Honestly the detail that billy called himself max Thompson JR because he wishes for a world where his father is so proud of him to give him his own name. Was always the detail that truly hit the story home for me

My headcanon is that the entity manifests itself to billy as a loving parent, and that’s why he serves it with loyalty
After reading this I like to think that if you're on Thompson house Billy is killing the survivors to keep his "Parent" safe from them.
@@arachnoirs thanks. I think the entity is good at finding a psychological angle tailored to manipulate each killer, the way it did with the plague by impersonating her god
I do believe in a stream once the devs said killers with glowing eyes don't see what's really going on. Like the hillbilly and the deathslinger. The entity has forced their vision into seeing their enemies, and I think Billy just sees his parents and the sheriff and others he hated.

I like to think that there's an alternate timeline where Billy *is* superman. A world where you'll read newspapers and see "Billy stops bank robbery",then you'll look up and see a kid playing with a Billy plushy,asking his mom if he can be the next Billy.

I clicked on your PFP to see what it was, and that Hillbilly shitpost is solid.
I also think a reason a lot of people fall in love with Billy is because he's the abused kid's power fantasy taken to the most extreme. I've had plenty of moments where I've fantasied about misfortune towards my abuser and when I first started playing and learned about Billy, I fell in love with his lore because he's a character I could see myself in *and* he got his revenge on the people that mistreated him. My personal reason for him being my favorite killer (despite not being able to play him) is *because* he was able to take back all his power from everyone.
I also completely agree with your point on his name! I refuse to call him Max, it just makes something uncomfortable deep inside me. I think it's beautiful that the community gave him his own name, something completely his without his abuser's influence.
I can’t do that, taking back the power in exchange for my humanity loses its appeal when I become less than what I was before, even if before I was only a victim, it’s a thin line to walk to between survivor and new abuser

I like the fact that Billy's lore its also a twisted version of the Myth of the Cave, all his life isolated from the Outside world with only a TV , showing that Illusion of the world , when he gets out, he gets to know the REAL world, then, its when we could say that Max, the boy that gained the insight of the real world, died along with his Ideal world, and The Hillbilly is born, with his non-tainted new knowledge.
i feel empathy for him and Caleb because i am someone with a disability and i was misunderstood a lot by people around me except for my family, but i can't master his chainsaw quite well otherwise he and Caleb would be my two mains. i still want to practice his skill and i hope i can stick to it because he deserves it.

I grew with very loving parents and understooding, but the feeling that you feel isolated when people can't understand what you pronounce is very real to me and relatable.
I grew with a lot of trouble of speaking properly, like I was unable to sound "r" correctly or just ommited it in tritongues. If I didn't have the parents that would bring to specialists to help with my issue (that now i'm able to properly comunicate but still have things to improove) , I would still feel as pariah, since my childhood I had lots of trouble to make friends because few people could actually understand what I Said.
Sadly, the Hillbilly story is incredibly real for children with special needs and parents not prepared to deal with it.
If we ever get a chapter with alt universe Survivor version of a Killer (and probably vice versa), Billy is my absolute top spot for the Survivor.
Theory: the lore about the Adams family is still correct. The Thompsons just killed them for their property.
Proof: uhhhhhhhhh bhvr

