Great Video. I Used This For Knowledge Of Wires. I Was Removing PDC From A Vehicle With PDC Factory Installed So Complete Reverse Of This Video And Just Wanted To Clarify A Few Things...1. In The Video @27:10 The Reason Why The Red/Yellow Cable (Doesn’t Reach) Is Because You’re Plugging It Into The WRONG location, Infact There Is Already A Green/White Wire That Can Be Seen In The Video Already Connected To Pin 21/42 That Provides A Fuse-able Power Source. It Actually Goes In A Black Junction Box (Just Like The One Behind The Glove Box Where You Plugged The White/Silver/Yellow Dots) That’s Actually Located Under The Passenger Seat Along The Door Seal it’s “Built In” To This Plastic Framing That Secures A Bunch Of Wires Behind It(You Will Need A 10mm And A Plastic/Nylon Pry Tools As There Is 2 Plastic 10mm Nuts And 3 Plastic Rivets/Fasteners That Secure It To The Bottom Door Frame 2. The Front Gong Speaker Wire (Black/Yellow) Doesn’t Run Like That It Runs Above The Blower Motor Which Would Have Required Removing The Top Portion Of The Dashboard To Run It How BMW Did. 3 The Front PDC Sensors Runs Along The Blower Motor Also Starting....From The Trunk , Behind The Glovebox, Through The Upper Dashboard, Leaving The Firewall On The Driver Side Of The Vehicle And So On. But Like I Said Great Video I Watched This Entirely And Used Sections Of The Video For Help With My ‘Deretrofit’
Hey, thank you so much for this information! It will come in handy if I ever do a retrofit again. The BMW retrofit documentation stated to put the red/yellow behind the glovebox.. so maybe it's a matter of pre-post facelift cars? Who knows. Either way, a working setup is all we were after here. I know BMW buries their wires very deeply in the car, so sometimes it's easier and just as effective to use different routing methods.
E39Source, LLC I Have 2 540i’s One Pre Facelift And One Facelift The Difference Between The Two In MY Case is that PDC In Pre Facelift Doesn’t Have Front Sensors And Doesn’t Have The 2 Wires That Go To The SZM or Center Switching Center And The Black/Yellow Front Gong Speaker On The Black Power Harness Is Missing Those 3 Wires Are Non-Existing And Can Only Be Activated By Going In Reverse And On The Actual PDC Module It’s Missing The Blue Connector(Front Sensors) But Looks Exactly The Same Also I Meant To Add Where That Red/Yellow Wire Ends In The Video Is Exactly Above Where You Would Connect That Red/Yellow WireUnder The Carpet You Will See In That Junction Box A “Set” With A Bunch Of Red/Yellow Wires In Various Sizes That’s Where That Goes. All E39’s Are Prewired At The Glove Box For Every Feature The E39 Chassis Offers. When Retrofitting The Junction Behind The Glove Box Covers Features Like Radio/Heater,Headlights, While The Junction Under The Carpet Covers Features Like PDC, Heated Seats. Being That You Didn’t Care To Run The Wires Exactly This Job Could Have Been Done Without Removing The Glove Box But Rather Removing The Seats And That Trim (Pick Your Poison) But Your Are Right Functional PDC Is Really The Ultimate Goal. If You Ever Do A Write Up On This Please Give The Channel A Shout Out. Also I Have Done The Same With Navigation And On Your Website You Don’t Cover Retrofitting Stock Radio To Navigation And Navigation To Stock Radio I Can Give You Pretty Much ALL The Information You Would Need To Cover This Write Up As I Have Done Both Jobs Start To Finish And Can Tell You In Great Detail Every There Is To Know About The Retrofit

For the red/yellow wire on PDC... does it matter which slot under the passenger's seat it would plug into? Or is that just a huge block that sends the same signal to all of those wires? I know that plastic trim and the block you're speaking of very well.
E39Source, LLC Some Of Those Are Grounds There Is Only One Block That Will Have Red/Yellow Wires To It. That Is How I Found It Every Other Block Will Have Wires With There Respective Wire Colors Connected To Them It Will Be The Only One With Red/Yellow Wires .To Get Technical The Block With The Red/Yellow Wires Will Be Closest To The Passenger Seats If That’s Understandable.
Jose Gonzalez my suggestion would be to get a new module and instead of using NCS Expert Try “Akai PK90...The Other BMW App That Uses Different OBDII Cable (BMW Scanner 1.4.0) ” I cant remember the program name been a while since I’ve worked on this but when I was working with PDC , NCS Expert Was Never A Program I had used I program PDC Using BMW Scanner And it’s also way easier . I will update this comment let me do a bit of research first get the terminology fresh on my mind to better help
Great work but to me its too much of a hassle! Just put a rear view camera with a module that will send the image directly to your stock wide screen nav/radio!

