Yup, that's it!!! One thing I will never say is that the film is unrealistic, because this happens a lot. Honestly the only unrealistic part about it is that she even disliked him because they really don't care all that much in their personal life especially in their romantic life. Please. Folks really date homophobes, transphobes, racists, etc without even blinking. And you can't tell them nothing.
But sooo many conservatives are like that though - pro-“life” but either had an abortion themselves, payed for one for a mistress/wife/daughter, or pressured someone into one. Anti healthcare but know someone who died of a treatable ailment. The list goes on and on 😅 So I decided to treat this not as a plot hole but rather a representation of many conservatives hypocrisy
And he judges her for wanting to have a fradulent marriage to get insulin but then when money problems affect HIM PERSONALLY, he thinks it is a valid idea.
This movie is not a romance it is a horror film because I literally cannot think of anything more terrifying than having to marry a military dude/bigot to afford medication that I need to LIVE.
@@christopherbrown5409 Don’t really have beef with them ( I have many family members in different branches of the military.), just the military industrial complex and the many bigots that enforce it. It’s just horrifying what people have to go through just to get basic healthcare.

@@ahumuzamuzoora Yes. I'm pointing out how ridiculous this "both sides" narrative is when one side's position is, "I should have human rights being a human and all." And the other side's position is "Nuh uh."
When dude tried to hit her with that line "Not every guy you let into your life is a bad guy you can't trust." I had to pause it, I sat there for about a minute in silence and then yelled "You got drug dealers kicking in her mama door, bruh!"
I rolled my eyes so far back lmao like I'm like where did THAT come from. And it was so manipulative bc nah he had secrets of his own he didn't tell her. She was upfront
not to mention before their fake marriage, she asked him to be transparent with her and he manipulated her into agreeing blindly by throwing a tantrum and walking away. he is THE bad guy
It's the way the mariner was like "suck it up" to the girl who needed insulin to live while HE needs to owe thousands of dollars to a drug dealer from his past addiction. Trifling.
Thank you! If we follow his logic, his ass should be in prison for using illegal drugs. Did he care about the "government!!!" when he was higher than the Empire State Building? No. Does he care that the government's money he'll get will be used to fund a drug dealer? 🤔 The hypocrisy here is insane! Who wrote this movie?
to add insult to injury to the "not good enough to touch that ass" comment, are they seriously ignoring the fact that women (and others) are often assaulted by solders in active warzones as like a form of "payment" for their "services"? absolutely disgusting
Or sometimes as a form of revenge when the women are native to the country. My country was colonized for more than a century and many of my female ancestors had to go to extremes like tattoo their whole faces and cover themselves with animal filth so that the soldiers don‘t r*pe them.
They're not ignoring anything because that's not happening in this plot and its fresh meat in the military. Not all are destiny to do that. They didn't do it, come back home then say that line. What you're talking about has nothing to do with the movie and going off
Not even "active" warzones. Just anywhere Foreign Military Bases put their soldiers in. Like US Military Bases in East, SE, Central & West(Middle East) Asia.
I heard someone break down how you can't be enemies with someone, who you don't consider equal (in power). In other words respect & acknowledgement of the other persons capabilities. And how that is one of the core things that make enemies to lovers appealing. So ... yeah. This shit show had neither character development nor equality or respect.
People think enemies to lovers means beating the shit out of each other until you start making out, when in actuality you’re meant to grow as people and become better people alongside each other
I think my favorite part of everything involving the movie is the timing. Around a week or so after this movie released the Republican party successfully blocked a bill that would've put a cap on insulin prices. The very thing that would save a person like this Cassie's life and make it so that she didn't have to resort to a fake marriage. Sofia Carson said it's about the power of love making people passed their differences, but no love should be powerful enough to make you look passed someone who votes for people who don't even care if you live or die. Not to mention people who don't believe that you should have a right to say what you do with your body.
It’s literally military propaganda, I’m an Arab and the “hunting down Arabs” didn’t bother me as much as the clips of Luke and his homies being nice to the kids in Iraq, this doesn’t happen , ppl in these villages are treated like trash.
YO HEAVY ON THAT I WAS LIKE??? They would’ve shot that little boy like it was nothing. like y’all are literally bombing the hell outta their homes be fucking fr
Right? Same with abortion. Like, protesting outside a clinic, but as soon as they need one, they have a "good reason" and the next day they're back outside again.
@@blueace1000 yeah, they think they're the only one who has a good reason for an abortion, al the other people are just there for frivolous reasons. They're so much better than everyone else. Which incidentally is the same thing with this movie, he is unwilling to see things from her point of view, but he does expect her to put herself in his shoes.
I love how they had a chance to really say something about the absurdity of insulin prices in America but instead it's a romcom. I love being an insulin dependent diabetic living in America. It's so cool lmao. Also why tf is she a secret diabetic? We can literally die every hour on the hour that's so stupid lmao.
Honestly I can kinda understand the secretness. I'm not gonna watch the movie so I don't know what the reasoning is but for me I generally don't tell people because everyone turns into an endocrinologist and starts commenting on what I'm eating even though they are ALWAYS wrong!!So it's just easier not to say anything unless I have to. ALSO what was up with her 'diabetic symptoms'?!?! It looked like she was going hypoglycemic?!?! But she took insulin?!?! Thy should show her constantly going to the bathroom and always thirsty!!
@@djcobrand117 That is a fair point, wish they had tried to depict what fighting misinformation like that feels like. I personally let everyone around me know because hypos come out of nowhere for me and I can't feel them until I'm in the 50s. @FiaLia ooh ok that makes sense. If my hypos were like that I would probably tell more people too. Nah you’re describing academic *rivals* to lovers, enemies to lovers is really only in fantasy books where they are literally enemies and fight each other but fall in love etc. But yeah this film was a sh*tshow
Nah because this. Every "enemies to lovers" is like "he emotionally and sometimes physically abused them for years but it was because he sad boy so she forgives him and has had a crush the whole time"
@@shailaadia974 rivals to lovers is the healthy version of the trope. The whole point of toxic romance as a genre is that it's bad. You can't fix enemies to lovers, it's a power fantasy thing about saving villains
I thought they were trying to show basically that you never know what people are going through especially healthwise and to show how desperate diabetics need insulin. Plus it was also forshadowing Luke's drug problem which was ironic because you would think the bigoted conservative would not be the one who had the drug problem. It shows that not everything is black and white and how the system does not acknowledge this at all. Also it's more theatrical but I think that was what ruined the message for most people. That was my take on it and I'm pretty sure the producers were trying to convey this perspective but I guess it failed for most people. 😬
I think enemies to lovers only works when there is a misunderstanding but aligned common goal. We can’t be on opposite ends of the spectrum. We need the mea culpa.
Enemies to lovers only works if they actually hate each other but find out they’re actually more alike than they thought. This movie is just a girl forced to marry someone because she doesn’t she’ll die
Or if the commonality is that they're on opposite sides of a shared conflict and realize that they've been _taught_ their prejudices by the enemy and therefore can _choose to unlearn_ them (i.e. Nina and Matthias from Six of Crows)
@@abbywolffe4114 so glad someone mentioned Nina and Matthias bc they are one of the best examples of an enemies to lovers trope (one that does involve prejudice) done right.
See I don't like 'enemies' based in misunderstanding, I want them to legit start off on opposite sides and then rethink their original goals and realize they were both wrong...which doesn't work when one side is "I don't think all humans deserve to have human rights" and the other is "I will die if I don't get my medication"
My dad is ex military and he’s one of the biggest anti-military people I’ve ever encountered. He told me not to date, join, or support the military in any way and even used shit he’s seen, like the blatant bigotry he’d see as a source. Thanks dad, you didn’t give me much but at least you prevented a mistake like this.
Yoooo same my dad told me not to date anyone who is in the military. Welp I am currently with an ex military guy and my boyfriend and my dad be talkin they shit about the military but my dad still reps it to the gods. While my boyfriend wishes he never joined and he evens mentioned that he had seen so many people marry for BHA and genuinely thought no one could get arrested by it because it was so common and nobody got caught while he was in. When I say that I remember at one point the military from dad’s old base started to suspect ppl of getting married for BHA; they started saying nobody can get married if they are 18-21 or just joined. It’s was lowkey really entertaining to hear since a lot of my high school friends had joined and were tryin to get married so fast
Lol both my parents were military, but my dad was staunchly against me joining when I showed interest. My dad was enlisted and my mom was an officer though, dunno if that made the difference.
dude same, my dad is *old* so he joined when being sent into the military was still an alternative to jail in small crimes and he was like “the people who were the worst were the people who voluntarily joined. now we have a whole army full of them and they can do whatever the hell they want. it’s the bastardization of a defense force into a government-sponsored mercenary group.”
@@yay-depression Yep it takes a certain mentality and personality type. Most of the ppl who want a job like that (something where they wield power over others) are usually the last who should be trusted with it.

