 years old and pouring through the TV Guide each week hoping to see that you guys were going to be on TV the following week. Good times,
I remembering doing that to! I was in love with Bo, now I think I should
Of went after Rick!
I did too Sherry !
Omg!! The Bob Braun Show! This show was a Cincinnati classic…just like this song!!
Man what a find....so much energy in this group. Heartbreak Kid was one of my favorite songs back in the day. Skating ring music LOL. That blonde had some great moves!!!1
"That blond" is Rick Joswick. He also had a unique and incredible voice.
The heart break kid is my favorite video of the Heywoods. I love Mike's energy his cute face expressions and how sweet he is.. Loved you Mike !
This was a great group.

This made me smile today! I loved The Heartbreak Kid and had such a crush on Mike Gibbons and Nicky Brunetti. Thanks for sharing.
Story songs are the best !
RIP Mike Gibbons, Rick Joswick, Mike Douglas
That's not Mike Douglas, that is Bob Braun. He too, however, is deceased.
That is the late, great, Bob Braun, a legend in Cincinnati television.
Vince Gibbons of WJAR NBC10 Providence Rhode Island who was a field reporter/weekend anchor in the 1970’s was Mike Gibbons’ brother.
Really Live thank the host and Thankyou for posting

What do you mean it didn't do well on the charts? It was the Billboard #1 song of 1974.
Oh...I thought you were saying BILLY didn't do that well. Sorry.
The original song was by a UK band named Paper Lace!
Does anyone know of a video from when they were on the Dinah Shore show? I remember that they got interviewed at did Heartbreak KId. I remember it having choreography. I think there were audience questions.
BOB BRAUN!
Great ! Thank you for posting this ! Your group was outstanding !!!!

This was from the Bob Braun show broadcast live every weekday from Cincinnati

No, "The Heartbreak Kid" was never on an album. Just a nice picture sleeve 45.
La voz es más o menos igual pero la música nada que ver con la de estudió, yo me quedo con la versión de estudio
paper lace is better at singing this song and its billy,s wife that has put this on here and I think paper lace are all sexy from Sammy
