I just want to say: I'm sorry if my criticism of the "TikTok witch" cut a little too deep. I should have been more careful when discussing real beliefs. What I was trying to go for was more like criticising televangelists: the redressing and exaggeration of faith as a tool to sell stuff, which is what BHVR is doing with Mikaela. I let my distaste for that element of the story bleed over too much and that's not very fair or professional of me. My apologies.

As one of those insane students of esoteric knowledge you referenced, I ironically share a bit of distaste of what people who take things a bit more seriously call 'fashion witches.' In fact, I now have a very concise label for social media fashion witches, and I will use it with glee. Thank you very much for that. Eh, I feel like there’s a difference between beliefs and “if I put a chicken bone inside of a bundle of sticks and bleed on it and then put it in my neighbors yard she’ll get chlamydia”. I feel like, somehow, a HUGE element to Mikaela's 'witchiness' has been completely overlooked here. Despite being one of her perks. And it being both an obvious, as well as a subtle element of her mile long introductory lore. Mikaela is a laughable witch for all the reasons that were outlined, but she's also a clairvoyant. Apparently a precog as well. This is something to be contemplated, especially in light of the archive entries involving the girl who sees into other worlds, and her uncle who has a similar gift but channeled through his writing. I don't believe the similarities involved are accidental. By the rules that DbD seems to be cementing, you can't fully remove the 'horror writer' from the 'witch'. Or at least from the clairvoyant. Sometimes stories aren't fiction, they're inspired by fringe realities. This appears to be the case with Mikaela since her last story is the literal catalyst to her opening window into the Entity's realms. Mikaela's palmistry and herbal shenannigans are witchy hobbies that she chooses to engage in. Anyone can do it. Similarly you could apply this logic to her minor charm casting abilities on the bones in the fog. All that's needed is the knowledge. What truly makes her a witch is her inherent ability- the clairvoyance. It seems to be a newly awakened ability at this point but it's what sets her apart from the rest of the cast as being a witch in my opinion. I would also argue that she is unique, aside from maybe Elodie, in that- well I don't believe the Entity chose her. I think there's reasonable evidence throughout her story that she saw the Entity in its realms, and her abilities channeled a rift that bridged the gap. In this perspective, she isn't just telling her story on stage- she's opening the door to the fog. I think Mikaela accidentally chose herself to be cast into the trials.
I agree with just about everything you said except I think that she was chosen by the entity just not like the other characters. In her dreams she was getting glimpses into the entities' world and I don't think the entity wanted that. I think it saw her as a threat. When it realized it went to grab her but instead it took her friend by mistake, so the next night it went back and finished the job. It needed her gone as if she realized what she was seeing was real and if she became a decently powerful witch, maybe she could have done something against the entity. At least thats the feeling I got when I read her lore.
@@samualcolt2055 I can see that as a potentiality as well. Something about her seeing into those planes of existence pulling them closer just ... feels right. But with things like motive, mixed with something as Eldritch as the Entity, it could easily be a mix of the two- impossible to delineate the border between which did what.

As a person who knows “witches” there main love goal isn’t being the best mystic, it’s just a side thing. Mikaela being a writer is her main goal, it just happens that she is a witch.
@@PixelBush Why do we need to tell behavior that? You already showed how most of her lore is related to her being a storyteller. DBD's creative team KNOWS she's not just a witch, and they know she's not just a storyteller, they were the ones that wrote her after all. Being a witch is part of her aesthetic and that's completely OK. Her cosmetics focus on her witchy side, which is cool, and her lore focused on deeper parts of her character, like wanting to be a storyteller/writer. Oh and BTW, Mikaela being a witch might not have mattered as much in her world but it sure matters for her in the Entity's realms and it helps her fight against the entity with her clairvoyance, spells and magic.
The hags grandmother would work well since the hag introduced totems it would make more sense that her grandmother using the same magic would expand on them
basically, boon totems are to mikaela like knives are to the trickster. a small part of the lore that needed to be mentionned in order for the the perks/power to make sense.

As someone who actively writes fan fiction, has been writing fan fiction since she was 13, and is literally writing her thesis about the cringe coming of age story that resides in my decade of writing fan fiction, I resonate so much with Mikaela's cringe and I'm really rooting for her. Though I will say I think that the witch aesthetic does work in that it shows how the Entity blurs the line between fiction and reality and Mikaela's connection to the Entity that gives her inspiration for her stories is also what gives her her "magic." Cheryl is the only other survivor who pulls off something similar to this with Repressed Alliance, and it provides the first thread of what may eventually be the survivors tools of salvation. I also absolutely adore your talk about how all of the characters in DBD need to be "young" and "conventionally attractive" in order to sell and it really sucks how they're limiting themselves in this way. Jeff is one of the few survivors who knew their associated killer before being taken by the Entity and the fact that they didn't do a duel tome with the Legion and him like they've done for Yun-Jin and The Trickster, is one of the greatest missed opportunities that they should have taken. Even Nea's face rework made her a little softer and younger looking, which I think goes against the grungy goblin that she is as a character. She looks like Billie Eilish now.
I really hope Julian is the next killer and his perks are anti Boon. Would be neat to see the entity corrupt someone and how they would interact with the people they knew.
I want him as a Survivor lol. Talking about marketable, they really don't have a young, pretty boy as a survivor that isn't licensed. I guess Jake would be the closest, but he lives in trees.
The “Nea is the Entity” joke is a running one from the Samination parody videos that has been very decently developed across many episodes and transcends her being unattractive and has extended into actual gameplay.
it really is just based on "This character is ugly". there's no real other reason a random survivor who just happened to be considered widely as unattractive was labeled as "the entity". it's as simple as looking at Nea's character design in the animations as opposed to anyone else, including the killers, or taking the hint from the constant jokes about mistaking Quentin (who is considered ugly by most) for the killer.

I feel that they could use parallel universes in a very good way. We have The Hag that introduces the Hex Totems because that's what she used to survive the cannibals...but what if she had used Boon totems instead? they could bring a survivor Lisa that could bring 3 new Boon totems perks, just like The Hag I would really like that
Me: A Pagan who is also an author of Supernatural fiction and, from time to time, makes soaps and does other crafts while drinking coffee... If anything, this character has caused me to relate even more to this game. She's only a pain to those who main killer, but even the Boon totems can be destroyed by the killer so not sure what the problem is here. Real Pagans and witches don't do their practices 24/7. They have jobs, lives, children, businesses or just want to live life. The fact that her witchcraft doesn't define her is a good thing. A person should be defined by their contribution to the world as a whole. Meaning being a good person, working to support themselves or their families, dealing with normal life stuff as it comes. I'm sick of the stereotypical witch crap. That one thing doesn't define a person so stop expecting it to be their only defining factor. Honestly, I like that she's written this way because it means she was written by someone who knows exactly that. She's a normal person who dabbles into the occult sometimes. That's more real and relatable. Also, anyone who says they're a witch and is constantly doing "work" does not mean they are better or more important than those who simply dabble in it. If anything it makes them toxic and easily corruptible. It means they're already claimed by the negative energy rather than helping the positive energy along in it's most natural way.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree here. The idea of us doing witchcraft in some shape or form has existed since probably the beginning of time. As such, contemporary people who say "I'm a witch" (outside of the theatre performance art that is TikTok), we do it in a much more subtle way. They mention her doing protection spells, trying to read coffee beans, all of these things are stuff that modern witches do. Witchcraft in today's world is essentially a type of spirituality. It's a way for us to feel more connected to earth and just the natural world around ourselves. Different witches obviously do different things and have different niches (divination, walking barefoot in nature, vocalizing/chanting, etc.). I think she worked perfectly as a modern day witch.
I would like another survivor like Adam; a survivor who is just a simple teacher who one day had a moment of tragedy. He's not some big shot Architect (Felix) or TV Star (Jane) or even someone who WORKS WITH HER OWN FUCKING KILLER!! (Yun-Jin). Survivors like Adam, Jeff or even Dwight, a regular office worker who ended up screwed by the entity.
@@kilzfordays Adam is interesting for the "fish out of water" aspect since he isn't Japanese born but had to work his way up learning the customs and language through his own merit just to work his teaching job. I'm still kinda bummed they don't dive much into his experiences adapting to living there or give him cosmetics that reflect Japaneae fashion trends. I get obviously at a glance people are meant to look at him and not expect him to be a Japanese citizen but really the only way you'd even know about it is purely from reading his backstory.

