      this was my very first quilt I ever made back in my early 20's...I worked as a bus chaperone for a disability centre and I was able to use my time on the bus to join sections...I only went so far with each piece..once they were to big to be putting together in my seat I joined them all at home..I'm about to turn 60 this year and I still use my quilt..mind you, I've had to repair it a few times since, AND every stitch in it was sewn by hand, no sewing machine...it's big enough to cover a queen size bed..

      @@knitpiks587 EPP is like the best quilting project for people who don't like actual quilting. (Unless you don't like the sewing part of it.)
      Get it all assembled & put it on anything. Pin it to the wall. Wrap some chair seats. Make pillows. And if you want an actual quilt, it's easy to throw a back on it, sew like a GAINT pillow & you basically have a duvet cover.

      How delightful it must have been to meet with Christine Vike.

    I don't need more projects..... But I am sincerely tempted to try this with one hexagon of of fabric from every project I work on. I used to have sashes of fabric tied around a table leg as a reminder of the things I had made, but that became a bit of a hassle. This might be too perfect to make a kind of 'remembrance' blanket.

      In my fantasy world, I make a crazy quilt with scraps from my various sewing projects throughout the years. This application seems much less overwhelming. I made 2 - 3 row pieces and ended up stitching them together, back to back, resulting in a fun trivet or hot pad. Lol! I had no idea, what so ever, what I was doing. I just did it. Lol! I think if I were to use denim again for this type of quilting, I would use larger hexagons. And, I think I might turn them into a lined project bag for my knitting/crochet projects. I love how 'mindless' this is. When traveling I tend to feel like garbage, especially in air ports, so while embroidery is a nice way to keep my hands busy it can be hard to have the mental energy to focus on making nice stitches or deal with mistakes. This is just basting and whip stiches with a single spool of thread. SO much easier to just zone out with which I adore. Bonus being I basically never fly alone so if I need to have it spill over onto my friend's lap a little bit while they read or play video games I know they wont mind.

    I'm so with you about needing a hand project for when I'm sitting/waiting/queueing/idling for something! More often than not it's knitting for me, unless I have some finishing work to do on a sewing project. But second to that, you TOTALLY have to strategically match your project to the situation - ie no intricate lace or cable work if I'm at a social gathering, lest I end up having to frog back all my progress 😅😅 similarly no colorwork while waiting in the grocery line! 🤣 Very excited to see how your privacy screen turns out in the end! 🎉🎉🤓 I bet it's gonna be STUN-NING 😍

    I'm planning some crazy quilt style projects right now, and wasn't looking forward to piecing together fabrics in a way where all the perimeters match up according to my geometric vision without awkward corners or ripples ... And this just solved that for me! I can draw any geometric pattern of my dreams on a single paperboard piece, cut it out, and then use this method to shape and join all the sections before embroidering them down onto the backing fabric! Heck yeah! Thanks for the inspiration and of course the characteristically delightful video!

    I made my second paper pieced quilt 31 years ago when we spent a year living in Ireland…for all the reasons you are! It was super smart of you to order the paper templates, because it is most important that they are a consistent heft and weight…in the olden days, I found the pages of the Laura Ashley catalog to be just right. Not too flimsy, so easy to get a sharp edge and very reusable, but not so stiff that it was painful to pierce the card stock. I found a thimble very necessary.

    It's so cool that you're taking up English paper piecing. I love it for its portability the same as you do, I started a project also with one and a half inch hexagons during the beginning of the pandemic when I didn't have access to my sewing machine but I really wanted to sew. I keep all my supplies in a little coin purse the size of my palm and pull it out whenever I'm waiting. The one thing I found that made the most difference in how enjoyable the sewing is is to use a really good quality hand sewing thread. I've been using Aurifil 50 wt and it glides so smoothly through the fabric.

    I loved EPP when I was traveling a lot for work for the same reasons you enjoy it.
    For what it’s worth, the term you were looking for when you were talking about randomly-ish picking what hexi goes next is usually called scrappy. (I love scrappy projects too!)

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting. To me (personally) "scrappy" conveys simply that it was made using scraps, and doesn't convey any info about the way in which it was pieced together/the level of planning that went into it. Interesting that this is the chosen term for the technique

    Stumbling through the creative process is my favourite method, too. Too much info kills the creativity, really agreeing ! That's why I just never work from bought patterns, for example. I NEED to figure it out on my own from various images and references (also my body is so not-commonly shaped that nothing ever fits anyways).
    Also LOVED the mechanized elephant instead of a real one !! Such a cool way to keep a staple of circus aesthetic without going into the problems of animal welfare inherent to keeping such animals in captivity. Plus my steampunk brain just loves puppeteering and such machines (recommending Nantes' steampunk park "Les Machines de l'Ile" btw).

    I did find that I could tell pretty well when I was sewing through paper. However, the better I got at only grasping two threads of each fabric, the less I had to worry about it. Also, it doesn’t matter if you go through the paper, when you pull them apart it just comes out.

    I love your Hobbit colours Shannon! Also looking forward to seeing the colourway for the other side. I did a small sample of English paper piecing for a slow stitch project. We stitched through the paper on the basting part, but the intention was to leave the paper in like they did in the old days when people couldn't afford batting to make their quilt warmer. I really like your method of only tacking down the corners because it makes it easy to get the paper out after and it looks much faster, so thanks for sharing your perspective on this.

    I started EPP after finding a pack of 1000 of those hexagon paper templates in a charity shop for £2! It's great for using those little fabric scraps that are too small for anything else, as well as those little bits of thread left over on bobbins after a project. I'm hoping to make a large blanket that will showcase my sewing journey with bits of fabric from all my makes over the last few years.
