    Misleading info here: Architectural Engineering (AE)is the design of building engineering systems; Electrical, Mechanical, and Structural Engineering. Architectural engineers do not do Architecture and are legally not supposed to say that they are architects. They are also not trained in aesthetics unless they decide to take an elective. AE's have an intense education specific for building system design. There are only a handful of accredited architectural engineering programs across the country.

      I have a five year bachelor of science degree in architecture and in California by law I can’t even use any form of the word architect in the name of my company or even describe myself as an architectural graduate. But there’s gazillions of engineers out there and they don’t have to be licensed to call them self an audio engineer or whatever engineer and yet structural engineers are what keeps buildings from falling down and killing people. I guess architects are better lobbyists of politicians that write the laws. I emphasized the structural design part of courses in getting my architectural degree and I even took some very difficult elective classes in the engineering department like indeterminate structures. When I graduated I worked as a structural engineer, although not licensed, in a firm that had licensed engineers. Then I went to work for Skidmore Owens and Merrill that, at the time I believe, was the only architecture firm in the world to have their own in-house structural engineers. My boss had worked on the design for Sears Tower in Chicago. I found following a TH-cam channel Of a guy that has built a couple of RV conversions of vans and now goes around interviewing other RV converters about their designs that and he’s very knowledgeable about the solar, electrical inversion, etc. systems but I wouldn’t hire him for a minute For his aesthetic sensibility, But he still refers to himself as a designer. I would not call him a designer in the artistic sense of the word. he’s got the aesthetic sensibility of an engineer. Not good. With my educational and work background and life experience I have both. At least in my time there were very few architecture students that were seriously interested in structural design classes and only one other one took the indeterminate structures class. It is fairly unusual I think to have people who are interested and good at aesthetics set her also interested in learning Engineering to the degree that they are competent to design the structure of buildings. Even when they are just designing the structure of wood framed buildings of limited height I’ll bet they consult with structural engineers on parts of it. Nobody wants to be sued out of business because someone dies due to a structural design mistake. even licensed structural engineers make mistakes

    I suggest students interested in the AE career path make sure they clearly understand the differences.
    AE is one of the most understood engineering disaplines. Often I (a licensed Architectural Engineer, PE) am approached by electrical, mechanical and civil engineers who are confused about what architectural engineers. AE's are very rare and naturally intimidate traditional building engineers civil, electrical and mechanical engineers because AE's can engineer all building systems under one roof.

      ??I still can't understand what architecture engineer do
      do you design the whole system for the building ??
      then what will structural, electrical and mechanical engineers do ??
      i mean where i live , as an architect , the architect defines the space for services as part of the design process because you can't just separate an essential part of the space design (electrics and mechanics ) from the aesthetics and spatial needs of that space !!
      it doesn't make sense , i just don't think that there should be architects and architectural engineers it makes thing more messy than they already are !!!

      Respectfully, on the contrary, Architectural Engineers make the whole process streamlined and simplified. Architectural Engineers are State Licensed Professional Engineers. Architectural Engineers specialize in building engineering systems exclusively. You see Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineers are only using maybe 1/3 or their background education in engineering of buildings. For example, if you take a look at the college curriculum (courses) for electrical engineers you will see out of possibly 25 or 30 courses only 2 may be applicable to buildings and the remainder is for computers, electronics, electrical devices and controls, ... When you look at the curriculum for architectural engineers 100% of the courses are focused on buildings. There is an argument within the profession that electrical, mechanical, and civil engineers be stripped of their abilities to seal building engineering drawings. I have owned my own architectural engineering company since 2008 and in this time I have had to train electrical, mechanical, and civil engineers to expand on their limited backgrounds and think in terms of how buildings are designed. To give an analogy, if you were having heart problems and on the edge of having a heart attack, would you go to your general physician who has limited knowledge of the heart or would you go to a cardiologist who is a heart specialist. Sure your general physician will have something to say but would you bet your life on it? Architects working directly with architectural engineers make the most profits because Architectural Engineers speak their language so there are far less communication issues. I personally have a degree in architecture as well so really I don't lack when it comes to building design. I am not sure what propagated your questions, Perhaps you are a inspiring student seeking advice or already a professional in the building construction industry, either way I respect your questions. They are questions that I constantly are answering because Architectural Engineering is a unique and specialized field and not too many people know about. There are only a hand full of architectural engineering schools across the country; I attended the University of Kansas. below I will give you a link to the program there and another link to NCEES. I sincerely hope my response helps you. Feel free to contact me again if you have any questions. Have a great weekend.

      Hi Ali, if you want to focus only on buildings my suggestion would be to enroll in an architectural engineering school. Keep in mind that architectural engineers need to take studio course for 3 or 4 years. The studios are in sequence so no matter how far along you are in civil you will likely have to start from 1st year studio. Most of your civil - structural courses will likely transfer but you will need to spend another 4 or 5 years in AE school.

    Architect engineering is not materials engineering. The capacities of materials used in building engineering systems are given to Architectural Engineers (AE) from material scientists, researchers and statisticians, typically in the form of tables. AEs use these tables only if the Code allows, then materials can specify materials for each building engineering system. It's that simple. AE's just don't have time to be material engineers and scientists. AEs may weigh in on material design I.e. request lighter concrete with same or better structural capacity or chemical resistance.

