    The amazing thing is that microphones even from 60 years ago are still competitive with the new stuff that's coming out. I can't name a single other industry where that's the case, anyways amazing video once again Tom !!

      Right?! In a world where tech gets updated and outdated every other month, mics are this unique niche where things from the past can perform just as well (or even sometimes better) than their modern counterparts.

    Excellence analogy about cycling! For a Podcast or anything similar, you're not going to notice it. But with a singer in a live sound, it's clearly an improvement. Glad to support the "People Choice" Content creator!

    Still love my SM58. It's beat up from over 15 years of use, but it's still kicking. Shure truly made an unbeatable almost indestructible beast.

    Dude! Congrats on all your success. Clearly you're a gearhead and you're capitalizing on things you enjoy. Your content on the Rodecaster Pro 2, but that piece of equipment is very deep. Do you do any consulting? Like you would get on a private stream and walk me through some settings? If that is part of your business I would be interested in seeing your rates.

    I started watching thinking I won't be tempted. Then you compared it to 3 mics I have and suddenly I'm suffering GAS. I will resist but that's a great sounding mic.

    Shure, new mic sounds nice. Great for life performance, overkill for TH-cam or podcast studio.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think overkill is subjective (totally get what you're saying though!). If someone has the budget and wants to go for it, I don't really see any reason not to, even if it's just for fun.
      And if it's for work, then those little improvements can really make a big difference for someone whose channel is their main job or a major/main source of income. Those are definitely times when you might want to maximize performance and reliability, even if it's not 100% necessary.
      I think a really cool thing about TH-cam is that you don't HAVE to do any of that though. A phone, or simple mic setup can be more than enough in many cases!

    I like the sound of the Nexodyne! I don’t think Shure has ever made a bad microphone honestly! Don’t worry about the beginning, it wouldn’t be a Tom video without the puns! I would worry that something is wrong with the universe haha! You may have already done a video on this but something I was thinking about from our email, how can you tell if your voice sounds good on a bright microphone versus thinking you need a darker one? One of the main reasons that I thought I needed a different one than the EL Gato Wave 3 was because to me my voice didn’t sound deep enough, which I believe has to do with a darker tone. You told me, though that you thought my voice sounded great on its Lewtt based capsule. I know there are ways to offset that with processing and things like that, but for most people, I think they would want to know that they got the right microphone in general for their voice type if you haven’t done a video about this, you should consider doing one. I think it would be really helpful!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a great point and something that's definitely tricky! Even the best mic reviews can only do so much to help someone guess what their voice might sound like on a given mic. I do think this is one of the reasons why the SM7B is so popular: it sounds pretty good on just about any voice, but is also made to EQ'd in a very flexible way. I personally prefer the default sound of "brighter" mics like the Nexadyne and many condensers, but not every voice sounds great on them.

    • @JoshRazauskas
      @JoshRazauskas หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ That’s a great answer too! Maybe it’s the nature versus nurture thing too. Maybe none of us actually really like the way we sound inside our own head or maybe for me it’s just completely psychological because people have always made such fun of my voice because of my cerebral palsy.

    When it comes to the plosives between the Shure Nexadyne and Shure SM58, I like how the Nexadyne sounds as it's got that warmth compared to the SM58. Of course, I would rather speak from the top of the mic at a 45 degree angle from the left or the right side of the mouth because I'm all for the microphone technique.
    And of course, the plosives could be manageable. I don't mind the plosives at all, but only if it's not obnoxious and distorting the sound of the voice. The one thing that I do mind is the breath noises where the mic needs to be positioned out of the way of the mouth and nose when speaking.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  หลายเดือนก่อน

      They’re both still quite excellent for Shure. All things being equal, I do prefer the Nexadyne since I do like its native sound a bit more, but the 58 probably isn’t going to be discontinued anytime soon. 😎

  • @nunoandradebluesdrive
    @nunoandradebluesdrive หลายเดือนก่อน

    still, just as the sm7b, the old sm58 needs to be eqd... I love both. I really think this microphone thing is over hyped. It's easy to get a filter to keep the 58 capsule at the same sweet spot distance from the voice like the sm7b, and the differences are even closer. I mean, it's more about how to use the mic. I love the sm57 for a lot of stuff with some windshield and eq - different approach as with the 58 cause the capsule sits in a different distance, and a small eq difference also.
    If I was going for a podcast the 58/57 would work just awesome.