I haven’t seen the movie but I read the book, and it’s not even close to being a triumphant revenge story. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion, and even though you can sympathize with what Carrie is going through and you understand what pushed her over the edge, she’s obviously the bad guy. Honestly anyone reading this comment, go read Carrie. It’s pretty short (I think 200 pages) and so good.
I think she should read the book and then she would get it. I read it as a teenager and then happened to catch it on TV one night. It’s still one of my favorite horror movies but I have noticed it's harder for people to get the themes and motivations from just watching the movie.
My favourite trope in these military propaganda pieces (which these are) is when the military love interest is like “you just sit here while we go to war and fight for this country”. Like, sir, what war? Invading impoverished countries and killing the locals for profit? That war? Made funnier compounded with the “I’m scared to go to war!” scene, ‘cause it’s, like, bro, no one’s making you go, this isn’t a draft situation, just don’t join the military lmao. An absolutely wretched genre of film.
Even sadder is that most people who join the military are poor themselves. They kill other poor people for other people/corporations profit while they’ll most likely struggle to make ends meet when they get out.
this movie was the epitome of “You cant judge someone for their political beliefs” like yes, yes you can. esp when their beliefs are harmful and are a complete disregard for human rights 😭
This can go both ways. Conservatives can 100% make this argument too. “The belief in abortion on demand is harmful and a complete disregard to the basic human right to life.” We have a much better argument than you all saying that we disregard human life by opposing free healthcare. The reason we oppose “free healthcare” is because nothing in life is free, having free healthcare means infinitely higher taxes for everyone, as well as crappy medical services. I know several people who have lived in these government healthcare countries and they have some horrible stories. Insulin prices are awful and we need to be having conversations about how to help those who can’t afford it purchase it, for sure, but just because we oppose this specific proposal, don’t think we want these people to die. Btw yeah you can judge someone for their political beliefs, especially in dating. Generally, date people with the same political beliefs as you because you need to have common goals and ideals. But you can be friends with people across the political isle. One of my best friends is very liberal and we have some very controversial conversations but I’ve learned a lot from him and he’s learned a lot from me. We need to have more civil disagreement in this country.
lol ok Lisa geez Mmmh you think you can judge people by their beliefs?? Oh then don’t get mad when someone harms you for wanting freedom Lol we are saying y’all believe are trash hence you are trash Not that just because it’s different you are trash

