    The envy talking here: Bless your heart you irish people. We had our last frost a week ago and first frost comes late september, early october. Grow potatoes no problem. My variety is 'whatever' Lidl has in store this week :)

    Another thing to remember is that, just because the time is up on growing the type of potato, doesn't mean you have to harvest them all at the same time. A lot of them do okay being left in the container even after the foliage has died down. Some can even be left for months as long as the container has good drainage. Saves trying to bag them up and store them somewhere cool. It seems to be another of the advantages of growing in containers. The lack of pest pressure allows them to remain in situ until needed.

      @niallgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a very good point Donna - particularly main crop potatoes will store in the soil very nicely like you say. Containers really are the way to go aren't they!

    A useful tip if you can't get your seed potatoes in when you should do is to take them outside and give them a weak spray of liquid feed. The tubers will take it in and it stops them using all their energy up before they get in the ground. Let them dry off before placing back n their chitting trays.I learned this from a very successful potato exhibitor years ago, but have never heard it mentioned anywhere since. I've tried it with good results.

    Thank goodness I am not the only one. That was me this year Niall! 😁 My spuds only got into my buckets mid July! Hoping they will still perform 🙏 I have now filled them up with dirt and 2 of them have fresh leaves on top of the soil. Maybe they will be ready for Christmas 😁

      @@niallgardens Thank you Niall, that's very kind of you to reply ❤️ It has yet to be discovered lol 😁 The leaves have only withered the past week, so I will check as soon as I am able. It should be farely easy with potatoes in pots, but for a new gardener, everything is a learning experience ☺️

    I understand aspirin dissolved in water and sprayed on your growing potatoes prevents potato blight. It also treats it if you catch it early. It also works on tomato blight and here in the deep south of the U.S. we get hit with tomato blight every summer. Finding aspirin in the shops now is like finding a needle in a haystack. Thankfully I bought some before the run on it. It only takes several dissolved in a gal of water.

    A couple of years ago i planted early and maincrops on 1st feb, april, june and august to see what the impact would be. The feb ones finished identically to the april ones. The maincrops planted in August had a slightly smaller yield about 10% less. All the others were essentially identical, provided they were left to die back so still plenty of time left!

    Buckets all the way. Two potato’s per tub for big spuds. Four per tub, smaller spuds. Fill to near top and mulch with cut grass.

  • @1ANRS
    @1ANRS ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a convert to Tony O'Neill's method as of this year and won't grow them in the ground again for all the reasons you said. I fill the entire bucket at the time of planting as I'm lazy and don't want to have to keep earthing up 😆. Only thing I did was only using 10 buckets as I totally over-estimated the yield, next year I need to use 20.
    For first earlies, I highly recommend Casablanca. I was surprised by just how much I liked it. It really soaks up the flavour of whatever you are cooking it with so it really infuses into the dish (consider duck massaman curry with the potatoes favoured with the nutty sauce for example). For main crop I tend to use King Edward as a default but I also tried Kerr this year and was again really surprised just how good it was.

    I would go straight for your 2nd option at this time of the year, Niall. As the haulms will be growing well into late blight season, I would fill the containers from the start so the shoots race to the surface ASAP.

    Been away so have been enjoying getting caught up. By the way here in North Dakota putting potatoes in now would be getting them in early. Although once in any variety grows quickly, not even bugs, no time for them.

    I've never grown potatoes before so I'm looking forward to seeing what harvest I get. I sowed them in bags and pots a couple of weeks ago and they're poking their noses above the compost now. They were a gift so I don't know what variety they are, adds to the mystery and excitement of first-time spud growing! :-D You'll need to come back and tell me when its time to dig 'em up though! Thanks Niall.

    Great video Niall. For my ageing body harvesting potatoes from pots or bags is the way to go. Today I planted 3 potatoes in a bag & I’m going to experiment by planting potatoes in a bag or pot every month on the full moon until November (after that our Australian Summer is too hot). Where we live, in northern NSW, we haven’t had a frost for five years so will see what happens.

    Nice to see you using pink fur apples Niall. My favourite maincrop! Aren't they delicious!!! Can be harvested for salad potatoes too. They are super sweet! Be a little careful planting this late though as you enter into blight season for potatoes. Check your blight times for you area . Usually July/August :) Nice to see you in the veg garden. Happy growing . Danny 🌱

    I put several varieties into containers, watered them thoroughly, and then faced three full days of torrential rain. I’ve frantically been trying to dry them out by covering them at night because I could not physically manage to move the pots. I’m hoping the seed potatoes don’t rot. Please tell me they won’t. Please. I’ll pay….🇨🇦❤️👍❤️🇨🇦

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think they'll be absolutely fine, even if they got a thorough soaking. The way I'd put your mind at ease is this... here in Ireland we get A LOT of rain, sometimes for days on end, and we grow great potatoes!

    • @francesbatycki404
      @francesbatycki404 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m sure they will be too, but boy, the rain was like nothing we see here normally. Pools of water! But today the covering comes off and they’re on their own. I’ve put them on several sq feet of cardboard so I can suppress a number of nasty things on the grass. Once I’ve suppressed it nicely, I’ll move the whole shebang and work on another section. So even if I don’t get spuds, I may be able to improve the yard. Lol! Anyway, thank you for your support…. Fingers crossed.

    Bought a box of seed potatoes on clearance a week or so ago.
    #1 They seem a bit soft to me. #2 The box says to water (in-ground) once a week. How often should I water the container?

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't worry about them being soft.... they do tend to go a little soft as time goes on. With regard to watering, rather than going by time, just make sure that the compost stays moist but not wet and you should be fine
