  • Presented for Historical Purposes Only - A quick clip of Channel 5 in NYC (formerly WNEW-TV) from the first day they changed call letters and signed on as WNYW-TV. As you can see, their older production that was still featuring the OLD call letters would still be used for a while. Pardon the bad reception, I was actually using good old rabbit ears at the time!

Just hours earlier, channel 5 did its last sign off Milkman's Matinee promo, as WNEW 1130 and WNYW 5 were no longer sister stations

While, to tech crew, the prior call letters of WNEW-TV stood for "Where Nothing Ever Works."

Fox grew out of the ashes of the old DuMont tv network from the 1950s.

The DuMont Network folded in 1956. How did Fox have any connection with DuMont?

The remaining DuMont owned stations became Metromedia. Fox’s first acquisition were the Metromedia stations.

Also - it was exactly 27 years and 6 months to the day after what until then was WABD changed calls to WNEW-TV on Sept. 7, 1958.

I missed those days of TV signoffs and afternoon and Saturday morning cartoons...

Before that insert (in Gill Sans Medium) was put on with the new calls and owner, it said 'WNEW-TV' on the top, and 'MMI 5 NYC' at the bottom, of this NTSC version of the Philips PM5544 pattern.

Although NY's Channel 5 changed their call letters to the current WNYW but I don't think that they were a FOX station yet, still an Independent. But that wouldn't happen until October of 1986 when the FOX network was launched

This effectively marked the start of the Fox Television Stations division before (as you say) the network started, so the Fox logo isn't really in error, though at this point it would merely have been a replacement for the Metromedia corporate branding (which wasn't exactly unusual, as the likes of Gannett, Taft etc, or indeed Metromedia did themselves, did the same to unify their stations) and still operating as an independent until October.

Sorry to sound dumb but I thought Fox officially started in March/April 1987 with the Sunday Evening lineup anchored by “21 Jump Street” and “Married With Children” starring previously unknown Actors such as Ed O’Neil, Katy Segal, Johnny Deep and Holly Robinson.

@@americangiant1003 Both dates are sort-of correct; I'd suggest yours more so. April '87 was the official opening of the Fox network, correct, with the first prime-time programming. The Joan Rivers late-night show that started in October '86 - which ran in competition with news shows on the big networks at 11pm - was the soft launch of networked programming, a "beta" of what was to come, so some see that as the start.

They needed a young onscreen personality to tell everyone about the new call sign. This kid did a good job of it.

@henryhanson3750 I do now, but I had no idea then! I just wanted to document the call letters change, I was fascinated with things like that. I just wish I'd had better reception and had just let the tape run but I was more focused on the new branding.