I CAN NOT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH HOW MUCH THIS IS NOT FRAUD. People literally marry the stripper they met last night (no shade to strippers, all shade to the military member) I’ve seen people marry others so they can move out of the barracks. You can’t prove a marriage is “fake”, especially since affection/love is not a requirement. Not to mention I’ve seen actual crimes be swept under the rug, this ain’t going to court martial
Right !? How could you prove its fake? If they weren't so righteous they could get away with it without breaking a sweat. They dont even have to act all sweet and lovie dovie to each other. They just have to live together and mind their own business. And is it even so significant to prove a marriage is fraud lol like there's so many illegal things to bring to court and they wasted their time on this 💀
my boyfriend who was in the National Guard got so angry about this and kept screaming at the TV lmao. they did everything legally. there’s no laws against marrying someone for convenience. that’s not a thing.
THANK YOU. Oh my god, this comment thread was so insightful. As an aromantic, I literally couldn't understand the significance of romance in a marriage. Like, I know for some people it's important but I didn't think it was that big of a deal if you didn't like each other in that way and still chose to marry for convenience. That whole aspect of the movie left me really confused- I thought there was just something I wasn't getting that I fundamentally didn't understand. I feel less stupid now.
Haha I deployed with a girl that was a very out and proud lesbian, before same sex marriage was legal, and she married a guy for the benefits. No one cared at all. Paperwork was filed correctly, and that is all the Military cares about.
Hate how these "liberal vs republican" pieces are never the republican changing their attitude towards thinking people don't deserve basic human rights and is always the liberal agree to disagree-ing with someone who doesn't see them as a person. I can't get over how serious he was about turning his friend into the police for even talking about possibly committing fraud and telling her to go die but when a fake marriage became beneficial to him all of a sudden he didn't care about the fact that he was committing a crime.
Yeah it's not like this was a true story. They could have made him less of a hypocritical dick. Like maybe have him initially not like the idea of the fake marriage, because he views serving in the military as a chance to redeem himself for his past fuck ups and doesn't want to do anything else illegal, i.e. he sees it as a risk he doesn't want to take, not that he thinks letting this woman die is the morally right thing to do.
I typically find this common with white liberals who date conservative men. It was very funny seeing them make tiktoks about breaking up with their boyfriends because now their bigotry affects them. Like Kelly, we didn't think to leave him when he made fun of your POC friends?

Can't say I'm not surprised at all lmao. I've even geard conservative men on dating apps are trying to pretend they are moderate because even conservative girls don't want them 🤣. The thing with those men is that they will be staunchly conservative and against peoples rights but don't understand why they're seen as undesirable to the other side and POC.
These people don't have POC friends. They're liberal where the most people can see them and they can get likes for it, and then switch it off when it becomes inconvenient 🙄
It’s like how there are lgbt conservatives who then are condemned by their “fellow man”, they actively hate them but they think that they can be a part of the conservative party and continue to live as lgbt just because they hate poc and hate the poor, like no duh?! @@barachel6469 probably because said "soul sucking job" would have done jack shit for her healthcare and insulin needs, she most likely saw the marriage as an easier way to get her insulin because she'd be getting paid a decent amount, she gets the healthcare benefits from being married to a marine (which from what I saw during the movie seemed free of charge? could definitely be wrong though) and people only started taking her diabetes serious after she got married to him and could financially support the costs of insulin. definitely no excuse for marrying such a pathetic man but on her end, it definitely seemed like an easier path to take.
It terrifies me to see how many people actually genuinely enjoyed this movie and sees it like a lil cute romcom, when it's kinda military propaganda 😭 like what the actual f? edit: i know it's not downright military propaganda in the sense that it doesn't make you go "mmm, maybe joining the military is kinda cool" but in the sense that "marines/soldiers don't care about human rights and it's ok because they fight for your country and face no repercutions for their fascist comments/povs and they also get better healthcare"

My thoughts on the movie in general: The fact that so many people liked it and kind of overlooked the racist, sexist and misogynistic bullsh*t portrayed by some of the characters (including the male lead), and only focused on how 'cute' and 'romantic' the movie was. Shines a HUGE light on how people will see nothing wrong with a person's beliefs or mindset, because, you know "they're a likeable person. They don't really mean that in a racist/misogynistic way." What I’m so confused about is why did Cassie not tell her coworkers she has TYPE 1 DIABETES!! That’s a pretty serious thing to know in case of medical emergencies which she’s very vulnerable to if she can’t afford insulin. I swear they framed her using insulin to mirror Luke’s drug addiction and that’s so fucked for so many reason