Like, as an example, there could be a survivor who is a mother who got ripped away from her children, and besides a quick mention of "she does this to provide for her kids," they could completely write her entire character around her love for her family and how she would do anything for them. Magick workers are storytellers. The Magical principles of Thelema are based partly on the Will and the spoken and written word. The Entity has a tendency of amplifying characteristics of the survivors and killers it takes, so the witch theme fits.
But that is just it, she is well written and relatable enough to sell good, but below that surface she doesn't have much unique or actually creative. We have plenty relatable character that are also well written and are creative

Like in the video, her trying to be an aspiring writer and not just a fan fiction writer is unique and a nice character since we don't have one but since the "I'm a Wiccan xdddd quirky!!" was stacked on, it basically crumbles her entire character, it is like if Meg was an athlete but also a wizard.

For a while, I thought that the Hag's grandmother would have been a great fit as she'd be the natural contrast to the Hag with the far safer, but far less powerful form of magic that she tries to steer Lisa towards. Oh, well. Maybe in the next chapter!
Mikaela is such a missed opportunity. Wicca came from what was essentially a sex cult. BHVR could have established her as that basic white girl that was taken advantage of by a charismatic figure then given magic by the entity as a means of luring her into the realm. Bonus points if she came with her cult leader as a killer. As a y2k style wiccan who self confessed likes rituals to make myself feel better rather than actually believing they're magic, I love Mikaela's aesthetics but think there was such missed opportunity to make her tragic and accurate to 20th century Wicca. I do like your storyteller idea though. I just wish they'd split the wiccan aesthetic from the storyteller and given the latter to another character. Potentially someone else in the cult. We're overdue more lore involving Entity obsessed cults.
I feel like part of Mikaela's problem (besides the fact that her perks provide an even more dramatic power shift added with the devs obsessive nerfing disorder) is that her design as some sort of practitioner of witchcraft lacks any of the charm that witches and magic users normally have in media because it's stupidly blunt in itself which makes it seem artless but also that we already had an occult themed survivour in Élodie with her having actual connections to the paranormal that link to the Entity and the Black Veil having actually been stabbed by one of their members during an investigation and calling on the Entity to take her to its realm so she wouldn't die. For example if I was to write Mikaela's story I'd possibly make it so she was either 1: A psychic medium who possibly worked alongside a detective to uncover the rampent disappearances of some of the survivors and killers, this route would give her affinity to the occult more merit in that instead of being something she uses a hobby and interest for escapism, it is instead something she genuinely belives with all her heart as her exposure to spirits and possibly demons has made her not only interested in this factor but also cautious. 2: An ex Black Veil member or someone who's family members were a Black Veil cultist and seeing as how her father was dead this could tie in nicely with not only her interest in horror and occult practices because she in secret watched some of his rituals when she was younger maybe around 4 or 5 years old and as she grew up she's always been told to stay out of the basement, so when her father dies and she finds the connections to this dark force of paranormal evil and maybe even links to missing persons cases that were used in ritual sacrifices she gets swept away into the fog for possibly trying to tell the police on the night she was to perform. With this second one you could also have her father be a killer in the chapter as some sort of dark cultist clad in his bloody robes with an athame in hand as he seeks to shed blood for his dark god, the man that she had known as her loving father who she idolized and went to in times of need and support, standing before her in his true colours as a malicious Acolyte who's able to call forth the Entity's power like some twisted puppeteer. An an alternative I even made a fan made concept of what happens when a killer's link to the Entity weakens and they experience a memory that gives them hope and they end up turning into a survivor with no memory of their time as a bloodthirsty catlyst of darkness. This in my concept is what happened to Lisa Sherwood, having no memory of her time as a killer she now works alongside the survivors that she had cursed, brutalized and mauled working a type of redemption arc for herself while coming to grips with her "new reality" and wondering if seeking out her memories as the Hag is something that she's obligated to do or stay ignorant of the suffering she took part in all the while gaining an interest in other killers such as the Wraith for example since he'd recognize her once again a reminder that she's been on a dark path. This also works with the ideas of Boon totems since the totems were founded on the theme of curses and voodoo, something I personally doubt someone like Mikaeala is an expert or for that matter would lack the knowledge of calling on more hardcore based magic and somehow overriding curses as opposed to the killer that introduced Hexs to begin with.
I was always hoping for a witch surviver. But I pictured them as a harmless child witch who lived during the Salem Witch trials and thought her magic was a gift from God and her killer would have been a priest turn witch hunter who believe her magic is from the devil
i think mikaela is actually very well presented as a modern witch, because for the most part witchcraft isn't something that completely takes over someone's life, and her being an aspiring writer also fits well with her character. also, the video you showed of the person placing 'fake' crystals in water is how you test to see if they are real, as some of them react with water. OR the person was just cleansing them. also also she needed her dad to die to have some extra character development, duh
I know some real witches who perform spiritual cleansing 'spells' by running about the place, banging on pots and pans and yelling 'Get the Fk outta my house!' A real hard thing to define, 'spells'... lol
@@richt7525 The religion is pretty free form that way, while there are some set practices and ideas, most of it is about what feels best to you as a person and how you can become intune with the universe, the Lord and Lady, and so on.
I really like Mikaela, both in her design and lore. She being a storyteller is great, and the witch part is really interesting, I think that there are some things that can be better explored in a future tome, like her connection with the entity, and explain better what was happening to her before she was taken into the realm (her nightmares and stuff). And, at least for me, being a witch is what made the entity strugle to catch her, also the thing that made her have the nightmares, I feel like her power connected her to the entity idk. For me, that is the part that deserves more attention. I think she has a potential to have a really fun and interesting lore. I, personally, cannot see the "Tiktok witch" thing, for me it is about a person beliefs, for some people it can seem dumb or non-sense, but is still something that exists and people believe in. For me it is kinda disrespectfull to talk about someone's beliefs like a Tiktok trend, I know that there are people that are witches, or something like that, only for Tiktok videos, wich is very bad too, but I think that generalizing it is not the right thing. (I know that PixelBush didn't want to offend anyone and that he already comented about it, this is not about him, it's just my thoughts about the character in general.)
My favorite survivor so far. She looks like one of my friends, though not Brunette, and I am totally going to main this lady. (Spoiler: I forget to play her half the time.) But yeah no she's as much of a witch as my sibling who does the same thing, though more for fun. She's a dork and I love her. But even though all that, I'd DEFINITELY want a little ol' lady running around.
Alright, so I'm gonna quickly give the barest bones of this: NFTs are basically images that replace assets but are incredibly expensive. Known to cause global warming by research. In the Pinhead Update, something something BHVR and NFTs were connected. No idea if it's true. But yeah.
It gets worse when you have met these people in real life at all sides of this spectrum I live in rural Ireland so I've seen most of the witchy people and it's the most accurate they have ever written a character It's so accurate that it's surreal to read as someone who respects these people's opinions but doesn't believe it in the slightest. She is literally like a person I have met before. It's simultaneously one of the best and worst pieces of writing they have ever made and actually hits close to home
This is probably a very odd thing to say, but I have some irl experience with the Witch interest stuff. I think that people think that witchcraft is just so weird that it cant be ignored and goes overexplained in her lore. Opinions shift and people are either interested or repulsed by it, but it often becomes a topic of conversation. Another odd thing people get mistaken, its not an aesthetic, its a hobby. Practicing witchcraft doesnt change your fashion sense unless the practitioner chooses so. Edit: yeah, saying shes a tik tok witch is so fucking painful but its right. The person I know is BARELY a stereotype witch.
I’m personally fine with Mikaela being who she is, since her character basically is modern realism, but I do agree that her being a witch and medium writer should’ve been separated. Her being a medium storyteller would’ve been, at least for me, far more interesting. Rather than doing the stereotypical medium fortuneteller, or a hipster middle class witch white girl. But yeah, a medium storyteller is what captured my attention the most, and it goes well with the newest killer being an artist. Art, whether is handcrafted or written, a lot of times goes well with horror
While I do agree or see the reasoning behind a lot of the points you made in this video, there is one section of the video I disagree with. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but to me, it sounds like you're saying no one plays Jeff and The Twins because they are unattractive, and the only reason people play Nea is because she is free. While I do admit that it may play a part in it, I believe there are other reasons. Jeff, while he may be a good character story-wise, is very loud and tall, so killers can find him easier than other survivors, and his perks are mediocre at best. Add on to that he was part of the Darkness Among Us DLC, which isn't one of the more well-liked DLCs, it is possible that a lot of people just don't have him for that reason. As for The Twins, they had a bug-ridden launch that made a lot of people have a horrible first impression of them, which was not helped by the fact a lot of people used their power for camping (which is a valid strategy for DBD Matches, but it doesn't leave a good taste in people's mouths). As for Nea, I do agree that the whole Entity joke started due to her appearance, but I think the reason it is still around now is not because people find her unattractive, but rather that it's a main part of Samination's Parodies (which does make fun of her appearance, so view that as you will). However, I do see a lot of people play her in my games of DBD, whether or not because she's a free character or people actually like her, I can't say. Now I do agree that BHVR makes a lot of commonly attractive characters, it's what a lot of games do, sex sells after all. However, I don't think it's fair to say people do not play these characters solely because they are unattractive. If I have misunderstood your point, please let me know.
Hi, just want to remember to people that are not getting Mikaela because of the whole NFT shit that she is an original character so iridescent shards can be use. So if you have 9k, I advise you to get her that way beacuse you get the character that you want and don't support the nft bullshit. Just thought I say this because I see allot of people that want her but aren't getting her because of the whole fiasco.

