  • In this course I am breaking down the process of sewing a swimsuit into five easy-to-follow steps.
    Step One: Choose and Cut Your Fabric
    Step Two: Sew Shoulders, Side, and Crotch Seams
    Step Three: Baste Main Suit and Lining Together
    Step Four: Apply Elastic
    Step Five: Fold Over and Topstitch Elastic
    In the video I am using my own girl's Poolside Swimsuit pattern (girl's sizes 2-12) and I am offering it for FREE for all who sign up for my newsletter. Please see this post to sign up and get your pattern too:
    www.threadsewingschool.com/bl...
    Even if you want to use a different pattern, this video will help you feel more confident and give you the expertise to get started.
    Thanks for watching!

    Got bathing suit tankini i love and i am looking for the silicone grip stuff you find in some clothing to keep it from riding up. I want to put it permanently on my suit, do you know what it is called? I find it sometimes at the back legs of underwear and in shapewear, but i want to buy it and put it on my tankini. Any suggestions or do you know the official name? I don't want to put elastic at the bottom, i feel like it would be unflattering. It keeps sliding up off the bottoms.

    • @chelisepatterson
      @chelisepatterson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, when I have made tankinis I generally don't put elastic on the bottom. There is a type of elastic though called gripper elastic: www.etsy.com/listing/456428906/gripper-elastic-5m?gpla=1&gao=1&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhpDsocaN3QIVBNtkCh19twmIEAQYBCABEgICwvD_BwE . If you attached this at the bottom of the tankini top without stretching the elastic AT ALL as you sew (just sew them both through evenly) then you wouldn't get any type of weird elastic stretch there and I believe it should give you the grip you are looking for! Good luck!

      Great question! (Sorry for the late response tho). I use a Janome machine: www.amazon.com/Janome-7330-Magnolia-Computerized-Stitches/dp/B001GTX2U4 . You could make a great swimsuit on any machine as long as you are using the right needle: a stretch needle or ballpoint, and using the right stitch: either a zig zag or a stretch stitch. Now if you are planning on sewing mostly swimwear I would highly recommend getting a serger. The one I have and love is this Juki: www.amazon.com/JUKI-MO654DE-Portable-Thread-Machine/dp/B001BG08DQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1535383561&sr=1-1&keywords=juki+serger . A serger is great for all garment sewing and especially for stretchy swimwear or knits. I use both my machines when sewing swimwear!

    Just completed my first swimsuit ever thanks to your pattern! I have a question, though. The topstitched elastic keeps turning out. Did I pull the elastic too much?? The suit fits her like a glove and I went by her current measurements to choose her pattern size. Should I have sized up?

    • @chelisepatterson
      @chelisepatterson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Barbie P I’m so glad you made your first suit! So, normally when the elastic turns out like that it is because your top stitches are too close to the edge. It’s totally happened to me before. If you are using 3/8 inch elastic, then you want to top stitch 3/8 inches away from the edge so you are stitching down that side of the elastic away from the edge. I don’t think it would be because you are pulling the elastic too much. If you are feeling like a perfectionist you can unpick the topstitching in the areas that the elastic is flipping out and restitch further from the edge. OR, if you are me I would not unpick anything and just restitch over the stitches again just further from the edge. That should keep it from flipping out! Hope that helps! 😘

    Thank you for your video. I am making gymnastic leotards for our daughters using body suits they can fit in as the patterns (since they are super slim and needed 'customized'). Before I sew the elastics unto the two "thigh holes", the fabrics are lies perfectly flat (not stretched at all) around their 2 leg holes. Should I also use the principle of 25% stretch for the elastic for the front and 75% stretch for the elastic for the bum? I measured the size of their thigh holes but feel very nervous of how 'small' or 'tight' I should apply the elastics around the thigh holes. Thank you.

    About how much does it cost to make one swimsuit?

      It depends on the swimwear fabric! You only need less than a yard for pretty much any size suit but the fabric can range from $6-$32 a yard to more I’m sure.

      You really need it to keep the suit tight to the body