      @@ellaassa4799 University of Kansas is where I went to school. However today I believe they don't have the same exact program. University of Texas at Austin and University of Colorado at Boulder also have the program. I think there are about 15 schools that have an accredited program. If you are interested in one particular discipline like electrical engineering of buildings you can get an electrical engineering degree and a separate architecture degree at many universities which would be somewhat comparable which can lead you to licensure in both architecture and engineering down the road. Hope this helps.

      @@savageman8717 Calatrava was an artist/sculptor first then got a degree in Architecture and then a degree in Civil Engineering (not Architectural Engineering). In my opinion, most architectural engineers can not do what Calatrava has done. Even if the architectural engineer had the same formal education as Calatrava, they will never have his unique artistic perspective but might be able to simulate it to some degree. My advice, if you want to design some really cool looking stuff, you need to find your own style first by way of finding your own artistic style then branch out for secondary education to support your unique artistic style.

    @JJ García Rühland ,,,, dear
    I don't know why you speak of AEs while your are not one of them !!!!
    AE have design studio each semester, this studio is divided to two parts, half of semester we do architecture design from A to Z... then the second half is for engineering design, like STR and energy design, and we take small part of the building ( room or two) to make HVAC and ELEc design very schematically to have an idea only... to make our architecture design coordinated.
    we work better when it come to technical aspects, while architects do better in design aspects...
    but that doesn't mean that we can't work as architecture designers, same as ton of architects who are working in technical, building technologies, engineering, urban planning, landscaping and interior designers.
    I have bachelor and doing my master in AE, and I am licensed architect and architecture engineer, and I am working as and architect in one of well recognized architecture firm and within one of the biggest projects on the world.

    Santiago Calatrava is not an architectural engineer, he is a structural engineer with artistic and architecture knowledge. To say Calatrava's work is architectural engineering is incorrect. Calatrava was originally known as a bridge designer, aka Civil Structural Engineer (not AE). For example, Calatrava does not do the electrical or mechanical engineering design of a building. He shapes buildings and bridges with structural knowledge and artistic aptitude. I love his work but he is not an architectural engineer.

      +JJ García Rühland for what I know, Santiago Calatrava took architecture first and civil engineering was his 2nd degree. He is practicing structural engineering as a specialization of civil engineering. My question is this: If you have a degree of AE, are they allowed to sign and seal architectural or civil engineering documents or both? Since architecture and CE are distinctive and regulated professions, are they qualified to practice one of them or both? If you use the title, "Architectural Engineer" can they also be addressed as architects? Can they also be addressed as structural engineers? Is an Architectural Engineering a distinct profession from architecture and engineering or is it a specialization? Thanks for your feed back and hope these clarifies.

    • @GarciaJustinBArchPE
      @GarciaJustinBArchPE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Architects and Architectural Engineers are different. Licensed Architectural Engineers nor any other profession can call themselves "Architects" unless they have an architecture degree, did the required internship, and passed the architecture exam. Architectural Engineers are the engineers of the building (Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical systems). A Civil Engineer overlaps architectural engineers in their training when it comes to the structural design of the building. Civil Engineers however are not specialists in buildings... their structural engineering training is spread thin because they also learn about civil projects (highways, bridges... ). As an Architectural Engineer I can design a little beyond the building i.e. parking lot. However, I choose to hire a Civil Engineer to do that because that is more in their wheelhouse. I have a degree in Architecture as well so I am even more-so a building person. Many engineers work on buildings Electrical, Mechanical, and Structural (Civil) but these degrees don't specialize in buildings like Architectural Engineers do. For example Electrical Engineers get a 4 year Electrical Engineering degree. The electrical engineering degree curriculum in college has courses in computer electronics, micro circuits, ....basically a lot of electrical courses not related to buildings at all. Only a small slice of the electrical engineering curriculum is focused on power design which is used in buildings, however even this slice is not saturated with the electrical engineering of buildings. I have worked with several electrical engineer graduates and their knowledge out of college about building power and lighting systems is very limited compared to the electrical system design curriculum in Architectural Engineering. Keep in mind also that Architectural Engineers take courses side by side with architects where as Electrical Engineering Grads do not take courses side by side with architects. Same goes for Mechanical Engineer Grads and Civil Structural Grads. If you specifically want to focus on buildings then it is a no-brainer go with architectural engineering. If you want to focus on both the engineering and architecture of buildings you will need to get both the architectural engineering degree and architecture degree. Make sure both degrees are accredited so that you are on track to get your license. I have known Civil engineers that wanted to design buildings however they never knew there was an architectural engineering degree so today they find themselves designing highways, hydrolic systems, parking lots, bridges etc. which is not what they wanted to focus on. To save time and frustration in the future (assuming you want to focus on buildings) go the architectural engineering route. Hope this helps.

      +JJ García Rühland Thank you for your reply. Just to add some questions that you did not mention about plumbing, sanitary engineering and fire protection. I believe that these disciplines are included because they are part of building engineering especially in a large scale projects. Are these part of Architectural Engineering curriculum or is it already integrated in Mechanical/Electrical utility systems? If you can provide me a link of your architectural engineering curriculum, please let me know the link. Thank you.

      Typically structural and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) is grouped into Architectural Engineering. Typically you can take electives to cover fire, solar, acoustics... Yes, they are all architectural engineering because they fall under engineering systems of buildings. Hope this helps.