I noticed a trend specifically in enemies to lovers of creating sympathy through making characters disabled for a period and it's really weird. Being disabled doesn't automatically make someone a better person
You aren't lying, I love a good enemies to lovers story. But the way they are using disabilities to create sympathy for a a**hole character. Is driving me crazy, the use a disability instead of having the character grow and learn. That is why I am very picky with my enemies to lovers stories now
not to mention that it indirectly implies that being disabled makes you above reproach. You cant acknowledge and validate someone's humanity if you think they shouldn't be disagreed with or criticized (esspecially on the basis of the presence of a marginalized identity. It only shows you dont interact with marginalized identities regularly). also this movie couldve been 0.1% better if the musician suffered an illness and the marine had to overcome his prejudices in the process of nursing her back to health by experiencing her heathcare related struggles as her caretaker. its never the guy that has to care for the woman in movies.but thats hardly the movie's biggest problem. not even in the top 10.
Exactly, there’s never any actual good disability rep. At one point both main characters were disabled, but it honestly feels insulting to me, as a disabled person. I could never call this a disabled love story. The dude was still an absolute ass. It doesn’t portray the community in a positive light. And acts like disabled ppl can’t be three dimensional good and bad ppl.
I think the worst part about movies with the whole lib/con fall in love arc is that most times in real life, women who are in these types of relationships: where the man is a white conservative and they aren’t, usually end up assimilating into what the man wants. They end up losing their whole identity and their views and opinions are drowned out by their partners views.
A lot of the time the reason the woman's values and beliefs are the ones that get changed and trampled on is because he's a bigot to his core and would have to literally swap lives with a marginalised person for several years to even begin to change. He wants a hot girlfriend and doesn't give a sh*t what she believes because to him women having political opinions is akin to his dog having opinions about what bags he uses to pick up after it: amusing and sometimes frustrating, but ultimately meaningless. As long as she'll put out, he couldn't care less. Meanwhile she's someone who claims to want an equal and respectful partnership but is willing to date a guy who thinks half her friends should have all their rights removed. Like, if you're willing to be with someone who so fundamentally contradicts everything you believe in in such an active way, including within your own relationship, then you probably don't have such a firm grasp on those beliefs in the first place.
Happened to my mom, my grandmum is a bi hippie icon and somehow my mom decided to marry a racist bigot and ignore everything she grew up on. Make it make sense.
The funniest part of this movie is that the characters have this concern of "Acting like a loving couple" but reality is that nobody would give a shit. Military men could beat their wives or only talk to them once a month and nobody would ask question. Its toxic
Lol that was literally my thought, like, why they gotta pretend to like each other?? Conservatives aren't gonna care if his wife seems happy or in love, he could never touch her and be incredibly distant and no one would bat an eye. In fact, fake marrying someone you fundamentally hate and who has no respect for you as a person is just plain marriage to some people. One could say it was the most traditional kind of marriage: a transactional one.
This movie is hilarious for so many reasons 1. Military insurance sucks. My husband (the vet) can't even get braces in our city 2. They DO NOT need to go through all the fake crap with the relationship. After he was deployed no one would have said much about them not talking, especially with the timezone differences between anywhere in the US and the middle east. After he came back, however, is a different story. 3. Considering there's only so much he can spend his money on (soldiers have limited roaming in cities over there) he should have long been able to pay off the dealer 4. Ain't no way the bureaucratic hell hole that is the United States military got their marriage processed in time for him to be set up for separation pay and his raise
May I add one thing, if he weren’t just deploying, there would be no way in hell she would have gotten her military ID that quickly. I get that there are time skips because we don’t see the full time, but as dependents, my mom’s and my IDs took hours to get. First, waiting for our number to called even when arriving early and than the paperwork and than the actual ID? How did they het hers so quickly.
I noticed the same thing. My ex husband is military, and it took FOREVER to recognize me as his wife, and we got married two days after he finished basic. He was at his first duty station for well over 2 months before I finally got my ID, SOFA passport (stationed in Germany) and insurance. We even got back pay from those months I wasn’t on his paperwork even though we was married.
Yooo, I thought the same, like, I went throught all the shit to get like, married on paper, yo it's so long and complicated and hard ?? You have to find the right forms, you have to go to city town hall when it's open, you have to find someone to marry you... I live in Canada, but like, no way they can just, idk, manage all that in like two days or something. Especially when it looks like kinda a small town ?
@@lasagnacreamcone in America marrying someone for benefits is illegal cuz that means the government would have to support people :/ its not uncommon for people to go through with green card marriages and people to marry service members for the reasons stated in the movie

