    I will say as well, make sure you're getting an offset mount where the angle is actually centered around the bore, so when you roll over to it, your dot is actually level when it's vertically aligned with the barrel. You'd be surprised how many mounts are just stuck out at random angles from the pic rail.

    • @588holly
      @588holly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'd add; make sure the offset is the same height as the regular site as well.

    • @tsoliot5913
      @tsoliot5913 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It doesn't matter, the dot is always a fixed distance from the bore. It's the dot, not the device, that is rotated around the firing arc. As long as you zero. Gravity is always down.

      Agreed. Micro piggybacked on an Reptilia ROF 90 is what I run on my 416. Even though I mainly use the LA5 under nods, the ROF 90 makes passive aiming incredibly easy.

    • @JoseChung21

      Thanks for this - I believe the pro & con list should have included how they work under nods. The 12 o'clock is the way to go and using a standard height mount for LVPO will provide better cheek weld and more precision at distance if needed. Red dot and offset red dot is redundant but doesn't increase capability for the weight.

    I think an acog+t1 is an optimal setup. It's the lightest "lpvo" setup. The acog never runs out of batteries, the t1 has a 5 year battery life, its cost effective compared to some options, you have a secondary sighting system, the ability to shoot passively under nods, and a purpose built optic for near and far shooting. I think LPVOs need to stop chasing the "perfect 1x" idea and think more like a rugged fixed lightweight optic. Most people recognize the need for a secondary sight which is commonly the offset red dot

    The ELCAN was way ahead of its time since its a QD LPVO, with a backup red dot, and backup irons for the red dot. People always suggest I run flip up irons as well, but the eye relief is kinda short so I run it as far back as I can, and without front irons I can run my Dbal all the forward, the optic alone makes my 12.5" feel like a full size carbine.

    I piggyback my RDS on my LPVO personally because:
    1) Offset is not ambi. You’re stuck rotating to one side and SOL vice versa
    2) optic can get smoked out by sitting next to port door depending on what mounting option you use
    3) my mount is only 1.54” so the rds sits just a hair higher than a standard unity. So not bad at all actually

      Sincerely not trying to be difficult just looking at things from a macro view point. Via your numbering system:
      1) You are assuming that you are going to find yourself not only in a situation where you can’t use your primary optic. And then adding on top of that not only losing your optic but having to work offside. We really are imagining everything going wrong???? There are plenty of pictures of operators during GWAT using an offset.. They seemed to be OK with it :-)
      PS not to mention offset irons should be a no go then for everyone in reference to what you are saying :-)
      2) if you are concerned about hitting it in a door frame, etc. then you would also need to be concerned about your flashlight and your laser. Don’t you think that’s a little bit of a stretch. I know this is just a thought experiment from the video but I think sometimes we truly over analyze.
      I get what you are saying, though, Cheers

    If for no other reason other than a redundant system, its worth the cost and the weight. When comparing irons vs optics, irons don't even compare. When its come to shooting in the dark, shooting on the move and shooting from strange positions the red dot is far superior to irons. There are other advantages, but this is just one of them that makes it a no brainer.

  • @kasper_429
    @kasper_429 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I mean I don't care what you do, because everybody's different, but still. I just don't get the double red dot setup. Unless it's specifically for an EOTech (which technically isn't a red dot, but I digress) with an offset red dot, which is the only situation in which it makes sense, because the EOTech battery life is worse than most red dots.
    Also, if you have to have a backup red dot for your primary electronic sight (EOTech), why run the lower battery life optic as the primary in the first place? If you want the bigger optic window like the EOTech, get something like a Leupold LCO (~5 years battery life) or Vortex UH-1 Huey (~1,500 hours battery life).

    My favorite setup is a medium powered scope with an offset red dot. A medium powered scope with all of the features such as locking turrets, zero stop, and parallax setting is much better than an LPVO, even a 1-10 at the higher settings. And a red dot is better than the LPVO on 1x.

    • @stephenjerome7793
      @stephenjerome7793 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can agree to an extent with that, people often times look for too much capability from their gear and thats where you start to see degradation in performance.
      I found that when it comes to LPVOs, the best options are 1-4 power because you don’t get that distortion or lack of clarity on one end of the magnification. If you need more magnification than that then you should be getting a scope that is meant for that kind of application.