i think what I love most is how the story gives us *his* perspective. too often in horror, the "disabled and deformed" killer is portrayed as inhumane. their disability and deformity is something to be feared, their silence or difficulty talking is something to be distrustful of and never lets the disabled killer speak for themselves. their disability is a bad thing, and it makes them scary. that's how they are portrayed
but in max's lore, it's his thoughts and feelings. instead of fearing his mangled appearence and silence, we come to understand that max isn't an inhumane beast but a horrifically abused young man, a person with their own thoughts and feelings just like the rest of us, he was just unlucky enough to be born a thompson. instead of being stripped of his humanity, his story draws attention to it. he is the victim, he has thoughts and feelings even if he can't voice them, and none of this is his fault. he's not evil, he was shoved into the role of a killer and he had no choice in the matter
I also live that they portray him as intelligent. not simply a lumbering beast, but a person who understands he is the victim, who doesn't fall for chiefs taunting or lies, and who gets the best of chief
max is one of the few horror "villians" who is both disabled/deformed AND portrayed as a completely intelligence person with their own humanity
And again, my man Pixel Bush shows that he is one of the best Dead By Daylight youtubers in the scene. My God man your underrated. Dont stop being awesome you hidden legend
I honestly wonder how much this young boys life would have been if anyone, ANYONE had shown this young boy kindness, and shown him love...
I think something to note, and something i've not seen brought up a lot, is the buzzing. Whenever he gets at his angriest and devolves into brutality himself, there's always this neverending buzzing, that sounds like laughter, which i believe is the entity, pushing him past those points of no return, even at one point bashing his head against a wall to get it to stop, which makes it even sadder. I think it must have influenced his violence, because in the story you see how he doesn't want to hurt any animals, he doesn't want to be violent, he hates it, and then at the end he seems to enjoy it. Though that could have to do with hating killing innocent things to after killing the people who wronged him and how it more or less broke him after. I dunno, just a thought :)
I love Billy despite being so bad at him. I'll edit this with my thoughts later like always!! Love it as always PBE!!
EDIT: Post Video, thoughts. I think that Billy has some of the saddest but realest lore in the game despite being so exaggerated. Its a real representation of abuse that I think is quite fitting for that style of character. Its so good. Wonderful video as always Pixel.

I find him pretty easy and thus he's never been much of an interest to me, but I do love his lore
I know it's been a year but If you're still bad with Billy then I'd recommend his brown add on with reduces his collision hit box. It'll make traversal easier and won't make a noticable effect when hitting survivors
There is also the fact that the old barn was deadly due to black mould (on the map description), so it seems even more cruel for him to be bricked into the barn since it would imply Max’s parents wanted him dead but not by their hands (on a subconscious level)
My headcannon for the chainsaw inconsistency thing is that Billy invented the chainsaw, and maybe early prototypes were found, wich maybe lead to the "true" invention of the chainsaw. I mean, it is cannon that he built it himself.
Hillbilly's story is the only one that actually made my cry. I don't cry often. But it was so beautifully written and so heartbreaking, it's just fantastic.

I always wondered what hillbilly did to attract the entity after all of that bloodshed. You can see him chilling in the farmhouse mesmerised by the television seated next to the rotting corpses of his parents, so obviously he's been there a while. Just chilling.
Like was the entity waiting for the power company to turn off the power so that hillbilly could enjoy as much television as possible before taking him to the realm? Did hillbilly instead fall into an inconsolable pile of misery and the entity offered him another television if he murders survivors?
I NEED THE DEEPEST LORE.

Hill Billy’s greatest achievement is the reverse chainsaw into Quentin hiding in a corner
Love Hillbilly. As a survivor main I've never had an unfun match against a Billy. Whether I escaped or got completely rolled, it's always fun playing against a Billy. Looking back, even the rare times I got tunneled and camped by one, for whatever reason I've never been mad or bothered in the least lol. Hope Bhvr shows him some love. Would love to see more Billys again.
I genuinely love how they take the killers and give them story, even with ones not as clear cut and lovable as billies theres still an interesting life story in every killer.

I've always felt bad for Hillbilly, but I feel it even more now. I can't help but wonder if there could be a way to turn him towards the light given time. Probably not, given his perception, but still. As always, I love the lore, and I love these videos as a result!

