Veteran known for playing 'Taps' at sunset leaves Florida after health problems

  • If you live around Indian Rocks Beach, you’ve likely been treated to one of Florida’s most breathtaking sunsets. This popular spot draws a crowd almost nightly. People gather to take in the calm and the color and give thanks for another day.
    It is a location that truly provides a treat for the eyes. And, for years, that patch of sand was also a treat for the ears, too, thanks to a local veteran’s bugle.
    For six years here, Ken Deka was as reliable as the sun. He was often seen walking the shoreline before faithfully playing his favorite song. Deka is a veteran who served in the Vietnam War. He learned to play Taps in the Army and started to play the 24-note song as the sun went down each night to pay tribute to his friends who never made it home from war.