That's what happened to me too. I had the Auric Cells in my account after buying Chatterer when Pinhead came out (long before the NFTs came to light) so I just spent them because BHVR already had my money.

Honestly, I'm cool with what Mikaela's story is, I was just expecting something different. I was expecting something like the Blight, who posed a sort of new threat to the entity. How she could use the killers' tools for the survivors gain and whatnot. I was expecting her to do more dangerous, real witchcraft. Like necromancy in order to communicate with her father or something. I still see a way in which the boon totems would fit her character, actually. If she's angry with the entity for taking Julien, it makes sense that she'd use some kind of knowledge to sabotage the entities tools. But, I think it's safe to say that Mikaela didn't dabble into any real secret knowledge.
I think they should've made all her perks boon perks just like they did with Hag. Then along with her bring a bunch of new perks that are not teachables, just to emphasize how powerful of a witch she was. It could brought a few more boons that wasn't just radius reliant and some perks that shook up the meta. Probably even bring in new killer perks too to show that her magic was so powerful that it enhanced even the darkness in the realm. It could've more the entire overall lore along like there was finally progress just like the Blight did. Idk I was craving more with this midchapter. We're all waiting for something to happen
I think her design is really cute and I like playing as her just because of that. I definitely agree her identity as a writer is way more interesting than the whole witch thing. I think you're spot on with the "tiktok witch" analysis that's exactly what I thought when I saw her.
I see Mikaela as a person with genuine supernatural powers who while living in 2020/2021 does the TikTok witch stuff since thats how she thinks her powers work.
I always thought of her as a bit of a tik-tok witch and i thought that angle worked great. I even sort of imagine in the realms of the entity her belief in those powers is the reason she can do them. like maybe there was never anything supernatural about her in the real world, but something about her belief in it and herself gave her a weird edge on the other side.

