He could've done a show at *ABC,* or at *FOX* (where they were offering him almost double what *NBC* wanted to pay him). But Conan accepted the *NBC* proposal that also meant forcibly retiring Jay. And Jay had supported Conan in many ways through the years (particularly during his early low-rated days as the fledgling host of "Late Night"). If Conan had accepted one of those huge offers from *ABC* or *FOX,* he would've had his show with an earlier start time, wouldn't have had to wait 5 years to get it, Jay and his staff could've stayed on at "The Tonight Show," and the entire debacle would've been averted.
NBC told Leno in 2004 they'd give him another 5 year deal but when that ran out he wouldn't be kept on no matter what. So technically he wasn't fired, he was just given a very long period of notice. @@PauloTheGeek But I think Jay staying with NBC hurt Conans show, even if Jay didn't purposely plan that. All he needed to do was look at how they were treating Jay (the #1 guy in late-night who was making millions for them- and they thought they could predict when he'd no longer be valuable). And keeping Conan on a string for 5 years was basically how they kept Jay from leaving 18 years earlier. *"Stay with us, Jay and we guarantee you Johnny's seat."* But when he took over, they were ready to drop Jay and give the job to Dave in order to keep him from going to *CBS.* It's the same thing. He had the number 1 show and they were kicking him out! Lol, like the guy or not… he was getting fuct too. Always made out to be the bad guy, but really it was on NBC.
Weren’t the Nielsen reports about his show saying that his viewerbase was starting to plummet because they were dying? He was on for so long it’s not like a surprise.
Jay beat Dave for over a decade before *NBC* pulled him in favour of Conan. And when Jay returned after Conan's resignation, he was soon #1 again and attracted the most 18 - 49 year olds to the end of his run in 2014.
Why don’t they mention that when it mattered most, Jay did have the snake whispering in their ear…in the form of Helen Kushnick, who outmaneuvered Letterman to get Jay the tonight show to begin with.
Letterman was never going to get the Tonight Show anyway. That's well documented. Letterman and the NBC executives hated each other, and he would regularly mock them on his show.
Yeah, because the ratings of a guy put in front of an audience who didn't get his schtick, nor was given the time to adapt them to it, is a solid indication of the fanbase. A fan-base which has kept Conan's career alive for another decade on cable of all things.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I actually think Jay Leno was kind of screwed over in the whole process too. The one thing he could have done is made the integral choice to not take the Tonight Show back. He should have known that would have backfired. But they went to him 4 years before they even did the switch and told him that they were going to put Conan in his spot for years from then and they did. I do think so Conan O'Brien would still be the host of The Tonight Show if Jay Leno would have just bowed out and went away. So he's not completely innocent in the matter but it is possible that it shouldn't have happened in the first place. There's a good chance he would still be the host of The Tonight Show if they didn't want to try to hold on to Conan O'Brien so badly. But we will never know. I'm glad Conan O'Brien is doing well because he is my favorite out of any talk show host before or since. But I also watch The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and I have fond memories of that show too
From the moment Conan signed his deal to acquire "The Tonight Show" Jay was getting screwed. RE: "The one thing he could have done is made the integral choice to not take the Tonight Show back." Helen paid for her machinations, but it sure was tragic because it didn't have to be that way. They had a written guarantee that Jay would inherit "The Tonight Show" when Johnny left and she was going to be the producer. But Helen had to ruin everything by planting those stories alleging the network wanted Carson out. And when Jay asked her if she was behind it, she lied to his face and told him she wasn't. The revelation put Jay in a tough position because he and Helen had been longtime friends, it ruined Jay's relationship with Johnny, and it turned off some viewers because they continued to suspect Jay (who revered Johnny) was in on Helen's scheme. Regarding Kushnick writing a letter to be read at her funeral roasting Jay: to go out like that pretty much confirms that she was a disturbed personality. So sad for everybody involved.
I never had that much regard for Jay Leno. I'm racking my brains for an iconic joke or interview and not coming up with anything memorable. But it could be a circular argument. since I might have missed it because I didn't like him enough to watch him in the first place.

