This amazing song always puts a lump in this old man's throat. Your version is technically fantastic and emotionally heartfelt. I think ol' Lefty just heard it somewhere out in the ether... and he shed a tear of regret...
oh thats amazing! I wish I could do it like you, sir! Picked up the guitar again just to try to learn this song..... I'm practicing Dust In The Wind, to buff my skills up to play Pancho & Lefty. Too difficult for me sadly. But I can make it "work" with open chords around a camp fire. Amazing cover, this is what I pray/aspire to be able to play like. You nailed it. Consider doing a lesson for us folks? Again, great cover. peace and music
First off thanks for listening! Keep practicing and i promise you’ll get there. Start by slowly learning travis picking with ear training and youtube tutorials. As you gain more coordination and speed it will eventually “click.” Thanks again for the kind words
Holy fuck man! Unbelievable. I’m a huge Townes fan and that was amazing. I’ve been playing for a few years. Starting to learn Travis picking. It’s going to be tough but I practice quite a bit. Again, very nice work.
I've been working through a few TVZ songs this last two years and your covers are the best out there. Mike's Music Method and you are my go-to sources for trying to learning this stuff. Thank you for filming both hands! Now do some Guy Clark songs!
I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel the other day. Fantastic covers of one of my all time favorite musicians, and fantastic motivation for me to keep practicing to maybe be able to do something close to what you’re doing some day. Until then I’ll keep listening to your versions next to Townes’ ones!
Thanks so much for listening man! I’m glad you enjoy them. Keep practicing you’ll get there took me awhile as well. With the Townes stuff you’ll find you hit a point where it starts to “click.” Best of luck man!
So good! Best cover I’ve seen of this song. How long did it take to get the picking right? And is there any recommendations for how you eventually achieved it?
thank you! the picking pattern is travis picking, which is the main technique townes used. it took probably six months to get good enough where i could sing along. my advice is to start slow and focus on the thumb pattern before incorporating other fingers. there are plenty of tutorials on youtube, but i also learned a lot by listening to recordings and figuring things out by ear. it will also depend on your playing experience. i'd been playing for years by the time i started playing townes stuff so it probably shortened the learning curve. that said, it's an awesome style to learn and translates well to many genres, so definitely worth the time. i hope this helps and thanks for listening!
Good job. This pattern is not so easy to play than its sounds like, and you sing the story with feeling. I also like the Steve Earle Version very much, though its more different from the original
Great cover Max! I have always preferred towns live unplugged versions the best, does that travis technique you used on this just use the one finger for the melody? Sounds spot on both singing and playing well done 👍 looking forward to more Townes covers, maybe for a change in fingerpicking style blaze’s blues by Townes be good to see...
thanks man! and yeah usually i just use my first finger for picking the melody. pretty sure townes used the first two though. feel free to check out my other townes covers!
Fantastic vocal, picking… and the correct lyrics! Thank you; no lazy “slip away”s everywhere.
Thanks for listening man!