I fully support your point about pretty survivors being a cynical bait beneath human dignity. But nobody is playing Jeff because his grunts are louder than the killer's terror radius. And Spirit being conventionally attractive is an... interesting stance to take.
Good video, but I have a point of contention. I really think that many of the characters you mentioned are not girlbosses. Let this be clear I do think there is a character who is a legitimate girlboss in my understanding of the term. However, I think Jane, Yui, Zarina, and Elodie are not girlbosses. It is quite true that part of the girlboss trope is the overcoming of adversity to rise to be the boss of your company or workplace (the boss in girlboss), and out of all of the people I just mentioned only one has such a relationship with their line of work. Perhaps this interpretation is to specific and is artificially limiting the scope of the girlboss trope, but I think it is fair that you have to be the boss of someone to be a girlboss. I think especially Yui is not a girlboss, I would argue that her story is a rejection of becoming a girlboss and instead remaining a caring figure for those around her. A girlboss, while perhaps overcoming adversity, also will not hesitate to step on others to get ahead in their career and Yui's story explicitly condemns this. Jane, Zarina, and Elodie also seem to not fit this mold either from what we have been given. There is however one person who I think fits the girlboss mold perfectly (this is not a bad thing) and that is Yun-Jin. Yun-Jin is a textbook girlboss, she overcame adversity to get where she is and is the manager of a successful K-pop band/performer. However, she no doubt had to step on people to advance her career and cynically ignored the deaths of others to advance her career. To me, she is the only true girlboss type character in DBD and I think people are using it as a catchall for women characters who are successful.
As someone who also is an aspiring writer, I absolutely adore Mikaela’s love of being a storyteller, and I really would like to see more focus on her relationship with Julian. That being said, the Hag’s grandmother being a survivor is a BRILLIANT idea.
Dude one thing that would have been cool with lisas grandma as a survivor is that hag introduced hex totems in the game and boon totems would have been the same but in reverse for survivors and having it be lisas grandmother would be kinda cool since its like a reverse of hag
Personally, I really like the TikTok witch angle for Mikaela. She's definitely difficult to take serious, but I felt like that's somewhat intentional; the vibe I got from her story was that she basically naively followed the whole witchy influencer trend as many of the young generation do, but in doing so she inadvertently opened the door to REAL magic through the realm of the Entity. Essentially, Mikaela fucked around and found out. The thing I am actually most intrigued by in this story is the abduction of Julian- he was confirmed to be taken by the Entity, so where is he? Is he just going to be forgotten like the narrative of the Imperatti, Black Vale, and Pariahs? Or, given his direct significance to Mikaela, is he going to be built up over the coming months only to eventually make his debut as a playable character, ala the Alchemist eventually being revealed to be Talbot Grimes? EDIT: Also to comment on the last bit, I believe DBDLeaks has already confirmed we're getting an original chapter next month with a Survivor and Killer, so I wonder if we'll see the arrival of Julian then?
Of the three in that story, I'd prefer the uncle. He effectively shares his niece's gift to a different degree- he just channels it into his 'fiction', and he sees random things from random disconnected places. Not too different from what the Archivist is doing, tbh. I just enjoy the irony of his wanting to be comfy and safe from harm and then the Entity grabs him. Fuggin whoops. Would give the kids a better arc as well- trying to get their uncle back.
If bhvr wanted to add boon totems so bad but was worried an older female wouldn’t have sold well, they should have gone the license route. Cordelia Goode or misty day from American horror story would have been perfect witch survivors.
The whole "marketable" aspect of survivors is so accurate though. It especially rings true because you almost never see a lobby without a Feng or a Mikaela. I would absolutely love a grandmother survivor. I'd definitely play her from time to time especially because of the hilarity of a grandma running around with a flashlight. I'd also love another plus size male character. I do fall into the category of not caring for Jeff just because I don't like long hair and long beards (but that also includes Jake and Felix with long hair). Plus, his cosmetics aren't that great. On a different note, I am so ready for BHVR to be more creative with making survivors. It really is all about "I have a career. I like these things. This makes me sad. Oh no, fog!" It's soooooo stale. I've said this a lot lately, but I want like a Roman gladiator who fought in a coliseum. Could be either a killer or survivor, but as a survivor, it could be really interesting, or even both really. They could also play with futurism and have a survivor who is an astronaut on a space station orbiting Mars where a horrifying anomaly breaks loose. That character wouldn't even need space gear for all their cosmetics. Even, just generally, none of the survivors have children (I believe) and that could break up the story monotony in such an easy, simple way. I dunno... I'm spit-balling at this point.
As someone who does practice witchcraft, Mikaela is fine. Lots of us do kind of silly things like blessing coffee beans or doing divination on scraps after a meal. Witchcraft isn’t some big serious affair it’s no different than a Christian person praying over their dinner. She’s no where near as bad as a “tiktok witch” and is honestly a great depiction of modern day witches
That's fair and understandable. The bit that threw me off is how it somehow drew the attention of the Entity, if it's meant to be something offhand. Like a Christian praying over their dinner doesn't summon an elder god that kidnaps your friend and possesses your nightmares. Sorry if my criticisms didn't quite land properly.
Jane marked a new trend for survivor storys but had mixed execution, now Michaela breaks that trend but has poor cohesion. I think we are back at the start of some sort of loop...
she seems based on neo-pagan beliefs and while I did not study up on the MOST recent pagan faiths I do know enough to share some information in regards with Reid's witchyness: some real-life neo-pagans have the belief that people can "charge" things with intend, soap and body lotions are the most common. but candles, books, art, anything can be "charged" this way with "positive energy" the reverse also works, which I believe is how the entity got to her. She poured all her negativity in stories she at first consumed and then started to write, attracting the MOST negative being there is: The entity. and when she essentialy improvised the story of the entity in front of the audience (I might be misremembering this part, but the phrasing made me think that) she essentialy summoned it to her. This would also be how the boon totems work: "blessing" them with the intent to help and overcome the trials, the fact she has been shown magic is real probably also helps in the focus and belief neccecary to perform that kind of magic. the only perk that has me a little confused is the clairvoyance, as real life pagan witches (or the non-tiktok ones) dont really believe in that.
Mikaela is definitely more a modern, casual witch. I'll be honest though, I feel like they missed the opportunity to make her a more dedicated witch and practitioner of real magic. I've met witches before who make regular contact with the dead, demons, and deities; lay powerful curses on people they believe deserve to be taught a lesson; and are incredibly superstitious, allowing magic not to just be a hobby or religious practice, but a pillar of their whole life. Folk magic goes back centuries and there are so many practices of witchcraft they could have used for dbd's witch survivor. One of them being American hoodoo- a type of magic practiced by African slaves and derived from African and Catholic religious and spiritual practices, I understand how difficult that could be to use for a survivor in dbd with how painful a subject American slavery is, but I feel like they could have at least used this character as an opportunity to have an older survivor from the distant past like Plague. Folk magic, especially in the US, has such a rich history dating back so long and is so much more than just growing herbs for body butters and giving palm readings. It's a bit of a shame that they didn't explore it as much as they could have. Though I will say, I still do love Mikaela and have adopted her as my new main survivor lmao
I am living for the Jeff love. I hope he gets a tome soonish cause people just really forget him. He's a kindhearted character who got past his depression and such a handsome man! He even adopted a stray dog! Plus if you do anything cool as Jeff then people remember it longer cause it was as Jeff as opposed to Meg/Nea/Claud. #JusticeForJeff
I like how, you think it would be good to re-write hag's lore. It's good to know that, even if you hate her lore and....her character (a litlle) you still think she could have a complete re-write. Hag for me is not just...a strange looking wendigo, who's power is to scare everyone in the map, i think her concept is pretty interesting (Shame her lore doesn't present that.) As a hag main, i still think it would not be so dificult to re-write her, they literally trashed nurse's lore, so i think behaviour could change some things to a degree. I would actually love to see, and older female survivor, who have real parenting with one of the killers. It would be so interesting, to see what Lisa's grandmother did, after years of her grandaughter dissapearence. I hope one day, Hag at least get a new story, that puts humanity in her, and make us feel pity for her, not a story who literally makes her a husk
As a white cis man, I really want Lisa's grandmother as a Survivor. Have it be that she prepares herself to face the entity because she realises that has corrupted her granddaughter, and she doesn't offer herself to it. Oh no. Instead she makes herself appear weaker, lets it come to claim her, then forces it to take her on her terms. She comes into the Entitys realm with one goal, saving her granddaughter, and those the Entity has claimed. She comes for revenge on the Entity, and she is one of the few who can at least fight it. Old black woman with a touch of voodoo to her skillset and a will to make sacrifices for the outcome she wants. That is the survivor that speaks to me. That is someone who would be amazing to me. And the perfect time to make and release her, would be with a Tomb for the Hag.

That's very reasonable: I probably did go too hard. I probably should tempered my derision a bit: I still find Mikaela to be a laughable character, but I should have been more careful when bringing real people into the conversation.
I AM a pagan heathen, and I wasn't offended. I'd imagine most practitioners would also be a bit thick skinned. Persecution is part of the heritage and his commentary seemed more derisive of 'witchiness' as a fashion trend. Being that people who are guilty of that offend me, in much the same way as little white kids dressing as 'Indians' in the US offends people, or should. In a sense, Mikaela is a bit offensive by default because she's a heavy handed caricature of many people's faith. I think that's what he was mostly commenting on, personally. And it harm none, say what ye will.
She looks good and has an okay/good backstory but I truly wish behaviour makes a south asian or latino character and an older woman. I loved how you said something that I've been feeling for so long how non young or traditionally pretty women are sidelined ;-;

I think Mikaela would've been better as a writer, as well, and I think that's why I've found her to be so interesting. I too feel like being a writer, and my own DBD fanfiction on Reddit feels like something she might write in a journal if she had one in the Fog. Hell, I think my character and her would get along quite well, even better than I think he and Kate would. She should've been pushed as a writer instead of a witch, and I hope BHVR does better with the next Survivor and Killer coming soon.

