How to Run an Email Server with Mail-in-a-Box (on a VPS)

- Learn how to setup your own email server with Mail-in-a-box in this tutorial that will use Vultr hosting as an example. While some DNS configuration is necessary, Mail-in-a-box takes care of most of this for you behind the scenes.
While this tutorial uses Vultr, you can use my affiliate links to host your own email server with any one of these VPS providers.

If the port 25 is blocked. Is it possible to work with 465 or it must be only 25 to be able to set-up this server?

Tony, I just spent the day and night with MiaB Slack forum, trying to get MiaB to run on Contabo. We tried Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04 and Debian 11 and even the Power-MiaB fork and they all had the same error. nsd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code' It seems Contabo are not using the standard Ubuntu/Debian repos/images/templates. Have you tested Contabo?

Hi Tony, really awesome video, thanks! I'm very newbie on this subject, may I ask you what is the difference of this approach from using something like Zoho? I've never used Zoho, but I've done a VPS course and the instructor didn't go into mailing because of its complexity and because it could expose security vulnerabilities, so he recommended using Zoho.
The instructor was right, anyway Zoho bring its own contract's limits.
With a self hosted solution like this, you are free to manage, for example, all the domains domains, subdomains, users, number of email sent etc..
Other than that, you have much more control over the data passing through your mails (if you build a properly secure environment).

I have a web site in another cloud and i use WP Mail SMTP lugin for basic yandex mail system.
If i install Mail-in-a-Box, how can i configure SMTP settings on WP Mail SMTP plugin or should i use another plugin for IMAP?

Great video, thank you. My thought is if I use another (3rd part) server then I might as well have my emails on another provider (free or paid).
The risk is always there that someone is snooping at your information. Also if something ever happens to me my family would not be able to access my email.

These are automatically configured by Mail in a box

You can install, but you won't be able to send mail.
Can you after this still setup a second VPS with a webserver using the same domain?
Yes, you can. You need to edit the DNS records and set your domain's A record to your second VPS.
When you set the timezone, is that the timezone of the server or the timezone of the user? (I'm assuming the former)
Your users can be anywhere. You can pick your server timezone or your physical location timezone

Hi I host my website from home with virtualmin and Cloudflare. After tel net on port 25 I get this: «telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out.» That to do in this case. I also have a reverse proxy.

I don't understand why do mail servers need a specific port for outgoing mail why can't they just pick a random port like any client and listen for a specific port for incoming mail like any server
That's a good question, and I don't know the answer. My guess is with most protocols, there is a standard and that same goes for mail ports
This is because gmail and other isp listen only to port 25.
I made one once with digitalocean but problem was that their ips are mostly blocked by email filters…

@@TonyTeachesTech, it's not spanish, it's portuguese. XD It is not recommended to make your own mail server. I think this can only be useful in very specific cases. For example, in internal networks (intranet) of large companies or public agencies. Or simply for learning.

Some are concerned about privacy, others cannot afford a paid email service at early stages of their business, and even others are just curious. I hope to provide educational and real-world value.