    Would love to hear some examples of those "professional live settings" to know if the nexadyne is worth it - it "shure" sounds best here - and to my ears better even without added processing though I'm wearing headphones that may be adding their own processing. But what would it sound like doing an interview in a busy room with lots of action around you?

    If you one day have another comparison, would be great if you put there Marantz in the mix..i don't know if they are abandoning mic market, because i don't see nothing new from them for a while.. but i will buy one soon, just don't know wich Marantz one ..they probably will stick themselves to pre-amplifiers and amplifiers and so on..they have a cheap 150€ ini tube amplifier with bluetoth that looks interesting, now that i am looking on Amazon what they have..was a good video !

    I have a “vintage” Philips dynamic microphone, I can’t remember the exact model tho, But it’s a really old one from the 70s or 80s and it’s a gold one. Ha, How cool is that? 😁

  • @nickglover
    @nickglover หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Not to be that guy, but if you've got a Doc Popp on your SM7B there, then it's not quite a fair comparison. In my own experience, the Doc Popp sucks off like 3 dB of the high end as compared to the stock pop filter. So if you really want an apples to apples comparison, you really do need to use the stock filter.
    Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not saying the Doc Popps are bad or anything. No judgment is involved here, just objectively they will make your mic sound darker than normal. That's all.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven’t found much if any difference in tone personally.

    • @nickglover
      @nickglover หลายเดือนก่อน

      I mean that's fine if you don't hear it or don't care, but there is a difference. Normally I wouldn't care, but for comparing one mic to another, it really ought to be stock vs stock and not stock vs with 3rd party accessories, that's all. I've yet to find any aftermarket foam (from any manufacturer for any mic) that doesn't alter the sound in some way vs stock.

    Please be careful with this mic, is expensive, sounds good but lacks of quality. It can be scratched very easily and the paint would come off very very fast. I had it for 3 weeks only studio use not heavy use. Sounds good but I believe is not better that a M80.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a bummer to hear. The one I borrowed is used by a live sound engineer regularly, but I know he's pretty meticulous about his gear, so it's still in very good condition.

    Nearly all of the reviews of the Nexadyne have been essentially irrelevant for the designed application. This is a microphone for live sound, which has an entirely different set of requirements. The target use of this microphone is for vocals in a live band, usually one with drums, bass and electric guitars, and maybe keys. Isolation, rejection, and high gain before feedback are paramount. However, what is even more paramount with this kind of instrumentation is the ability to keep the vocal sitting properly in the mix. A Shure Beta 87A is one of the best sounding microphones for a female vocalist with a piano accompaniment, but is a horrendous microphone for nearly any voice in a rock band.
    The SM58 has remained “the standard” for which all stage vocal microphones are compared to because of its unique ability to keep a vocal “in the mix” even when used improperly. It’s lack of clarity and the mid/high “saturation” help plant the vocal.
    The Nexadyne is supposed to be have this same handling and voicing as the SM58, but has the ability to reduce the bleed from across the stage from the guitars and drums.
    While we can simulate a few of these things in the studio, this is not a podcaster/youtuber microphone. While it can be used as such, its design is for a totally different application. Where Shure has really hurt themselves with the launch of this microphone is that they haven’t been getting this microphone into the hands of live sound engineers. We talk amongst ourselves and compare notes amongst ourselves. Unfortunately, Shure hasn’t made much of the effort to get the microphone into the hands of us instead of podcasters. I’d get one to try out, but it would be my money and I’m not willing to take the risk of it being another KSM8, which is NOT a universally usable microphone like the SM58. The cost of these microphones put them in line with the Telefunken M80 which is the best in this price class.
