Yes it really is. A top 10 for me with great performances all around. I have watched it over and over again for the performances of Robert Morse, Rudy Vallee, Michelle Lee and the whole cast. What great songs and choreography. The sexism is so comically portrayed with songs like 'A secretary is not a toy', lyrics such as 'her pad is to write in, and not spend the night in'. Clever all the way through and never let's up.
To see him this young again is strange. Since he's in "Mad Men Series for the past years. He is appreciative of being in this show after so many years. Haven't seen him in years. Perhaps he's done a lot of plays on Broadway and other shows.
I always like Robert Morse since I was a kid and saw him in a traveling show in Phila in the 80's but the thing I loved best about him was in a PBS broadcast of "Tru" there is a scene where he dances briefly and kicks his leg up above his shoulder (in his 60's!) and my wife loved it too. And of course "How To Succeed"... Love that guy.
Morse is one of the greats. He has the cool, clear eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth, yet there's that upturned chin, and the grin of impetuous youth. Is the film they are discussing at the end here "The Loved One" (which is fabulous)? I first remember watching him on TV in "That's Life", a musical comedy sitcom that was before it's time and was too quickly cancelled. He somehow manages to combine goofy and suave to make something that is uniquely charming and adorable. I believe in you, Bobby Morse!
I didn't watch Madmen from the beginning .. but I've since caught up and I am glued when it's on ... and sad to see it's ending .. I recognized that face( Robert Morse ) immediately .. asked my wife "Don't you know who he is??" she said no .. to whohc I replied .. you couldn't turn on a TV in the med 60's to mid 70's and NOT see him
Robert Morse was cute back in the day. I finally saw the film version of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". With all due respect to Matt Broderick, Dan Radcliffe, Darren Criss, Nick Jonas, and every other actor who has ever played the role, Robert Morse is THE J. Pierrepont Finch.
Very true, but the only regret is it took so long to make the movie after he established his “ownership” of the role. He’s great in the movie, but slightly old for the part, so you have to imagine him a few years younger to get the effect; same thing by the way with the seductive secretary character in the film, but to much more extreme extent. She was like 20 years (at least, possibly even 30!) too old for that role, but I give the director/producers credit for giving it to her on acting ability rather than looks, which would never, ever happen today. They have a woman with no extant (i.e., aged out of any) sex appeal a seductress role, which was completely generous and courageous on their part. She probably had the role on Broadway a decade earlier, I’m guessing. Mr. Morse is fantastic as the lead, but really the character should be like 20 or early 20’s, not 30-40 range. He seems easily 40 in the picture. But as in the secretary case, they made the film all about the talent and the story, not the physical attributes of the cast, which is to their extremest CREDIT, in so many ways the OPPOSITE of how things are done today. Even though he’s a bit old for the part, Mr. Morse absolutely *towers* in the film, an absolutely glorious performance worth every second.
Without a DOUBT. One of those situations where the originator of the role makes every successor look bad in comparison because they were just *that perfect* for it.

Boy, I've been watching Man Men for the last three years and never realized Robert Morse was playing Bert Cooper; and I loved him in How to Succeed in Business Without really trying. I'm glad he got such a wonderful role.
I want a show like this back on television so bad. It is so darling. How To Succeed in Business (Without Really Trying) holds up in a way that it never should have. It is the quintessential representation of corporate sexism. But damn is the music good in it. Watch it if you never have.
Coming from the UK I had no idea of his background. Hard to equate the vigorous young man here with the much older bearded sage so wonderful in Mad Men. Old age eh?
You have to be kidding, Robert was extremely famous in the 1960’s, just because there is a whole new generation that is being introduced to him it doesn’t mean he wasn’t as famous or even more so 50 years ago.

Saw his performance of Tru in San Francisco back in 1990. Phenomenal, also met up with him backstage and wished him well with the new baby he and Libby would have soon. Very genuine and gracious. 💕

But I am well aware of Bobby Morse, used to watch him on the ABC-TV series "That's Life!" when I was a kid, which was also where I first saw comedian Rodney Dangerfield.
I was in NYC in March 1967 (12 years old). My uncle was an entertainment editor for a magazine and he sent all the kids to see the reporter's showing of How To Succeed. That was probably a few weeks before this broadcast, because it hadn't been released in theaters yet. This show was probably taped la little more than a year before Bobby Kennedy was killed.

Pamela Tiffin and Arlene Francis starred in a 1961 Billy Wilder film called "One Two Three", alongside James Cagney and Horst Buchholz, I believe. One of the greatest Cold War comedies. Cagney is Coca-Cola's man in West Berlin, Francis is his wife, Tiffin is a Coke exec's wild child from Atlanta, and Buchholz is the East German Commie who knocks her up and marries her. Cagney is not pleased.
I was going to bring that up myself, had I not found your comment. Back in the days of VHS tape, I had collected 3 films I very much enjoyed on one tape. "One Two, Three," "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," and Disney's original "The Parent Trap." The latter two, coincidentally, having the same director, the late David Swift. You can spot him in "How to Succeed," as the elevator operator who tells Michelle Lee, "Rosemary! In or Out! I have other clients, you know!" He and Haley Mills have a wonderful commentary track on the Parent Trap DVD.
Bobby definitely was the very best Truman Capote! Nailed it in 'Tru'. A natural on the stage! (Broadway) Did and outstanding job in Mad Men as the irrassable Bert Cooper.
I first heard about him when I was in jr high school and looked him up in a copy of Current Biography, one of those green hard backed books. They had described him as "a head-on collision between John F. Kennedy and Mickey Rooney"!

In 1963, I saw and heard Robert Morse sing "I Believe In You" on the stage, opposite Dyan Cannon, in "How To Succeed, etc." in Pasadena.

I thought he had died back in the 1990s, like 1998 or so, because I "remember" my dad being sad that he had passed away. It surprised me several months ago when I looked on IMDB and read that he was still alive! I have had some Nelson Mandela Effect experiences.

Pamela Tiffin and Arlene Francis starred in a 1961 Billy Wilder film called "One Two Three", alongside James Cagney and Horst Buchholz, I believe. One of the greatest Cold War comedies. Cagney is Coca-Cola's man in West Berlin, Francis is his wife, Tiffin is a Coke exec's wild child from Atlanta, and Buchholz is the East German Commie who knocks her up and marries her. Cagney is not pleased.

"One Two, Three," "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," and Disney's original "The Parent Trap." The latter two, coincidentally, having the same director, the late David Swift. You can spot him in "How to Succeed," as the elevator operator who tells Michelle Lee, "Rosemary! In or Out! I have other clients, you know!" He and Haley Mills have a wonderful commentary track on the Parent Trap DVD.
