Ofcourse Kalam was an exceptional figure and but I believe he just got advantage of his times than his counterpart due to several reasons. His Muslim identity as he was a different Muslim than any other muslim. He was a devotee of science as well as a religious man. He had a hindu Outlook ,Hindu personality and he respected hindues and hinduism. His failure to join airforce was also a reason and several events of his times like Babri, Dawood Ibrahim, Pakistan, Gujarat, Modi and bjp led to his development.