My favorite thing about the hillbilly’s story is that he actually seems like a real human, instead of just being some generic villain who was born to do evil or something like that, he really could’ve been an innocent person who could’ve lived a normal life if it weren’t for his abusive parents, who molded him into the killer he’d become, while I think that it’s absolutely horrible that he came to this, you can kinda… Understand it? Not really, but you get the idea, of course someone who goes through all that suffering through their childhood is not gonna have the healthiest of minds
It nails the idea that anyone, no matter how good or innocent, could go down or be forced down the wrong path and turn into something horrible, and there’s loads of real life stories of once great people who sink down so low that they commit an atrocity, it all makes him feel more real

Ok after checking out SofaRek’s Segment i played some billy and somewhat enjoyed trying stuff out. There’s a very easy and boring way to play him and that all i’ve ever seen people use and all i’ve ever known use. Seems there’s more there but i’ll see, taken him from a 2/10 for in game enjoyment for me up to a 5 maybe :)

You know what? I think Billy would find a lot of himself in Bizzarro. Bizzarro is Superman's botched-up clone, a mockery of the Man of steel that only serves to live in the shadow of Superman and only wants to be as useful as him. Bizzarro isn't a villain that lashes out at civilians because he's a bad person, he's trying to "Save" them even though he's completely misunderstood by them, only wanting a world where the crowds are chanting his name with adoration and not disgust
And Supes doesn't treat him as a monster, he doesn't mock him, as if a creature so hideous could even dare to replicate him. He's actually treating him like... A disabled younger brother. And I think that Max Jr. Seeing their relationship, Superman, an Ideal he's been told he never could be, taking care of a creature that is all too similar to himself like "It's okay buddy you'll get it right next time"... Just imagine, his own Ideal, a symbol of a world he always wanted, telling a character that represents him that it's going to be okay... Heartwarming and heartbreaking
Another very well made video, the themes of isolation, ridged freedom, and revenge are all themes we can relate to/want.

ugh i love billy so much. in some lore videos, billy is pointed out as being one of the more evil killers, simply because he seems to take actual glee in hunting & killing the survivors, but the thing is: cruelty is quite literally the _only_ thing he knows. from start to finish, from birth to the entity’s realm, billy’s only interaction with other humans has ever involved cruelty. so how could he possibly know any other way to interact with people? he would literally need to be sat down & taught that violence and cruelty are generally considered fucked up things and not the norm lmao. that makes him one of the more tragic & sympathetic killers imo.
also: i would absolutely adore if you did a video on the wraith. he’s my favorite lad. his story is such a good look into what happens when genuinely good people are pushed to their absolute limits.
What makes the police chief an even bigger piece of sh*t was he knew what billy wanted.
He knew billy wanted to know his name and still thinks he’s a horrible monster.

They shouldn't have been surprised when Max turned on him, as you said Pixel, if you treat a dog like dirt, you can't be surprised when it bites back.
I think BHVR drew a lot inspiration from Genie, the feral child. I did a case study of Genie and I immediately drew parallels between them and hillbilly.
Some of dbd's characters just need a big hug.
Some of the characters aren't actually evil and are blinded by the Entity. The character models for Adiris, Caleb and some others have their eyes glazed over, showing that the Entity is showing them something else. We even see it visually with Rin. Her face goes from ghoulish and horrifying to a girl who looks terrified, then back to evil.

BHVR also went with a bold strategy of manifesting this in the game with his rework. Now even outside of the perspective of the lore, we feel bad for him.
Awesome video as usual, but I would like to talk about the actual lore of Coldwind Farm. As I don't believe the Adams are actually supposed to be the Thompson family. One thing to note is that the Thompson family does have connections to the police who have shown to be corrupt, and another thing to note is that Max at the end of his tome tells us there a secret rooms in the basement. Another thing is how both are described the Adams are presented as genuine hardworking farmers, but that's not the case for the Thompsons who are shown to rely heavily on corrupt police officers.
It's most likely the Thompsons killed the Adams, and had simply been protected by the Chief. Which makes it even sadder as those who would've shown Max love were likely murdered
Great video. I have a tip regarding your editing, you sometimes have extended periods of silence in-between your cuts which makes the video feel a bit unnatural. I would suggest trying to trim those down a bit.
I sometimes think about whether Max's story would have been different had he been born in the 21st century and had loving parents because there would still be bullying in school and that would either drive him to become a modern day version of hillbilly
Or attempt suicide both would be sad but it still would've been good if he could speak or at least try to and have a more clean look to his face and what was there
The space billy is the scariest part of this, I think.
But also, what the hell?! I’m pretty sure everyone who played him wants Billy to be happy. I just want to hug him. The whole chainsaw thing might complicate that though.

