No need to Hot water Bath if you are putting steaming hot grape juice into jars, just turn the lid tight and the heat of the product will cause the rubber of the ring to soften and as the product cools so will the rubber, this cooling action will cause the rubber to seal onto the jars!

I feel a kinship with you. I have 12 children, 8 biological and 4 adopted from foster care. We have a 80 acre ranch where we raise cattle and sheep. We have a large garden. I am tired right now because I have been making tomato paste for the last two days, home schooling the youngest children and doing appointments since I am a midwife. I smile when I watch you work. It’s all so familiar.

It hadn't occurred to me to turn concord grapes into canned juice concentrate until I saw you do it. My sister always gives away her grapes, and so this past summer, when she offered them to me, I accepted them all. 40 lbs. of grapes! I don't have a steam juicer, so I cooked them in my stock pot, with a tiny bit of water, not long, just until the juice was released. Then I put them through the food mill, let the juice settle. Then I scooped out the juice, strained it through a colander lined with a nut bag. I canned the juice concentrate without adding any extra water or sugar. We love it! When we open a quart of it, we dilute it in the jug with water to taste, and drink it without any sugar added at all.
I turned the deseeded grape pulp into a jam. It was all pretty time consuming but so worth it! Thank you so much for the inspiration!

It's so good that the children know where food (and juice) comes from and the work involved to prepare whole foods. I've always loved seeing the beautiful vineyard with the little church there in the midst! So picturesque! 🍇 💒

I am so glad that I found your video. This is my first year of having an amazing harvest. I tried cold press juicing but this vastly changes the color of grape juice to an unsavory color. So I tried the steamer and it changed everything. I thought for sure I was going to need to water bath the jars. I did just like you do… I kept my jars hot, lids everything ready. Then when I poured the hot juice into each jar, wiped rims & place buttons and screw tops…. They sealed perfectly too. I tried to de-stem, but it was such a chore with 120 pounds of grapes by myself. I did not add sugar because I wanted the option to turn the juice into jelly as well. I ended up washing all the grapes and steaming the grape bunches instead. My quest is to find like minded women like you to can food with. Enjoy the company and divide the work. I have yet to find a canning friend. I pray for one-I dearly want to find a friend who loves and believes in doing these things-I’ve yet to find one in MD

You talked me into buying a steam juicer and I love it. At this moment I'm steaming strawberries and canning juice and jelly. It saves on wasted fresh fruit. At the end of every week I freeze the over rope fresh fruit we have left and freeze it. When I have enough grapes, peaches etc I juice them. No more wasting fresh fruit!

I know this is an older upload but, I love it!! I'm over in Sweden and I don't have grapes, unless I buy them in the store and that means, they are way out of my budget... Oh well... Instead, since I live out on our homestead in the country/forest, I have our own strawberries, raspberries both in the garden and wild, blueberries throughout the forest as well as cranberries and so much more that I harvest from nature.
I do a similar recipe for juice concentrate as you do but, with the strawberries, blueberries etc. It's wonderful to be able to enjoy these "luxuries" during the winter months.

Your anecdote about your grandmother covering the grapes was interesting. I am not a gardener, and there is sooo much I do not know. I watch a channel that originates in China, a housewife whose father has hundred of peach trees on a mountain; he covers every single peach with a small bag! And, boy, do they look wonderful! That was the first I knew about actually covering fruit to prevent parasites and bird damage. Thank you for the fun.

I was ready to make my grape juice today when your video came up and I watched it first. I do mine a bit differently in that I let the juice hose run into a fine strainer and into a pot (sitting on a stool as yours does), which I frequently empty and strain again before pouring into a large stock pot. This way I eliminate any fine seeds that might slip through. The big pot of juice is heated, sweetened, bottled in quart jars (that better suits our family size) and water bathed. Process takes a bit longer but it's ready to be diluted with another jar and bit of water. Just can't beat homemade grape juice.

I usually borrow my sister in law’s steam juicer but last year, my husband pressed the juice and it tasted even better! We froze it so that it stayed in its raw form. I do like to can the steamed juice and plan on doing both methods this year.

Love-love the resourcefulness of your boys. Who would have thought to use goggles?
How much water do you usually add to make grape juice. Last year, someone gave me 2 - 5 gallon buckets of grapes. I didn't have a steamer, so I put them through my cone-shaped food strainer. Lots of work separating the seeds and skins. Then I made grape jam. When I was too tired to make more jam, I canned up the grape juice in my water bath canner. So I have grape juice concentrate on my shelf.

I made grape juice without a steam juicer last year (very long and tedious process. Got a steam juicer this year😂) and added sugar. It was a concentrate. Then I’d just mix with water and get juice. It was delicious. I’m trying to adapt to the steam juicer method and hopefully get a very similar product.