Heck, his DLC was the first non-licensed chapter I ever bought. As for Mikaela, I do agree that there were a lot of wasted ideas. Personally I think she would've been better if they wrote her in as a Wiccan who happens to work at a coffee shop. Better yet, had a survivor from before the 20th century. Look, I can defend Ace, Ash, and Bill being men past their prime in the game. With Bill's tome we learned that he withstood the onslaught of a female MMA champ for a period of time to win a bet. Not to mention that he's no slouch when it comes to physical activity as he's always dodging debt collectors. Ash is always somewhat fit because he knows that he always has to fight the Evil Dead at some point. And what did you mean about Bill being old enough to be a Vietnam veteran when we all know that he IS A VIETNAM VETERAN!!! Not to mention he fought off anesthesia to defend himself and made it home cutting his way thought zombies with a couple of bone saws. You covered his lore before, you should know!!! Look, if they did an older female survivor she would have to have some kind of athletic history where she's still in enough shape to still vault over pallets and lift others off of hooks. That's the only reason why Lisa's/the Hag's grandmother wouldn't fit unless she was healthy enough to survive against killers. Speaking of female survivors, I'm starting to think you have a bias against non-POC female survivors original to the game. The thing I liked most about Mikaela is that she's the first ever ginger introduced to the game. Yeah, I like that she's a ginger. But as for her backstory, it seems to fall flat. They should've limited the amount of identities for her. Like I said earlier, they could've made her a Wiccan. They are both story tellers and mystics and their own sense. There was so much potential that was wasted with the poor girl.

I feel like, somehow, a HUGE element to Mikaela's 'witchiness' has been completely overlooked here. Despite being one of her perks. And it being both an obvious, as well as a subtle element of her mile long introductory lore. Mikaela is a laughable witch for all the reasons that were outlined, but she's also a clairvoyant. Apparently a precog as well. This is something to be contemplated, especially in light of the archive entries involving the girl who sees into other worlds, and her uncle who has a similar gift but channeled through his writing. I don't believe the similarities involved are accidental.
By the rules that DbD seems to be cementing, you can't fully remove the 'horror writer' from the 'witch'. Or at least from the clairvoyant. Sometimes stories aren't fiction, they're inspired by fringe realities. This appears to be the case with Mikaela since her last story is the literal catalyst to her opening window into the Entity's realms.
Mikaela's palmistry and herbal shenannigans are witchy hobbies that she chooses to engage in. Anyone can do it. Similarly you could apply this logic to her minor charm casting abilities on the bones in the fog. All that's needed is the knowledge. What truly makes her a witch is her inherent ability- the clairvoyance. It seems to be a newly awakened ability at this point but it's what sets her apart from the rest of the cast as being a witch in my opinion.
I would also argue that she is unique, aside from maybe Elodie, in that- well I don't believe the Entity chose her. I think there's reasonable evidence throughout her story that she saw the Entity in its realms, and her abilities channeled a rift that bridged the gap. In this perspective, she isn't just telling her story on stage- she's opening the door to the fog. I think Mikaela accidentally chose herself to be cast into the trials.
I agree with just about everything you said except I think that she was chosen by the entity just not like the other characters. In her dreams she was getting glimpses into the entities' world and I don't think the entity wanted that. I think it saw her as a threat. When it realized it went to grab her but instead it took her friend by mistake, so the next night it went back and finished the job. It needed her gone as if she realized what she was seeing was real and if she became a decently powerful witch, maybe she could have done something against the entity. At least thats the feeling I got when I read her lore.
@@samualcolt2055 I can see that as a potentiality as well. Something about her seeing into those planes of existence pulling them closer just ... feels right. But with things like motive, mixed with something as Eldritch as the Entity, it could easily be a mix of the two- impossible to delineate the border between which did what.

DBD's creative team KNOWS she's not just a witch, and they know she's not just a storyteller, they were the ones that wrote her after all. Being a witch is part of her aesthetic and that's completely OK. Her cosmetics focus on her witchy side, which is cool, and her lore focused on deeper parts of her character, like wanting to be a storyteller/writer.
Oh and BTW, Mikaela being a witch might not have mattered as much in her world but it sure matters for her in the Entity's realms and it helps her fight against the entity with her clairvoyance, spells and magic.
The hags grandmother would work well since the hag introduced totems it would make more sense that her grandmother using the same magic would expand on them

As someone who actively writes fan fiction, has been writing fan fiction since she was 13, and is literally writing her thesis about the cringe coming of age story that resides in my decade of writing fan fiction, I resonate so much with Mikaela's cringe and I'm really rooting for her.
Though I will say I think that the witch aesthetic does work in that it shows how the Entity blurs the line between fiction and reality and Mikaela's connection to the Entity that gives her inspiration for her stories is also what gives her her "magic." Cheryl is the only other survivor who pulls off something similar to this with Repressed Alliance, and it provides the first thread of what may eventually be the survivors tools of salvation.
I also absolutely adore your talk about how all of the characters in DBD need to be "young" and "conventionally attractive" in order to sell and it really sucks how they're limiting themselves in this way. Jeff is one of the few survivors who knew their associated killer before being taken by the Entity and the fact that they didn't do a duel tome with the Legion and him like they've done for Yun-Jin and The Trickster, is one of the greatest missed opportunities that they should have taken. Even Nea's face rework made her a little softer and younger looking, which I think goes against the grungy goblin that she is as a character. She looks like Billie Eilish now.

The “Nea is the Entity” joke is a running one from the Samination parody videos that has been very decently developed across many episodes and transcends her being unattractive and has extended into actual gameplay.

it really is just based on "This character is ugly". there's no real other reason a random survivor who just happened to be considered widely as unattractive was labeled as "the entity".
it's as simple as looking at Nea's character design in the animations as opposed to anyone else, including the killers, or taking the hint from the constant jokes about mistaking Quentin (who is considered ugly by most) for the killer.

If anything, this character has caused me to relate even more to this game. She's only a pain to those who main killer, but even the Boon totems can be destroyed by the killer so not sure what the problem is here.
Real Pagans and witches don't do their practices 24/7. They have jobs, lives, children, businesses or just want to live life. The fact that her witchcraft doesn't define her is a good thing. A person should be defined by their contribution to the world as a whole. Meaning being a good person, working to support themselves or their families, dealing with normal life stuff as it comes. I'm sick of the stereotypical witch crap. That one thing doesn't define a person so stop expecting it to be their only defining factor. Honestly, I like that she's written this way because it means she was written by someone who knows exactly that. She's a normal person who dabbles into the occult sometimes. That's more real and relatable. Also, anyone who says they're a witch and is constantly doing "work" does not mean they are better or more important than those who simply dabble in it. If anything it makes them toxic and easily corruptible. It means they're already claimed by the negative energy rather than helping the positive energy along in it's most natural way.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree here. The idea of us doing witchcraft in some shape or form has existed since probably the beginning of time. As such, contemporary people who say "I'm a witch" (outside of the theatre performance art that is TikTok), we do it in a much more subtle way. They mention her doing protection spells, trying to read coffee beans, all of these things are stuff that modern witches do.
Witchcraft in today's world is essentially a type of spirituality. It's a way for us to feel more connected to earth and just the natural world around ourselves. Different witches obviously do different things and have different niches (divination, walking barefoot in nature, vocalizing/chanting, etc.). I think she worked perfectly as a modern day witch.
I would like another survivor like Adam; a survivor who is just a simple teacher who one day had a moment of tragedy. He's not some big shot Architect (Felix) or TV Star (Jane) or even someone who WORKS WITH HER OWN FUCKING KILLER!! (Yun-Jin). Survivors like Adam, Jeff or even Dwight, a regular office worker who ended up screwed by the entity.
@@kilzfordays Adam is interesting for the "fish out of water" aspect since he isn't Japanese born but had to work his way up learning the customs and language through his own merit just to work his teaching job. I'm still kinda bummed they don't dive much into his experiences adapting to living there or give him cosmetics that reflect Japaneae fashion trends. I get obviously at a glance people are meant to look at him and not expect him to be a Japanese citizen but really the only way you'd even know about it is purely from reading his backstory.

