  • I'm Siobhan and I'm totally blind. Blind Girl Vlogs is here to spread awareness about blindness and visual impairment. A few hours before upload, a YoUTube troll accused me of faking my disability. I discuss this in depth in this video but I feel I also managed to put the troll right.
WARNING contains graphic medical scenes and the s word. I feel it's important to educate people about sight loss and to put this type of hate in context

I am so glad that you made this video, because it sheds light on one of the saddest types of internet trolls; the brazen darkness of disability bashing. In the United States this is actually a crime, and harassing the disabled is beyond ugly and horrific. Your independence is to be celebrated, not to be questioned. Bless you for being brave and sharing your prosthetics, it truly is beautiful and I'm quite certain the blind and sighted community salute you! ❤️

My sister wears prosthetic eyes. She was using her phone inside the train, when a random woman accused her of faking her blindness. She proceeded to remove her prosthetic eyes and told the lady "Now do you believe I'm blind?" The lady freaked out and told her to put her prosthetic eyes back on. 🤣

People can be so darn mean....I´m Autistic with ADHD, Tourette, OCD and Anxiety/Panic Disorder, it´s really hard to prove things like that since it doesn´t show on the outside, invisible disability....I´ve been told I´m a lot of things, everything from faking it to just being lazy, stupid, dumb...or just want attention...
The one thing that always gets to me, it´s when people say or think that I´m sick (Autism is not a disease, it´s just the nervsystem and brain that works a bit different), like if I work harder and take meds, then I will be cured, or change my diet, like my food is the reason I´m born the way I am...
I am glad you made this video, at the same time, you shouldn´t have had to! Like you said, it´s the 21st century! the ignorance a lot of people still live in, it´s mindblowing! I have a hard time understanding how people can be so....sorry, F-ING stupid!? they are the once that should have a disability label on them!
This topic is really frustrating and aggravating!
Thank you for sharing tho :) 💜

    Hi Siobhan:
First, thank you for sharing. I'm sorry you received that horrible comment; from one blind woman to another, I feel your pain and disgust. ❤️ Internet comments, especially on TH-cam, can often be the worst. Do people not know how to spell?😖😖
What a deep and relatable video. And it leads to so many topics and bigger issues. I've really been thinking about these things lately, and there isn't enough space here to put all my thoughts down. So many people talk about gender and racial discrimination, about diversity and inclusivity. Yet rarely are disabled people included in the conversation and allowed to truly be heard and understood. As disabled people, like everyone else, each of us has a different journey and our disabilities, including blindness, are unique to the individual,. We've learned to not only use technology to the best advantage, but we've learned to develop certain skills to live and do everyday things. But it's like if the nondisabled people don't have concrete proof, then they think it's a fake and we're discarded, put in a box, treated like fifth class citizens, less than capable and feeling human beings.
An example from my own life: So I'm in the rare precentage of people born completely blind. My eye condition isn't a disease because the eyes didn't deteriorate; they stopped developing while I was in my mother's womb. They're abnormally small, at least the irises are; the condition is called microphthalmia.
But even though my eyes have never functioned, I'm still a very visual person. I can talk about visual concepts well, though there are things I won't ever truly understand. I've started learning to take photographs, and I'm deeply drawn to nature photography. Yet when I've commented on videos or written cogent messages, I've been told I can't really be blind because I write well. In-person conversations often include remarks like: "Well, are you sure you're really blind? Because you look and talk too smart to be blind."
I've even had people try to peer closely in my face, or hold up x number of fingers and say: "How many fingers am I holding up? Prove that you can't see."
It's been a long journey but I've come to a place where I realize others don't have the power to control my feelings; I can feel something, acknowledge it, then choose how I want to react. Still, I'm human, and it gets hard. So I hear and feel your pain. Let's continue supporting each other and challenging society; and demand that society be accountable in its worped and often narrow perceptions. The reality is, disability catches up to everyone at some point; it's a human condition and nobody should need to prove anything.
    Take care. 💕

You did a very very brave thing to do this video. It helps some teens here to understand everyone lives good life if he wants to, though he needs these special things. It's nothing big deal to laugh at or be afraid of . I hope one day you can feel good and do it again with happy smiles or humor jokes. Not everyone has good stories to tell, but you do.