The next generation is untalented and are poor guests--no charisma. They're not amusing, interesting or worth talking to.They're BORING.Why we have talk shows at all, anymore,is what amazes me.
The new “young” blood sucks. That’s why.

@@ChrisOzar Conan in 2004 was hot, approaching the end of his contract and receiving major offers. And let's remember that when things started going badly, *NBC* still wanted to keep Conan as host of "The Tonight Show." But he chose to resign and take the buy out package. If Conan had accepted one of those huge offers from *ABC* or *FOX,* he would've had his show with an earlier start time, wouldn't have had to wait 5 years to get it, Jay and his staff could've stayed on at "The Tonight Show," and the entire debacle would've been averted.
Jay Leno for President!!
I never thought they fired him. Just thought he had the show for 15 years and Conan was going to do the next 15
NBC told Leno in 2004 they'd give him another 5 year deal but when that ran out he wouldn't be kept on no matter what. So technically he wasn't fired, he was just given a very long period of notice.
Pretty dumb move, Jay stayed no.1 comfortably and Conan's popularity dropped off. Not one person was to blame for debacle but no one covered themselves in glory either. It was such a weird set of events.
@@PauloTheGeek But I think Jay staying with NBC hurt Conans show, even if Jay didn't purposely plan that. By doing the show before Conan everyone started focusing on him and the controversy and it was a bad lead in for Conans show. They also didn't give Conan enough time to work out his show. It had some problems when they moved Conan from ny to la and when they hired back Andy Richter who is incredibly unlikeable. Every show Andy is on fails.

RE: "So Jay just caused himself a lot of problems for a few more years."
There wouldn't have been any problems if Conan had said no *NBC's* proposal. All he needed to do was look at how they were treating Jay (the #1 guy in late-night who was making millions for them- and they thought they could predict when he'd no longer be valuable). And keeping Conan on a string for 5 years was basically how they kept Jay from leaving 18 years earlier.
*"Stay with us, Jay and we guarantee you Johnny's seat."*
But when he took over, they were ready to drop Jay and give the job to Dave in order to keep him from going to *CBS.*
It's the same thing. But for some reason Conan thought *NBC* couldn't do to him what they'd done to both Jay and Dave. Terrible decision-making.

She was until her erratic behaviour forced Jay to fire her.
Helen Kushnick was Jay's manager, her ruthlessness got Jay Leno the Tonight Show. She planted stories in the LA Times to force Johnny Carson to retire. She ensured Letterman's friendship with Jay was destroyed by upsetting many of David's production team in New York. When Jay started hosting the Tonight Show in 1992, Helen turned into this awful, arrogant, ruthless and sadistic producer which annoyed NBC management, NBC owners GE and all in Hollywood when she used to block guests from being booked, or she would shout a massive abusive tirade to staff and guests. NBC told Jay to fire her in September 1992, if he didn't he would lose the Tonight Show job, so he fired her, NBC banned her from NBC Burbank forever and she turned her fire towards Jay until the day she died, including asking people to read a letter she wrote to be read at her funeral, which would a roast of Jay and totally offensive

RE: "The one thing he could have done is made the integral choice to not take the Tonight Show back."
But he had to give up "The Tonight Show" because of a decision Conan and the network made, so why should Jay turn down a chance to return? And he had his staff to consider, too.

RE: "I do think so Conan O'Brien would still be the host of The Tonight Show if Jay Leno would have just bowed out."
I think Conan's the one who should've moved on. But it's a long time ago and everybody still came out rich, so that's good.
Helen Kushnick was Jay's manager, her ruthlessness got Jay Leno the Tonight Show. She planted stories in the LA Times to force Johnny Carson to retire. Helen paid for her machinations, but it sure was tragic because it didn't have to be that way.