Like, as an example, there could be a survivor who is a mother who got ripped away from her children, and besides a quick mention of "she does this to provide for her kids," they could completely write her entire character around her love for her family and how she would do anything for them. That's not anything we've seen before.

Magick workers are storytellers. The Magical principles of Thelema are based partly on the Will and the spoken and written word. The Entity has a tendency of amplifying characteristics of the survivors and killers it takes, so the witch theme fits.
Personally, I adore Mikaela and her lore, she's a well written and relatable character who might just push meg out of the main spot for me
But that is just it, she is well written and relatable enough to sell good, but below that surface she doesn't have much unique or actually creative. We have plenty relatable character that are also well written and are creative

Like in the video, her trying to be an aspiring writer and not just a fan fiction writer is unique and a nice character since we don't have one but since the "I'm a Wiccan xdddd quirky!!" was stacked on, it basically crumbles her entire character, it is like if Meg was an athlete but also a wizard.

For a while, I thought that the Hag's grandmother would have been a great fit as she'd be the natural contrast to the Hag with the far safer, but far less powerful form of magic that she tries to steer Lisa towards.

Mikaela is such a missed opportunity. Wicca came from what was essentially a sex cult. BHVR could have established her as that basic white girl that was taken advantage of by a charismatic figure then given magic by the entity as a means of luring her into the realm.
Bonus points if she came with her cult leader as a killer.
As a y2k style wiccan who self confessed likes rituals to make myself feel better rather than actually believing they're magic, I love Mikaela's aesthetics but think there was such missed opportunity to make her tragic and accurate to 20th century Wicca.
I do like your storyteller idea though. I just wish they'd split the wiccan aesthetic from the storyteller and given the latter to another character. Potentially someone else in the cult.
We're overdue more lore involving Entity obsessed cults.
I feel like part of Mikaela's problem (besides the fact that her perks provide an even more dramatic power shift added with the devs obsessive nerfing disorder) is that her design as some sort of practitioner of witchcraft lacks any of the charm that witches and magic users normally have in media because it's stupidly blunt in itself which makes it seem artless but also that we already had an occult themed survivour in Élodie with her having actual connections to the paranormal that link to the Entity and the Black Veil having actually been stabbed by one of their members during an investigation and calling on the Entity to take her to its realm so she wouldn't die.
For example if I was to write Mikaela's story I'd possibly make it so she was either
1: A psychic medium who possibly worked alongside a detective to uncover the rampent disappearances of some of the survivors and killers, this route would give her affinity to the occult more merit in that instead of being something she uses a hobby and interest for escapism, it is instead something she genuinely belives with all her heart as her exposure to spirits and possibly demons has made her not only interested in this factor but also cautious.
2: An ex Black Veil member or someone who's family members were a Black Veil cultist and seeing as how her father was dead this could tie in nicely with not only her interest in horror and occult practices because she in secret watched some of his rituals when she was younger maybe around 4 or 5 years old and as she grew up she's always been told to stay out of the basement, so when her father dies and she finds the connections to this dark force of paranormal evil and maybe even links to missing persons cases that were used in ritual sacrifices she gets swept away into the fog for possibly trying to tell the police on the night she was to perform.
With this second one you could also have her father be a killer in the chapter as some sort of dark cultist clad in his bloody robes with an athame in hand as he seeks to shed blood for his dark god, the man that she had known as her loving father who she idolized and went to in times of need and support, standing before her in his true colours as a malicious Acolyte who's able to call forth the Entity's power like some twisted puppeteer.
An an alternative I even made a fan made concept of what happens when a killer's link to the Entity weakens and they experience a memory that gives them hope and they end up turning into a survivor with no memory of their time as a bloodthirsty catlyst of darkness.
This in my concept is what happened to Lisa Sherwood, having no memory of her time as a killer she now works alongside the survivors that she had cursed, brutalized and mauled working a type of redemption arc for herself while coming to grips with her "new reality" and wondering if seeking out her memories as the Hag is something that she's obligated to do or stay ignorant of the suffering she took part in all the while gaining an interest in other killers such as the Wraith for example since he'd recognize her once again a reminder that she's been on a dark path.
This also works with the ideas of Boon totems since the totems were founded on the theme of curses and voodoo, something I personally doubt someone like Mikaeala is an expert or for that matter would lack the knowledge of calling on more hardcore based magic and somehow overriding curses as opposed to the killer that introduced Hexs to begin with.
I was always hoping for a witch surviver.
But I pictured them as a harmless child witch who lived during the Salem Witch trials and thought her magic was a gift from God and her killer would have been a priest turn witch hunter who believe her magic is from the devil
i think mikaela is actually very well presented as a modern witch, because for the most part witchcraft isn't something that completely takes over someone's life, and her being an aspiring writer also fits well with her character. also, the video you showed of the person placing 'fake' crystals in water is how you test to see if they are real, as some of them react with water. OR the person was just cleansing them. also also she needed her dad to die to have some extra character development, duh

I really like Mikaela, both in her design and lore. She being a storyteller is great, and the witch part is really interesting, I think that there are some things that can be better explored in a future tome, like her connection with the entity, and explain better what was happening to her before she was taken into the realm (her nightmares and stuff).
And, at least for me, being a witch is what made the entity strugle to catch her, also the thing that made her have the nightmares, I feel like her power connected her to the entity idk. For me, that is the part that deserves more attention. I think she has a potential to have a really fun and interesting lore.
I, personally, cannot see the "Tiktok witch" thing, for me it is about a person beliefs, for some people it can seem dumb or non-sense, but is still something that exists and people believe in. For me it is kinda disrespectfull to talk about someone's beliefs like a Tiktok trend, I know that there are people that are witches, or something like that, only for Tiktok videos, wich is very bad too, but I think that generalizing it is not the right thing. (I know that PixelBush didn't want to offend anyone and that he already comented about it, this is not about him, it's just my thoughts about the character in general.)

This is probably a very odd thing to say, but I have some irl experience with the Witch interest stuff. I think that people think that witchcraft is just so weird that it cant be ignored and goes overexplained in her lore. Opinions shift and people are either interested or repulsed by it, but it often becomes a topic of conversation. Another odd thing people get mistaken, its not an aesthetic, its a hobby. Practicing witchcraft doesnt change your fashion sense unless the practitioner chooses so.
Edit: yeah, saying shes a tik tok witch is so fucking painful but its right. The person I know is BARELY a stereotype witch.

