Glad that got figured out. Thanks for posting the update. I think I learned a valuable lesson during this mystery. I have decided to pay more attention to and log my primer and bullet lot numbers. I have always logged my powder lot numbers. I never logged bullet lots, because before this year I didn't shoot at and beyond 600 yards so it didn't really matter to me. But for safety sake, I'm going to log all three now, not just consistancy reasons.

Always been a die hard CCI fanboy, mostly because I loaded some of my first hand loads with 35-40 year old CCIs with good results but also because the seem to be consistent lot to lot. I never really messed with Winchester but the few times I did out of necessity, it wasn’t satisfactory. Glad you figured it out and happy to see someone else who adores the .44 Magnum cartridge!

@@boricuaarecibo9259 if you factor inflation, probably late 80’s or early 90’s. Stored properly, they will work fine. If the box is a lighter blue with some white and I believe yellow? lettering on it, that would be about the time period IIRC

Back another lifetime ago we saw this same thing working up loads for handgun silhouette matches
Heavy bullets and max ish ... powder charges . Some of pistol primers " certain brands " would burn through occasionally... FAIL !
On advice from a " Manufacturer " we started using rifle primers because of their sturdier construction and were told to reduce
our powder charges and work back up because of the rifle primers hotter ignition , this fixed that issue , we were always watching
for signs of overpressure , flattened primers , case rings , and opened pockets ... it was a very enjoyable time working up loads to
knock over those heavy plate targets at a distance ... I really enjoy your channel Gavin , if we had your equipment we could have
ruled the world ... take care pal ; ) ...

I still have a lot of Winchester primers sitting around from the Obama years (components were scarce and I bought whatever I could find); I'll be interested in lot numbers if Winchester ever lets us know. One more thing to consider when loading 44 magnum and Hornady FTX bullets is that the case length needs to be trimmed to 1.255" due to the longer olive. This information is stated in yhe 11th edition of the hornady reloading manual.

Just for the sake of completeness, I would have turned the microscope on my primer seating punch, just to make sure there isn’t a nick or ding in it, that could, under some circumstances, deeply scratch the primer, causing a weakening of the primer. You know a defense attorney would insist on it. Are you still using the same seating punch as when you loaded those rounds?

Yep the intricacies of reloading and the variables of component manufacturing over periods of time that produce billions of rounds will introduce unforeseen anomalies in materials, tooling, workmanship and quality. Combine that with 10s and 100s of thousands of reloaded rounds and inevitably you will run into some unforeseen issues. Makes me want to test lots my components before they make it into large rounds like 460 and 500s&w loads or any rifle rounds

I quit using Win LR primers some years ago. They were undersize. The cracks you showed are most likely the result of hydrogen embrittlement when plating the primer cup, although they could be the result of other process deviations in the cup manufacturing process. In short. They are bad primers.

  • @jmichaelcarbonniere9549
    @jmichaelcarbonniere9549 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Gavin, I know I'm a bit late to the party here but I'll chime in anyway. Did you have an opportunity to examine any of the same lot of primers that had not been loaded? I know it might be a stretch but I would think that the stress of seating and then removing the primer could be causing the cracks, although the potential for a crack would definitely be in the primer cup from the start. Were you able to measure the thickness of the cup? I would also put the blame for the cracks to be the possible reason for the rounds that showed gas leakage, however, I would be hard pressed to blame flattened primers on a cracked primer cup. An excessively thin cup, could most definitely be the reason for both the cracks and keakage and the flattened appearance. I don't use WW primers exclusively but a fair percentage of my pistol primers are WW and I've never had, nor seen, any difficulties with them before (and I have reloaded well over 1 million rounds in my life!). Admittedly I don't buy primers very often, mostly because I buy them in case lots of 5,000 at a time and my reloading has slowed down considerably in the past few years (take my word for it, getting old sucks!). Honestly, I am not so sure that your mystery has been solved. I know I might have a bit of a problem finding untouched primers from 2016 but it should not be that difficult to find an undamaged primer from that batch of ammo, unless you happened to have used it all by now. I know I am down to the very last round of .45 Auto from my days of owning a gun shop in the early 1980's but I never had reason to pull any of them apart since they all worked just fine. Odd ballistics can be a real mother bear of a problem to solve when problems do crop up like this!
    Cheers,
    jc

I have fired well over 100,000 Winchester primers and never had a primer problem. I believe your ruptured primer is the result of overpressure, not the cause of it. The way the primer looks with a kind of mushroom head is the result of extreme pressure no two ways about it. I know the primers say standard and magnum, but I only use magnum (only)primers with 296/H110 because of low temperature ignition problems I have had. One theory I will offer is this; for some reason you experienced a hangfire, but the primer pushed the bullet out of the case, the the powder ignited, this resulted in a low density ignition circumstance. The hangfire could be only milliseconds, enough for the bullet to move before full ignition. Another possibility is the crimp did not hold the bullet securely enough against recoil, and it started to pull creating a low density situation. Do you know if the high pressure rounds were at the beginning of the cylinder or towards the end? Also your lower than normal velocity would tend to support the low density ignition theory.I can not answer as to the thickness of the primer cups, but I did have a commercial loader tell me about the hardness of the cups. He said that Federal were the softest and CCI the hardest with Winchester and Remington about the midpoint. One thing I saw a number of years ago was a small commercial reloader who decided to tumble some loaded rounds to give them the “final finished look”. Two blown up guns later he discontinued that practice. His theory was that the powder kernels broke and exposed more surface area to ignition. Whatever the cause he never tumbled loaded rounds again and never had a blown up gun. The point I am making is there might be something unrelated to the reloading process that may be the culprit.

A blown primer does not always equal overpressure. More often than not, a blown primer is just a blown primer. In your case, the pressure stays the same, and you change primers.

However many people were experiencing "problems" with Winchester Primers from between 2012 to as recently as 2019. In a few search results it was mentioned that Winchester noted that they Did NOT have an "Official" recall at that time, but did say some customers were experiencing some problems with their primers and Winchester would be happy to replace them.

Go figure Winchester is defective ammo. Who'd thunk it. After all Winchester has never had any boo-boos.
For real though I used to be big fan of Winchester. Mainly cause they tend to be thicker in the brass. But when you start having excessive misfires it's time to switch up. If I'm not mistaken the Beretta m9's had issues in the beginning where they were breaking locking blocks. Apparently Winchester loaded the NATO ammo to commercial specs and didn't account for the thicker brass resulting in Proof loads.