I find it funny that probably one of the main writers of A Man Named Boy just watch this and just go “uh, yeah, totally meant to invoke that, the sheriff totally represents the cruel word and not just a character we pulled out of a hat, totally”
All seriousness though, I have no quarrels with DBD’s art department, they are basics the only this game is still as good as it is
This story really hurts me because based off of real life logic I was born deformed while I suffered abuse it wasn't due to my deformities in fact I inherited them from my abuser I know what it's like to understand everyone yet not be understood my own siblings had to translate for me due to my speech impediment and I've been seen as less than human before because of it this story hits me on a personal level and shows me that if my life had been worse if I didn't have the few who actually care about me that I could have been just like Billy
Hillbilly is my favorite original killer. His chainsaw is so fun to use. I liked how tragic his backstory was. Even survivors I play against are super forgiving at the end of the games when I play him.

It makes you wonder if that if you show some of the killers just a bit of kindness and understanding, would they still be killers?
I honestly feel like if there was any killer that survivors could calm down to stop them from killing would be Hillbilly, and to an extent Leatherface. Hillbilly could spot a survivor, rev his chainsaw, and survivors could just give him a hug. He'd pause, and just stand there like "Aw, thats nice, thanks... but I do have a job to do."

Billy-billy (thats how i call him) was my favorite killer since i saw him in his reveal trailer,the way he uses his chainsaw is in my opinion quite original,and i wanted to master him,but i only started playing the game this year on my cellphone,i personally dont mind that much the overheat mechanic,but its annoying sometimes,when i discovered the tomes,i was hooked (XD) with all those stories,then i readed billys one and i was a bit sad after i finished,it left me thinking "what if....what if billy had a normal life? What if billy had parents who treated him like a human being instead of like a monster?",it left me thinking like no other story did,to this day,i wish billy had a better life

his lore is by far my favourite. mostly because it's a perfect horror story of how treating someone as a monster will in the end create a monster.
he really is a victim himself who in the end just snapped under the abuse.
but that is also why he is such a great killer since his reasoning behind killing is understandable.
the same goes for the Oni and the same should be for all the killers in my opinion.
Hillbilly is one of the most sympathetic killers because he really doesn't knpw any better. From the moment he entered the world he was just faced with cruelty and no attachment figures becaude his parents were just plain evil. He just wants to be himself and he has learned to also hate everyone on return as that is all he knows.
Hillbilly might have grown into a hardworking decent member of society if he had his parents to actually care for him. Sure he'd face animosity for his appearance but if his parents were nurturing he could have grown into someone nice

I suppose I shouldn't be so emotional about the history of a murderer, but I get on the verge to cry in the middle of the video
I always imagined the idea of looking at a killers backstory to see what crimes and sentences they could be given based on their circumstances interesting. Trapper killing people would be punished by life in prison or death because he is very much sane and knows right from wrong but Hillbilly was not raised with a proper education and doesn't understand right from wrong, what little he knows would have been from TV. I imagine if Hillbilly ever got put on trial he'd be admitted to a mental hospital instead of doing jail time due to his abuse/self defence as mitigating circumstances. He's really one of the killers you genuinely feel sorry for as he never had a fair shot at life and only knew a world of hatred.

I never really played Billy because I suck at the game and yeah ... but I LOVE Billy. He's cute with all his noises, and he looks cute, and I just wanted to hug him especially after I read his Tome Lore. I want to give him the love and affection that he deserves!