    But in practicality, I don’t think there is a single person who would prefer the offset red dot to just using an LPVO on 1x.
    So for me, I tried this setup and didn’t find the benefits to be that great. It’s not easy to use the offset dot outside of being in a perfect stance with it perfectly angled, so that to me already makes it a no go for any “serious” rifle.

    Seems like a worthwhile addition for someone running an Eotech on a riser. Eotechs are pretty legit, but their the short battery life, no shake awake, or no constant on I'd feel uncomfortable using one without a backup sight. On a riser you can't normally use the backup irons, so a side mounted backup just makes sense.
    Honestly if you have the money, red dots with long battery lives make plenty of sense for your role.

    Lpvo with piggyback red dot for the win. 1-8 magnification for id'ing and firing out to distance. Red dot for close engagements and night vision passive aiming. Running a small cheek riser i fabricated for my stock so i have a positive contact with it when i bring my rifle up. Works great for my objectives. Dual red dots seems useless unless zeroing for different grains of bullets i guess.

    if you're running a 1x red dot, use an offset 3x micro prism for those harder to reach shots at distance, think about this when you use a magnifier behind your 1x, that takes you off the gun, and in a fight seconds matter, in close quarters you're not aiming with a 3x or 4x scope in front are you, no, you're using your visible aiming laser, your torch 🔦, and if under nods, passively aiming with the infrared laser, now with and offset micro 3x prism, you can still use that in a close quarters setting as well as for midrange, it a 1x-3x with out ever having to get off target, the only time you should be off the gun in a fight is when taking cover and reloading

    I don’t see the problem with running the offset dot primarily for you close in work and the 1-8/10 for everything else. Especially since as you raise the optic height of the lpvo to make it better at 1x you start to make precision shots more difficult

    The thing i encounter is limited opportunity to train magnifiers.
    It is just hard for me regionally to take a class or find somewhere i can actually do good magnified rifle drills.
    Let's be frank, rifles have two uses, offensive and defensive. Range favors offensive maneuvers and product favors defensive.
    Most lpvo offerings need 300 yards before they stretch their legs. Most classes and facilities near me i can drill are 50 or less. But if it was the boogaloo I'd not be running up to threats to engage at the distance i drilled at.
    I'd love to developed better skills with any magnification but I'm just limited. Doesn't mean having magnification is bad or unwise.

    I don't even have irons on my rifles anymore unless that is the only sights on them. Base magnification for my variables are never less than 3x and my offset dot is always zeroed at 50 yards. I don't see why people run 1x variable scopes with an offset dot. I think the scope should be your magnifier and the dot is your 1x if that's what your needing.

    LPVO(1-6 is my preference) with an offset red dot. After running a few classes, the ability to quickly engage between short, medium, and long-range targets is unmatched. Although red dots and magnifiers work great too. I'm also interested in trying a 2-12, 2.5-10 type setup with a red dot. This could really stretch the capablilty of the AR platform.

      a more traditional scope over an lpvo seems like a better, more logical pairing with an offset reddot. This way, you'll get a much better long range picture compared to an lpvo and anything ubder 100meters will be doable with a reddot. I'm in fact thinking of pairing a fixed 10x scope with an offaet reddot site. 🤔

  • @JohnSmith-yx8kf
    @JohnSmith-yx8kf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I've been having the same mental dilema about top vs offset dots. I wanted to run a 1.7 or 1.9 height LPVO, but also want a dot for passive NV use and as a close range tool. Top mount dots aren't as good for daytime use imo because the 'almost-a-chin-weld' is real even on a 1.5 LPVO mount, but the offset mounts i've seen just dont seem to be designed with NV shooting in mind. The other thing that puts me off offsets, is that it'll be the first thing to smack into obstacles a lot of the time. Probably me just being paranoid about durability, but still makes me uncomfortable. Top mount is definitely winning in my head in my case.
    Totally agree about the guys using the dot 90% of the time as well. A lot of what drew people to LPVOs in the first place was the 1x capability, but if you're using the dot instead of that 1x setting, maybe don't be super set on just a 1-6/8/10, maybe a 2.5-10 is better, or an ACOG, or maybe you can prioritize other features of an LPVO over its 1x performance and a 'daylight bright' reticle, etc.