It is so messed up that people even have to do this.. because of people making false and hurtful accusations. Thank God for all the adaptations you have that help you since you don't have your sight. Thank you for making this video and speaking out about it.. props to you. This world has a lot of work to do. We need more people like you in it. ♡

Honestly I have never understood and I never will understand why people are just mean to be mean. It's not like they have a personal issue with someone they are just lashing out at strangers. It dosent make the slightest of sense. Like do you feel better being mean?? If you do then try being nice because you couldn't even imagine the feeling of knowing you brightened someone's day. I am sincerely sorry you had to experience that and I really enjoyed your video!

Omg, thank you for the warning, I'm squeamish
I had a worker at Woking Tip (Martyr's Lane) say I'm not disabled, there's nothing wrong with me and I was walking holding a bag. I was using my forearm Walker, no bag, being ignored asking the man to call their manager. None would. They were busy allowing the TV crew to park in the disabled bay, and watching them do record the TV pgm upcycling dumped furniture on BBC.
They allowed the abuse of the bay and then abused me. I know exactly how you felt, you do feel degraded sick bcse everybody we have to live with our conditions, the struggles, and they
I was being videoed by another man on his mobile phone, he was throwing in those comments while I absolutely hysterical. To get a better outburst he would keep saying there was nothing wrong with me. It was so demeaning, degrading and humiliating I wrote to Surrey County Council and because I called him a stupid prat I was at fault.
He refused to hand over the footage, the CCTV wasn't available, broken, all will prove the lies.
I've begged to show CCTV, theres so many cameras, but nothing, the man wouldn't show his footage saying to his boss he would violate data protection.
I was sitting with the boot open in my car most of the time, they videoed me getting my Walker back in the boot, so they know I was using it.
All came about because they didn't want to assist me because of Covid19. I know there's no point arguing with them so I kept asking for them to call their manager, they ignored
They never followed the "public sector Equality duty" they just decided not to help disabled anyone including disabled.
They didn't make any due regard, nothing.
Fortunately I have email evidence from the past about the behaviour of those men there. The same issues that the council never dealt with.
But I was at fault in their eyes as I responded to their vile comments saying they are stupid prats.

This person who made the comments is obviously deeply unhappy. Possibly a child, almost certainly not though. Being them is their crime but it is also their punishment. We only have to live with them for moments. They have to live with themselves for a lifetime

@@seaninherts I loved this comment in the previous video as well and it truly is a sad truth, being them is their crime and their punishment. The worst punishment for that type of behavior is living with the alienating after affects of a life ill spent.

It's not only on the Internet. I've been caaled a fake blind man, even though I have a guide dog, which should be a true indication as is a wheelchair. People like this don't deserve my time but sometimes you have to react. Well done for this video, it's just a shame we have to prove it.

Wow I really can not believe someone has the audacity to say it?! I found you 1 year later and I’ve watched almost all your videos in a span of a couple hours your humour and I do not think you never ever need to explain yourself really they’re ignorant as you just said you just opened a Massive can of Whoop ass to them! Great on you!
Quick question do you have to remove your eyes before your sleep? Do you have to clean them?? Can you keep them?? I know eyes can weep anything that comes into contact with them so I assume that can still happen? Can it not?
And really I’m really amused to see blind people walking with their walking stick / guide stick etc and I sometimes just watch them for a while keep my eye on them just incase they misjudge something then I would take it upon myself to walk infront of them ask them if they need assistance and ask may I hold your hand to guide or you can hold my arm and they usually never ever say no thank you they really appreciate It

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I'm glad you highlighted it. I've felt like a fake most of my life. I have severe ME and some people think it's all in my head which is cruel. I don't understand why people think you would fake disability. Like what's the point. I don't get it.

life in a shell i’m so sorry you also experience hate and discrimination. I agree, why on earth would anyone go out of their way to fake any form of illness or disability or impairment, understandably there are a few but the majority of people have to live with it every day and learn how to cope and adapt to their situation. I felt so compelled to do a video to try and highlight the real impact it has on people. I get so sad having to fight and prove that I’m not faking my blindness and I’m in a position where I can remove my prosthetic eyes and it be done with but for many people who are blind or visually impaired, can’t do that. Incredibly damaging to those individuals.

@@BlindGirlVlogs I watch quite a few vloggers that are disabled or chronically ill and unfortunately they have all had to do what you just did. You shouldn't have to prove yourself. On a brighter note it was interesting to see you take your eyes out so to speak. That took some guts I tip my hat to you. Hope you don't mind my asking but I'm very interested to know can you feel the prosthetic eye pieces? Like are you aware of them all the time? You don't have to answer if this makes you uncomfortable. Xxx