Everytime they use the phrase "fight for you" "fight battles" "defend you" I lose ten years off my life. Especially because the military of my country HAS saved my ass because we actually have an active threat in our neighbors. The American civilians know NOTHING about being fought for.
Unfortunately we’re raised on phrases like that that perpetuate the delusion that the military is “defending our freedoms” and many people sadly never question it
Worked with a couple like this. A black 'liberal' woman and a white 'conservative' man. They loved each other. He regularly though talked trash about BLM and talked about how much he loved Trump. It was the most wild shit to witness. (This is in Canada too, like bro wtf)
Hey, asking out of curiosity, is it not possible to be a Republican, and not be sexist, homophobic, or racist? Like, those aren't the only things in politics? Is it not possible that u agree with other political decision of one side, but don't have any probs with human rights?
@@someone3195 not really with the way the system is set up right now. Republican's stance on economics and government are tied to racist sexist religious beliefs. It also prioritises capitalism and the interests of their donors, leading to more people getting poorer in order to satisfy their rich friends. you could be right-leaning and not outright republican but I wouldn't recommend it, since capitalism is quickly turning to fascism nowadays
Oh yes, the conservative dream: This woman will be forced to take care of me and because of that she will grow to LOVE me because women LOVE taking care of GROWN ASS MEN!
I sincerely doubt any genuine conservative man would want to get together with a woman who may potentially murder their child, or mutilate their genitals.
You know what’s even more sad? The people who warned me to never date a military man were former military men and military wives. So there’s definitely truth to not dating that demographic apparently 👀
I know this is mostly from american perspective and no one asked this. But I live in a country where soon-to-be-wife of military men had to go through virginity test for no reason at all. Even new military women had to go through this test. They think doing sex outside marriage is some type of mental health issue. You can say, a lot of us women just nope tf out when we met military men. That test just got erased a year ago. It was horrible.
@@tapewoerm I remember there was some study where they did that hymen test (on women who volunteered) and lots of virgins were deemed not virgins and there were literal pregnant women who were deemed virgins lol
Dude the way this concept could've been okay, like imagine a kid getting dooped into the military (because the military crawls around schools like parasites) and he's lost and stuck in the military and he meets someone who understands him, and the movie really shows how the government hurts people but there's also a love story there. I wish.
That would be cool although I heard that if films want to borrow stuff from the US military or film on military bases, they have make a deal with the US Department of Defense that basically says they can’t depict the military in a bad light lol. That’s why a lot of military or superhero films in the US have military propaganda.
I think I manifested this... I literally went "man, I hope Kennie covers this movie so I can know what happens without having to watch it" this morning and here she is, coming to save me from my own curiosity
so tired of seeing this crappy "middle ground" message being spread around in media like this movie. it always ends up with the people who already get the short end of the stick reaching across the table, but never reciprocated. AND when they speak up, they are "too agressive" and need to "understand the other side", but like kendall said, the other side never makes any concessions
Her: I have learned to ignore your and your friends' toxic traits, racism, and support of genocide because ❤+💙=💜🥰 Him: I will consider being less racist around you, because it's annoying when you're upset 🥰
I will always blame centrists for this type of trope. " I won't allow politics to affect my relationship 😌❤️" is just another way of saying, "I'm not affected by my partner's believes, so I don't have to care about people that are".
More like traditional conservative marriages where young girls are forced into relationships/traditional marriages to survive while anti-everyone husbands have to be tolerated to keep the peace and benefits. Sounds old southern to me.
It's mind baffling how so many people will date people whose views affects the lives of others (Minorities) and will shrug their shoulders until it affects them. Absolute selfishness
Wait, for the enemies to lovers trope in general? I'm kinda wary of people who dislike or don't interact with anyone that isn't on their side of the political spectrum. They're not really tolerant in general, assuming they don't have anything to learn from or about the other side. It's implying everyone must be like them. Centrists, contrary to stereotypes, aren't cowards who sit on a fence, don't wanna help, are ignorant, or secretly just right. I've seen left-leaning centrists and Democratic centrists. Left/Right doesn't mean Democrat/Republican. The most mature politically differing couples I've seen tend to vote for policies, not parties, be communicative, and don't partake in treating politicians like BTS members they obsess over. It's also a different look than "Caucasian guy x POC", it's more often that I see 2 white or non-white ppl. There are different ideas of socialism in each person's head, just like capitalism, and it's why I typically want to get to know a person's mind better before I make a judgement. Not to say that opposing people don't ever get together bc they put their attraction above their compatibility. It happens with religion too. But as with those kinds of couples, it's more grey than you think.
@@spaghetto9836 There's a reason republican conservatives are associated with being racist and going against the rights of poor people and POC. They literally have a history of it. Most POC will avoid these types because they legitamely see you as lesser so it's hypocritical of a white Democrat who believes the opposite to date someone who believes that crap. There is a common occurrence among republican states of favoring businesses over people and reducing the rights of women whenever they can.
This movie is literally one big gaslighting session, telling us somehow the girl who wants to stay alive is being “dramatic” and the military guy is some sort of hero and not just a bigot.
What are you all stupid. The idea of the film is taken from the book of the same name "Purple Hearts" by Tess Wickfried. At least one of you has read the book. Before judging Luke's character. I advise you to read the book. The book is completely different. Cassie is not a feminist in the book. In the film, Cassie was cruel to the man who helped her, gave her money and medical insurance, and at the same time he went to war involuntarily. And if he died, and not Frankie, then you would probably all be delighted. Cassie is no better than Luke. She used a man. The film is more like a performance by Sofia Carson than a romantic drama. Sofia Carson is a bad actress.
I dated a military man and it was the most toxic relationship I ever had. The guy disrespected my opinions claiming I "care about strangers more than my own loved ones" just because I feel upset that innocent people are getting killed. He says that to improve the country, we need "more discipline" like in Japan. When I talked about an incident that happened broadcasting on the news where an off-duty policeman killed a family in the family's own home because their kids bullied the policeman's kid, he said that it would be better if "we gave weapons to the family who got killed to battle with the off-duty policeman to make it fair". He also tried many times to break my boundaries and tried to pressure me to do intimate stuff with him even though I didn't want to. I was stupid, but I learned my lesson. NEVER EVER date anyone in the military. NEVER!
Don’t call yourself stupid. I imagine you initially thought this guy was a decent human being and then were bamboozled by his disgusting behavior. You got out of there. Good for you!
there’s something deeply disturbing about realizing that the fans Sofia Carson gained while she was a part of the descendants franchise are now old enough to watch this movie (most likely without their parents’ knowledge) and get manipulated into the romanticization of this blatant military propaganda. i can’t help but feel like Netflix knew what it was doing in casting her in this role, knowing the young and very impressionable audience her involvement would pull. the thought of my little sister watching this movie and believing it to be romantic or something to aspire to in any is beyond disgusting to me.
@@chickenisindeedmystyle7316 respectfully, I have to disagree. 11-17 year-olds are arguably one of the most easily influenced populations and are young enough to not fully understand the true intentions and horrors of media like this. predatory behaviours and overall disgusting actions can easily go over a child’s head because they don’t know any better. there’s a reason why 20-something-year-olds are just now realising how problematic shows like Pretty Little Liars are instead of realising it when they were literal children. the same thing goes for Shane Dawson viewers who absolutely adored his content as kids only to realise its paedophilic tones and blatant racisms as adults. when you’re between these ages, you don’t really know who you are and media is one way that children explore their identity. they look to it to find relatability and something to aspire to. unfortunately, being so young often times results in children idolising harmful forms of media such as this one. to put all of the responsibility on the children to know better feels reductive.
As someone who was a teen watching her in her descendant years. Yes I did watch this cause she was in it but I agree the actions they did weren’t right. Sofia is a great singer cause I do have some songs of her album but this film’s songs I couldn’t really listen to them so I skipped those scenes. As an adult I know how bad it is too
@@salmamichelle09 we don't put the responsibilities on the children to know better, we should be putting it on the children's parents. that's a reason why purple hearts is rated 16+, you can't put all the blame on netflix just because "children might get the wrong idea" because the movie wasn't for children in the first place. and casting sofia carson... idk, maybe she got bills to pay and wanted to take on more adult roles? what did you expect her to do? stay playing kiddie roles just because she has more younger following?
That's the thing that gets me. Would a Rachel Platten-sounding pop band (and no, that is NOT a compliment) open for an alt legend like Florence? I know Cassie's band was described as alt in the movie but musically they don't have anything in common with Florence, so...why Florence? I hope she got paid for that namedrop.
As a European from a country with, while not entirely free and universal but affordable and mandatory healthcare for all, the entire premise of this movie is complete nonsense to me. How the heck does a country exist where you can't get insulin because your insurance doesn't cover it or because you don't have insurance in the first place? The more I learn about the US, the more it confuses me ngl.
Welcome to the dystopian, late stage-capitalist hellscape that's the U.S., bud. At least half of our government will happily see us dead/suffering if it means that they and their rich buddies can keep their pockets bloated and themselves in seats of power, and they've managed to brainwash a not-insignificant number of citizens here that this is a good thing and that improvements/progress are evil and scary (Reagan seems to have really kick-started these horrific mindsets and policies back in the 80s). 🙃
Even Brazil, that is not by any means a rich/developed country, doesn't have this problem. I think it's very sad that people in US doesn't have at least some free health care...