Great video very informative. I currently am tracing out a PDC problem on my series 5 MSport touring. It has the same kit as yours, however it is not an M5. Btw, yours looks great. I think it's what was sold in the UK as the Champayne edition, very rare. Thanks for posting.
Here this is just a standard 540i sport package in Sterling Gray Metallic, I have not heard of a Champagne edition actually! Good luck with your PDC issue.

Nice job. I’ve been wanting to do this project and had all the pieces figured out. I’ve held off bc I didn’t want to replace my perfect rear bumper and was scared of messing it up by drilling it. Maybe I’ll revisit this retrofit. Thanks man!

@@TheHeretic435 No, my E39 never had a storage compartment underneath the "armrest" because it's a U.S. spec model. Also, since my vehicle is a 2003 model it already came from the factory pre-wired for hands free telephone connectivity. All I had to do is to retro-fit the ULF module (or you can use a Telematics Control Module depending on your needs), BT Antenna, BT snap-in adapter, & Microphone - GSM. Depending on the year that your E39 is built you may need adapter cables for all of the necessary parts to be installed correctly.

Seems like the main retrofit harness is NLA (61120027006) - anywhere I can source them? Or alternative vehicles to pull a harness from?
I have recently heard this, definitely a bummer. I plan to reproduce this harness, but our shop is absolutely slammed with work right now and this is a lower priority. On E39s that came with PDC from factory, these wires are built into the primary vehicle harness, so extracting them would be quite time consuming- but possible. Keep an eye on E39Source's online store for when I make the reproduction available.
Where are the other wires coming to the gong? There is only 1 wire in the pdc power harness, right? And do I really need the PDC switch? Can I just connect the 2 cables permanently?
The power harness has several wires (bus communication signals, gong speakers, etc). You do need the switch, absolutely.
Just wondering why didn't you cut out holes in the bumper reinforcement instead of ordering a new one?
It is easy and cheap enough to source a factory bumper reinforcement with PDC cut outs.

great video. Is there some type fault on E39 PDC's? my pdc isnt working, when i press the button it makes sound but if something is close to radar it doesnt make any sound.
That long beep it makes when you press the button is the system's way of indicating that there is a fault, and the system will be disabled due to the fault. My advice is, turn it on, and then listen very closely at each of the 8 sensors in a quiet environment. You should hear a faint clicking from each sensor that is working. If you find a totally silent sensor or multiple sensors, those have failed and are preventing operation of the working sensors. You will need to replace the dead ones to restore operation.

Any difference between pl/prefl models in this installation?
2001+ E39s received front and rear PDC while 2000 and earlier models just got rear sensors. That would be the biggest difference; but as you can see you can easily retrofit the front sensors as well as the rears. There shouldn't be any other major differences between pre/post facelift.
Hi I saw the video, I've been trying to do this for 3 years. Now I have a rear M bumper with parking sensors, I have a cable and everything else. The problem is that my center console does not have a pdc button and if I buy another one that has it again, I will not have this connector that you show. I don't have that connector 23:29, is there a possibility for the cables to be connected in some other way.
Every E39 has that connector for that panel (SZM panel). The SZM panel has a million different configurations (heated seats, Sport for M5, DSC, sunshades, PDC, etc etc) and can be pinned to accommodate anything. If your connector is missing, it has been cut off by a previous owner.

How do you run the cables differently for a RHD? Looking to do this project.
I am not familiar with right hand drive cars, so I don't know if BMW inverted it, or if it stayed the same. It wouldn't matter from a functionality standpoint.
@@E39Source I imagine because the drivers side and passenger side are swapped, that they'd be run oppositely, so front harness would go past drivers side, and main power harness would run passenger side. Thanks for the response though!
Where'd you get rear sensors from?
I think he was able to find them from either E39 dismantlers, or on Ebay.
My factory PDC just goes straight to 1 long beep! when I put it in reverse, as though it were always close to something.
I suspect a resprayed bumper is covering the sensors. Face-lifted car, no black strip, so sensors were silver in the first place. Anyone else had this? How does the factory paint them if a layer of paint confuses the sensor? special paint, a VERY thin coat?
The long beep means there is an error, and the system is disabling itself. Have somebody shift the car into reverse while you take an ear to each sensor, VERY close to each sensor in a quiet environment. As they try to activate, you should hear a clicking sound at each sensor. If you have a totally quiet sensor, that means it's dead. Replace any dead sensors, and Ib et the system resumes working.