I’m personally fine with Mikaela being who she is, since her character basically is modern realism, but I do agree that her being a witch and medium writer should’ve been separated. Her being a medium storyteller would’ve been, at least for me, far more interesting. Rather than doing the stereotypical medium fortuneteller, or a hipster middle class witch white girl. But yeah, a medium storyteller is what captured my attention the most, and it goes well with the newest killer being an artist. Art, whether is handcrafted or written, a lot of times goes well with horror

While I do agree or see the reasoning behind a lot of the points you made in this video, there is one section of the video I disagree with. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but to me, it sounds like you're saying no one plays Jeff and The Twins because they are unattractive, and the only reason people play Nea is because she is free. While I do admit that it may play a part in it, I believe there are other reasons. Jeff, while he may be a good character story-wise, is very loud and tall, so killers can find him easier than other survivors, and his perks are mediocre at best. Add on to that he was part of the Darkness Among Us DLC, which isn't one of the more well-liked DLCs, it is possible that a lot of people just don't have him for that reason. As for The Twins, they had a bug-ridden launch that made a lot of people have a horrible first impression of them, which was not helped by the fact a lot of people used their power for camping (which is a valid strategy for DBD Matches, but it doesn't leave a good taste in people's mouths). As for Nea, I do agree that the whole Entity joke started due to her appearance, but I think the reason it is still around now is not because people find her unattractive, but rather that it's a main part of Samination's Parodies (which does make fun of her appearance, so view that as you will). However, I do see a lot of people play her in my games of DBD, whether or not because she's a free character or people actually like her, I can't say. Now I do agree that BHVR makes a lot of commonly attractive characters, it's what a lot of games do, sex sells after all. However, I don't think it's fair to say people do not play these characters solely because they are unattractive. If I have misunderstood your point, please let me know.
Hi, just want to remember to people that are not getting Mikaela because of the whole NFT shit that she is an original character so iridescent shards can be use. So if you have 9k, I advise you to get her that way beacuse you get the character that you want and don't support the nft bullshit. That's what happened to me too. I had the Auric Cells in my account after buying Chatterer when Pinhead came out (long before the NFTs came to light) so I just spent them because BHVR already had my money.

Honestly, I'm cool with what Mikaela's story is, I was just expecting something different. I was expecting something like the Blight, who posed a sort of new threat to the entity. How she could use the killers' tools for the survivors gain and whatnot. I was expecting her to do more dangerous, real witchcraft. Like necromancy in order to communicate with her father or something. I still see a way in which the boon totems would fit her character, actually. If she's angry with the entity for taking Julien, it makes sense that she'd use some kind of knowledge to sabotage the entities tools. But, I think it's safe to say that Mikaela didn't dabble into any real secret knowledge.

I think they should've made all her perks boon perks just like they did with Hag. Then along with her bring a bunch of new perks that are not teachables, just to emphasize how powerful of a witch she was. It could brought a few more boons that wasn't just radius reliant and some perks that shook up the meta. Probably even bring in new killer perks too to show that her magic was so powerful that it enhanced even the darkness in the realm. It could've more the entire overall lore along like there was finally progress just like the Blight did. Idk I was craving more with this midchapter. We're all waiting for something to happen
I think her design is really cute and I like playing as her just because of that. I definitely agree her identity as a writer is way more interesting than the whole witch thing. I think you're spot on with the "tiktok witch" analysis that's exactly what I thought when I saw her.

I always thought of her as a bit of a tik-tok witch and i thought that angle worked great. I even sort of imagine in the realms of the entity her belief in those powers is the reason she can do them. like maybe there was never anything supernatural about her in the real world, but something about her belief in it and herself gave her a weird edge on the other side.

I fully support your point about pretty survivors being a cynical bait beneath human dignity. But nobody is playing Jeff because his grunts are louder than the killer's terror radius. And Spirit being conventionally attractive is an... interesting stance to take.
Good video, but I have a point of contention. I really think that many of the characters you mentioned are not girlbosses. Let this be clear I do think there is a character who is a legitimate girlboss in my understanding of the term. However, I think Jane, Yui, Zarina, and Elodie are not girlbosses. It is quite true that part of the girlboss trope is the overcoming of adversity to rise to be the boss of your company or workplace (the boss in girlboss), and out of all of the people I just mentioned only one has such a relationship with their line of work. Perhaps this interpretation is to specific and is artificially limiting the scope of the girlboss trope, but I think it is fair that you have to be the boss of someone to be a girlboss. I think especially Yui is not a girlboss, I would argue that her story is a rejection of becoming a girlboss and instead remaining a caring figure for those around her. A girlboss, while perhaps overcoming adversity, also will not hesitate to step on others to get ahead in their career and Yui's story explicitly condemns this. Jane, Zarina, and Elodie also seem to not fit this mold either from what we have been given. There is however one person who I think fits the girlboss mold perfectly (this is not a bad thing) and that is Yun-Jin. Yun-Jin is a textbook girlboss, she overcame adversity to get where she is and is the manager of a successful K-pop band/performer. However, she no doubt had to step on people to advance her career and cynically ignored the deaths of others to advance her career. To me, she is the only true girlboss type character in DBD and I think people are using it as a catchall for women characters who are successful.
As someone who also is an aspiring writer, I absolutely adore Mikaela’s love of being a storyteller, and I really would like to see more focus on her relationship with Julian. That being said, the Hag’s grandmother being a survivor is a BRILLIANT idea.
Dude one thing that would have been cool with lisas grandma as a survivor is that hag introduced hex totems in the game and boon totems would have been the same but in reverse for survivors and having it be lisas grandmother would be kinda cool since its like a reverse of hag

Personally, I really like the TikTok witch angle for Mikaela. She's definitely difficult to take serious, but I felt like that's somewhat intentional; the vibe I got from her story was that she basically naively followed the whole witchy influencer trend as many of the young generation do, but in doing so she inadvertently opened the door to REAL magic through the realm of the Entity.
Essentially, Mikaela fucked around and found out. The thing I am actually most intrigued by in this story is the abduction of Julian- he was confirmed to be taken by the Entity, so where is he? Is he just going to be forgotten like the narrative of the Imperatti, Black Vale, and Pariahs? Or, given his direct significance to Mikaela, is he going to be built up over the coming months only to eventually make his debut as a playable character, ala the Alchemist eventually being revealed to be Talbot Grimes?
EDIT: Also to comment on the last bit, I believe DBDLeaks has already confirmed we're getting an original chapter next month with a Survivor and Killer, so I wonder if we'll see the arrival of Julian then?
Of the three in that story, I'd prefer the uncle. He effectively shares his niece's gift to a different degree- he just channels it into his 'fiction', and he sees random things from random disconnected places. Not too different from what the Archivist is doing, tbh. I just enjoy the irony of his wanting to be comfy and safe from harm and then the Entity grabs him. Fuggin whoops. Would give the kids a better arc as well- trying to get their uncle back.