As a diabetic I genuinely need to know who in Hollywood was told that diabetes is kept secret with the same stigma around it was early 90's AIDS. Because this is not the first time I have seen this happen in movies or tv and the concept is just wild to me.
Lol I remember thinking the same thing about Babysitter's Club and Dawn's diabetes back in the late 90s. I thought it was so dumb she was embarrassed for having a disease she has no control over and I was in elementary school then!
That's really hilarious, while my family members and my friends who have diabetes can just go and by some diabetic products in a shopping mall . How suddle is that IRL😄
I'm stuck on Luke threatening to report her for trying to marry her friend for the insurance when the military wouldn't really care if they were/are legally married for a decent amount of time. Like so many people join the military just for the benefits and are vocal about it.
RIGHT. I know most people in the Army branch specifically that joined for college benefits. It’s not insane for someone to marry for the benefits. We’ve all heard those “private marries the first stripper he sees” stories💀💀
I’m thinking about the genre of “bigot+poc romance,” and my least favorite examples of it. Then I realized something. Why is it always a woman of color and white man? Why is that the case? Hm. Seems gross. Kinda fetishizing. Very fetishizing.
Part of it is likely because these shit stains would never tolerate a white woman being with a non-white guy, especially if said guy is any shade of brown or black (Birth of a Nation, along with certain real life cases involving white women and black boys/men are proof enough of this). And there's also something to be said about how a not-insignificant number of these "men" likely fantasize about dominating a WOC (the fetishization of WOC runs deep and without pause - from black women during the times of slavery, to the Jim Crow era, and even today; to the countless indigenous women who've been assaulted, murdered, abducted, and specifically targeted, from the times of colonization to now; to Asian women (namely East Asian) who are lusted after in ways that treat them as though they're all expected to be tiny, submissive "waifus" *GAG*, and even in ways that edge way too close to being pedophilic in how certain traits that some may possess are honed in on; to the Latina women who are often treated as "fiery" and "exotic" commodities; to the fact that race-based porn categories are even a thing); to the fact that numerous white women have been caught altering their appearances to look desirably "exotic" or more racially ambiguous *side-eyes Ariana Grande*). 🙃🙃🙃

The way they portrayed diabetes in this movie kinda pissed me off, my boyfriend has type one and he has been made fun of for it his whole life, I even lost friends over it because they thought it was okay to continually make jokes, it’s not something that should be hidden and done in a bathroom as if it was heroin it’s a real illness that already has a lot of stigma around it, I feel like all this movie does is reinforce that stigma - maybe I’m reading too much into it but it really rubbed me the wrong way
Is there really a stigma around it? And is it possible that the stigma is just in America for some reason (assuming you're American ofc). Because here in Czech republic, I don't think I remember a single time I've heard anyone say anything even slightly problematic about diabetes, or talk about it as if it's some sort of taboo or shameful secret or whatever. One classmate of mine who had type 1, once literally took his insulin shot in the middle of a class, in front of 40 people, and no one bat an eyelash (...Ok, one girl did, but that was because she was agressively terrified of needles). HI KENNIE! Navy Veteran here! Yes, you can be charged under the UCMJ for a fraudulent marriage if you do a bad job of pretending. Example: A service member married for BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) but does not move their spouse with them, and they get caught sleeping with other people. It will be safe to assume (unless they're GeoBach, where their spouse can't move with them, in that case it'll be documented) that they only got married for benefits. I have never seen a command prosecute someone for a fraud marriage when they actually pretended to be together. I've seen PLENTY of people marry for the benefits and pretend to love each other for show. PLENTY! Also, this man went to PRISON and they just glossed over that like it's no big deal. MILITARY PRISON HAS THE SAME NEGATIVE LEGAL CONSEQUENCES AS FEDERAL PRISON. He is a convicted felon. He no longer gets medical coverage through TRICARE or the VA once he is separated under a dishonorable discharge. He no longer gets any veterans benefits (education, bah, health care, home loans) once he is separated. This means the girl still has a dilemma of finding health insurance coverage for her insulin! This is hard because it's a preexisting condition, a lot of insurance policies don't cover preexisting conditions. And good luck getting a well paying job when you're a felon convicted of committing fraud 🤯. Also also, they never showed the investigation. Anyone investigating them would obviously see these two have feelings and proof of a relationship that others could see (family BBQs, deployment video chats, letters, emails etc ) this it'll throw the whole case away. It would never be serious enough to go to Court Martial (military court). 🙄. The most that'll happen is that they'll get NJP'd (Non-Judicial Punishment, aka your command decides your fate) and he would get a slap on the wrist. Again, this would be if they found evidence that they strictly married for benefits. But anyone within a 10mi radius could see they liked each other. Also also also.........the uniforms 😭 why can they never get them right in movies!? Also also also also, his injury was pretty severe and they made it seem like he healed in a few weeks. This is unrealistic and they should've shown more struggles of how they deal the with it together which helped them grow. Instead they did a sensual bath that caused an instant connection 🤔. The bath and shower were a problem for him, so how was he bathing this entire time? Also x5, if he's injured like that, the military will rehouse them to suit his disabilities while he's healing. They would never have a handicap person in a three story walk up. Nope. They would use a Fisher House (crowd funded housing for injuries) for veterans or he would be in the Wounded Warrior Battalion (WWBN) which is an actual unit dedicated to the mental and physical healing of injured veterans on med boards for separation or Limited Duty for an extended period of time to heal after surgery or things like that. WWBN has its own handicapped barracks, mental health clinic, gym, group activities, etc. When I worked in Pain Management we worked closely with WWBN. Also x6. This movie is about 15 years past it's prime 🤣. Back when war tensions we're heated (early 2000s) this would've been a great movie. But now that things are calming down, I wonder why this was the plot? That he gets injured in war? Dear John was released as a book in 2007 and a movie in 2010. This movie is late to the party for war movies 🤣
THANK YOU for this!!!!! Aside from the horrid character “development” in this flaming dumpster of a movie, the thing that makes me so frustrated about this is how blatantly obvious that no one with any real awareness/knowledge of military life (whether it be a veteran like you or a lifelong dependent like me) was behind the scenes working on it. Like yeah, there are plenty of guys like him, but cmooooonnnnnnnnnn-this is so overhanded and idiotic, especially on the flagrant things you pointed out.

I know absolutely nothing about the military, but I am a stickler for accuracy when movies or shows are made about a particular profession or a skill or anything that requires proper RESEARCH. Like, making a movie about something and then getting everything about it wrong is embarrassing. How are filmmakers not embarrassed by that?! I don’t get it lol
dude, i grew up military and hearing he got COURT MARSHALLED cause a drug dealer said he was faked married floored me because i thought that was for capital crimes not helping a girl get healthcare. them not staying in military housing was weird too!! my sisters and i assume the military requires uniforms to be off for safety reasons (i.e. someone can make one by watching TV then sneak on base to do who knows what) or whatever. i only paid half attention to military stuff growing up, but oh my god it's just so obvious that they just googled uniforms and the military legal system. he got court marshalled for a fake marriage? the military would go through all of that for something that's gotta be a dime a dozen thing but not the actual crimes we occasionally hear about servicemembers commiting 👀
She’s a type one diabetic who spaces out her insulin to preserve it. That’s not AT ALL how type one diabetes works 🤣🤣🤣 they keep it a secret because nobody researched it to figure out how it’s different from type two. All they knew was insulin is expensive and people with type one are more likely to be skinny and just moved on. 🤷🏽♀️
THIS THOUGH! If she is using syringes, she would have two different types of insulin and would NOT be able to keep it a secret. Also when she is supposedly going low but having not taken ANY insulin prior to the low bloodsugar? NOOOOOOOO!
it is something us diabetics have had to do at some point. space out the insulin through out several days until we get paid next. whether that be eating less or taking less her dose. it be like that here in america.
Gotta love how neatly the last act comes together when the marine WILLINGLY chooses to stop paying his vErY ScaRy dealer money he DEFINITELY has even though he knows this man has the power to destroy him and his family due to illegal information he WILLINGLY shared, and how instead of just coming together to AVOID JAIL AND A DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE he just decides to go to jail. This is our male hero ladies, the bar has turned into a land mine.
It’s actually crazy how realistic it would be for a Marine to marry someone within 1-3 months of meeting. My niece was engaged to a Marine after a month of dating and very pregnant by the wedding. Marines really are out here just looking for a bride. (I fixed it! Sorry for any confusion caused).
@Day what they said is true though. People in the military are always asking me to get married and something seems really off about them. Exactly, it’s like they want to audience to somehow side with him or see him as “likable” since he’s the calm and stoic one and she’s “crazy and annoying”
Thing that confused me the most is, is it really a fake/fraudulent marriage if you are actually legally married? People have gotten married for economic reasons for almost all of history and those marriages were never invalidated. it is not a part of the law that people in marriages must have romantic feelings so why is that an issue in this specific case?
it's a crime of intention kind of thing. they are marrying for the healthcare benefits and say so out loud and do this in full knowledge and agreement with each other. lol they agree out loud to commit fraud. kind of how like firing people isn't illegal but firing people for being gay(etc.) is a crime. and so evidence like getting married very suddenly and not being actually in love and other stuff builds a case against you that you're trying to do fraud because typically people don't flaunt the fact that they're doing crimes, especially ones like fraud.
That is such a good point and so hypocritical of any system that says otherwise. Women have literally been traded off with dowries and all sorts of things. Romance in marriage is actually a more modern luxury (where that applies- there are still forced marriages). I’m not the biggest history buff, but women were always getting married off to this guy or that. And before women were properly allowed in the workplace, marriage was sort of a necessity. There was definitely an economic factor there. But none of that makes it less valid. However, this Republican style propaganda would say otherwise. But you can bet if you tried to switch it to be like “okay, so love equals marriage, not a piece of paper. Then gay people deserve to be married.” they would do mental gymnastics to get out of that one.
Legal studies major here! With any marriage of benefits where the benefits are coming from the government, the process for verifying that is "real" is very similar to what they show in The Proposal. They ask questions about the other to see that they "know each other" and they interview people in your life like who you work for and family. As long as you don't seem like Surface strangers, it's a "real" marriage.

I'm from Tunisia, and historically the leading nations in women's rights in the arab world were both Tunisia and Iraq... Unfortunately now it's not looking good for Iraqi women cuz of the repetitive violence in your country after the wrongful invasion .. Reports are scary af.. They pull out the women rights cards while still irresponsibly pulling out of Afghanistan and we know how that affected Afghan women... Hell did people forget about the horrendous crimes committed against Iraqi women by men in uniforms? Girls and women were among the victims btw.. The reason people love enemies to lovers is because there is CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. The concept doesn't work if no one changes from beginning to end.
And enemies to lovers only works if they have the same level of power/have the same goal
I heard someone break down how you can't be enemies with someone, who you don't consider equal (in power). In other words respect & acknowledgement of the other persons capabilities. And how that is one of the core things that make enemies to lovers appealing. So ... yeah.