The whole "marketable" aspect of survivors is so accurate though. It especially rings true because you almost never see a lobby without a Feng or a Mikaela. I would absolutely love a grandmother survivor. I'd definitely play her from time to time especially because of the hilarity of a grandma running around with a flashlight. I'd also love another plus size male character. I do fall into the category of not caring for Jeff just because I don't like long hair and long beards (but that also includes Jake and Felix with long hair). Plus, his cosmetics aren't that great. On a different note, I am so ready for BHVR to be more creative with making survivors. It really is all about "I have a career. I like these things. This makes me sad. Oh no, fog!" It's soooooo stale. I've said this a lot lately, but I want like a Roman gladiator who fought in a coliseum. Could be either a killer or survivor, but as a survivor, it could be really interesting, or even both really. They could also play with futurism and have a survivor who is an astronaut on a space station orbiting Mars where a horrifying anomaly breaks loose. That character wouldn't even need space gear for all their cosmetics. Even, just generally, none of the survivors have children (I believe) and that could break up the story monotony in such an easy, simple way. I dunno... I'm spit-balling at this point.
As someone who does practice witchcraft, Mikaela is fine. Lots of us do kind of silly things like blessing coffee beans or doing divination on scraps after a meal. Witchcraft isn’t some big serious affair it’s no different than a Christian person praying over their dinner. She’s no where near as bad as a “tiktok witch” and is honestly a great depiction of modern day witches
That's fair and understandable. The bit that threw me off is how it somehow drew the attention of the Entity, if it's meant to be something offhand. Like a Christian praying over their dinner doesn't summon an elder god that kidnaps your friend and possesses your nightmares. Sorry if my criticisms didn't quite land properly.

she seems based on neo-pagan beliefs and while I did not study up on the MOST recent pagan faiths I do know enough to share some information in regards with Reid's witchyness:
some real-life neo-pagans have the belief that people can "charge" things with intend, soap and body lotions are the most common. but candles, books, art, anything can be "charged" this way with "positive energy"
the reverse also works, which I believe is how the entity got to her. She poured all her negativity in stories she at first consumed and then started to write, attracting the MOST negative being there is: The entity. and when she essentialy improvised the story of the entity in front of the audience (I might be misremembering this part, but the phrasing made me think that) she essentialy summoned it to her.
This would also be how the boon totems work: "blessing" them with the intent to help and overcome the trials, the fact she has been shown magic is real probably also helps in the focus and belief neccecary to perform that kind of magic.
the only perk that has me a little confused is the clairvoyance, as real life pagan witches (or the non-tiktok ones) dont really believe in that.
Mikaela is definitely more a modern, casual witch. I'll be honest though, I feel like they missed the opportunity to make her a more dedicated witch and practitioner of real magic. I've met witches before who make regular contact with the dead, demons, and deities; lay powerful curses on people they believe deserve to be taught a lesson; and are incredibly superstitious, allowing magic not to just be a hobby or religious practice, but a pillar of their whole life.
Folk magic goes back centuries and there are so many practices of witchcraft they could have used for dbd's witch survivor. One of them being American hoodoo- a type of magic practiced by African slaves and derived from African and Catholic religious and spiritual practices, I understand how difficult that could be to use for a survivor in dbd with how painful a subject American slavery is, but I feel like they could have at least used this character as an opportunity to have an older survivor from the distant past like Plague. Folk magic, especially in the US, has such a rich history dating back so long and is so much more than just growing herbs for body butters and giving palm readings. It's a bit of a shame that they didn't explore it as much as they could have.
Though I will say, I still do love Mikaela and have adopted her as my new main survivor lmao

I like how, you think it would be good to re-write hag's lore. It's good to know that, even if you hate her lore and....her character (a litlle) you still think she could have a complete re-write. I agree with you as well :D . Hag for me is not just...a strange looking wendigo, who's power is to scare everyone in the map, i think her concept is pretty interesting (Shame her lore doesn't present that.) As a hag main, i still think it would not be so dificult to re-write her, they literally trashed nurse's lore, so i think behaviour could change some things to a degree. I would actually love to see, and older female survivor, who have real parenting with one of the killers. It would be so interesting, to see what Lisa's grandmother did, after years of her grandaughter dissapearence. I hope one day, Hag at least get a new story, that puts humanity in her, and make us feel pity for her, not a story who literally makes her a husk

As a white cis man, I really want Lisa's grandmother as a Survivor. Have it be that she prepares herself to face the entity because she realises that has corrupted her granddaughter, and she doesn't offer herself to it. Oh no. Instead she makes herself appear weaker, lets it come to claim her, then forces it to take her on her terms. She comes into the Entitys realm with one goal, saving her granddaughter, and those the Entity has claimed. She comes for revenge on the Entity, and she is one of the few who can at least fight it. Old black woman with a touch of voodoo to her skillset and a will to make sacrifices for the outcome she wants. That is the survivor that speaks to me. That is someone who would be amazing to me. And the perfect time to make and release her, would be with a Tomb for the Hag.
I’m not a person who practices witchcraft in the slightest, but I felt like your comments on modern day witches were pretty disrespectful (i.e. calling them lunatics). It’s as much fair of a belief as Christianity, Atheism, Judaism or Hinduism. You’re comments just rubbed me the wrong way.

I probably should tempered my derision a bit: I still find Mikaela to be a laughable character, but I should have been more careful when bringing real people into the conversation.
I AM a pagan heathen, and I wasn't offended. I'd imagine most practitioners would also be a bit thick skinned. Persecution is part of the heritage and his commentary seemed more derisive of 'witchiness' as a fashion trend. Being that people who are guilty of that offend me, in much the same way as little white kids dressing as 'Indians' in the US offends people, or should. In a sense, Mikaela is a bit offensive by default because she's a heavy handed caricature of many people's faith. I think that's what he was mostly commenting on, personally. And it harm none, say what ye will.
She looks good and has an okay/good backstory but I truly wish behaviour makes a south asian or latino character and an older woman. I loved how you said something that I've been feeling for so long how non young or traditionally pretty women are sidelined ;-;

I think Mikaela would've been better as a writer, as well, and I think that's why I've found her to be so interesting. I too feel like being a writer, and my own DBD fanfiction on Reddit feels like something she might write in a journal if she had one in the Fog. Hell, I think my character and her would get along quite well, even better than I think he and Kate would. She should've been pushed as a writer instead of a witch, and I hope BHVR does better with the next Survivor and Killer coming soon.
If BHVR ever adds a writer to the game, I'd hope it would either be Jack Torrence or Alan Wake.

Heck, his DLC was the first non-licensed chapter I ever bought. As for Mikaela, I do agree that there were a lot of wasted ideas. Personally I think she would've been better if they wrote her in as a Wiccan who happens to work at a coffee shop. Better yet, had a survivor from before the 20th century. Look, I can defend Ace, Ash, and Bill being men past their prime in the game. With Bill's tome we learned that he withstood the onslaught of a female MMA champ for a period of time to win a bet. Not to mention that he's no slouch when it comes to physical activity as he's always dodging debt collectors. Ash is always somewhat fit because he knows that he always has to fight the Evil Dead at some point. And what did you mean about Bill being old enough to be a Vietnam veteran when we all know that he IS A VIETNAM VETERAN!!! Not to mention he fought off anesthesia to defend himself and made it home cutting his way thought zombies with a couple of bone saws. You covered his lore before, you should know!!!
Look, if they did an older female survivor she would have to have some kind of athletic history where she's still in enough shape to still vault over pallets and lift others off of hooks. That's the only reason why Lisa's/the Hag's grandmother wouldn't fit unless she was healthy enough to survive against killers. Speaking of female survivors, I'm starting to think you have a bias against non-POC female survivors original to the game. I'm not accusing you of having that bias, I'm just curious if you ever watched your own content and heard yourself?
The thing I liked most about Mikaela is that she's the first ever ginger introduced to the game. Yeah, I like that she's a ginger. But as for her backstory, it seems to fall flat. They should've limited the amount of identities for her. Like I said earlier, they could've made her a Wiccan. They are both story tellers and mystics and their own sense. There was so much potential that was wasted with the poor girl.