I thought they were trying to show basically that you never know what people are going through especially healthwise and to show how desperate diabetics need insulin.
Or if one of them, or both, ideally, actually change!! See: Pride and Prejudice, the original enemies to lovers!

My favourite trope in these military propaganda pieces (which these are) is when the military love interest is like “you just sit here while we go to war and fight for this country”.
@@talkswithtaylor5345 she said that after she got married

As a poc with diabetes, this is awful and true. I have had multiple problems with pharmacies where I literally go, I need this now or I might die and they go "aww too bad". They don't really mean that in a racist/misogynistic way." I could have worded this better but movies like this aren't cute, they just normalize and romanticize problematic behaviour.

That is why I am very picky with my enemies to lovers stories now
Too true, take Johnny Joestar for example!
not to mention that it indirectly implies that being disabled makes you above reproach.
I never noticed that, but you are so right!!

Lol that was literally my thought, like, why they gotta pretend to like each other?? Conservatives aren't gonna care if his wife seems happy or in love, he could never touch her and be incredibly distant and no one would bat an eye. Fr they tried to finesse that “fake dating” story so badly but it failed. Literally no one gives a fuck
These people don’t understand what marriage fraud is at all💀
This movie is hilarious for so many reasons
1. Military insurance sucks. My husband (the vet) can't even get braces in our city
2. They DO NOT need to go through all the fake crap with the relationship. After he was deployed no one would have said much about them not talking, especially with the timezone differences between anywhere in the US and the middle east. After he came back, however, is a different story.
3. Considering there's only so much he can spend his money on (soldiers have limited roaming in cities over there) he should have long been able to pay off the dealer
NEVER!
Plus most of them cheat on their partners
You're probably not stupid if you learned something and have never done it again, give yourself some credit 🙂
im so sorry u were in that situation, i hope ure okay bb💞

I can't breathe omg🤣🤣🤣
there’s something deeply disturbing about realizing that the fans Sofia Carson gained while she was a part of the descendants franchise are now old enough to watch this movie (most likely without their parents’ knowledge) and get manipulated into the romanticization of this blatant military propaganda.
i can’t help but feel like Netflix knew what it was doing in casting her in this role, knowing the young and very impressionable audience her involvement would pull. the thought of my little sister watching this movie and believing it to be romantic or something to aspire to in any is beyond disgusting to me.
Nah that’s on them; they’re old enough to not get manipulated by this shit
@@chickenisindeedmystyle7316 respectfully, I have to disagree. 11-17 year-olds are arguably one of the most easily influenced populations and are young enough to not fully understand the true intentions and horrors of media like this.
predatory behaviours and overall disgusting actions can easily go over a child’s head because they don’t know any better. there’s a reason why 20-something-year-olds are just now realising how problematic shows like Pretty Little Liars are instead of realising it when they were literal children. the same thing goes for Shane Dawson viewers who absolutely adored his content as kids only to realise its paedophilic tones and blatant racisms as adults.
when you’re between these ages, you don’t really know who you are and media is one way that children explore their identity. they look to it to find relatability and something to aspire to. unfortunately, being so young often times results in children idolising harmful forms of media such as this one.
to put all of the responsibility on the children to know better feels reductive.
yeah this is def a reach
The fact that they had to drag Florence and the Machine into this dumpster fire is just salt into an already festering wound
For real! If one good thing comes out of this nastiness, it would be more people checking out Florence.
That's the thing that gets me. Would a Rachel Platten-sounding pop band (and no, that is NOT a compliment) open for an alt legend like Florence?
As a US citizen, Im confused as well.

@@angelajohnsonkeys4199 I think it was Stacey not Dawn haha
Yea thats fucking weird
Very fetishizing.
also patriarchal + racist,,, like its about men having power of women, esp minority women

One last thing! One of my biggest issues with this movie was how the couple were basically walking stereotypes of a liberal and a conservative. Literally no personality outside of their political beliefs

The way they portrayed diabetes in this movie kinda pissed me off, my boyfriend has type one and he has been made fun of for it his whole life, I even lost friends over it because they thought it was okay to continually make jokes, it’s not something that should be hidden and done in a bathroom as if it was heroin it’s a real illness that already has a lot of stigma around it, I feel like all this movie does is reinforce that stigma - maybe I’m reading too much into it but it really rubbed me the wrong way
thats crazy, i've had friends and family with diabetes and it's just seen as a normal thing. i never knew people would get bullied over it
Is there really a stigma around it? And is it possible that the stigma is just in America for some reason (assuming you're American ofc). Because here in Czech republic, I don't think I remember a single time I've heard anyone say anything even slightly problematic about diabetes, or talk about it as if it's some sort of taboo or shameful secret or whatever. One classmate of mine who had type 1, once literally took his insulin shot in the middle of a class, in front of 40 people, and no one bat an eyelash (...Ok, one girl did, but that was because she was agressively terrified of needles). The teacher didn't even stop the lecture.
@@Eris_Norregard I'm American and I'm not aware of any stigma. I've got a diabetic coworker who openly takes her insulin shots around the rest of us. The only time she goes to the back room to do them is when someone is uncomfortable with needles/shots, but it's otherwise no big deal.
I am in a very blue part of the country though so maybe it depends on where you are, idk

I was wondering why the drug dealer’s word was all that the court needed to declare them guilty lol. Like, sure they got married very quickly but they still lived together and, like you said, very obviously cared about each other. Who’s to say the drug dealer isn’t lying?

Maybe what they went through was so traumatic that they think a woman, ANY woman, will help them with that. My cousin unfortunately married one (no kids btw) and i haven't heard good things. It always seems like a bad idea to me to get married so quickly. 😬
